Does 'rural' equal mud tracks for A roads now?

hmc · 13/06/2012 10:52

YANBU - rather pointless fashion of demonising 4x4s IMHO

LittleTyga · 13/06/2012 10:53

I live in London so need a small car to squeeze in to parking spaces so "I love my MINI!!"

4x4's are OK if you live in the country I suppose.

revolting things

[unless of course you need them for the actual reason they were invented, or you have disabled persons to transport.]

bigjoeent · 13/06/2012 10:59

I love other people telling me when it is reasonable for me to have a particular car.

Now hating BMW series 3 drivers, that is a different thing. That is based on experience. Wink

abitcoldupnorth · 13/06/2012 11:01

Not all 4x4s are higher off the ground - ours is an estate, so normal shape and size. It's only really useful for the weeks when snow's on the ground and then it's the only way we can get in and out of our track.

Actually if you want to be greener up here, it would probably be more effective to add another layer of insulation to the house and give up dairy and/or meat (methane, y'know) than necessarily giving up your 4x4.

klaxon · 13/06/2012 11:03

Rindercella - I can assure you, you don't know me.

Mindyourownbusiness · 13/06/2012 11:08

I love mine because l feel so much safer being that bit higher up off the ground. I just feel so vulnerable in a 'normal' car now. I dont care what anyone says l think in most accidents you would have a better chance than being in a arse scraper car sat only maybe a foot above the ground.
Having said that l do not have an 'I'm alright Jack' attitude to driving as l would absolutely hate to be involved in or cause an accident whether l would be better off or not.
I bought mine when l lived in the country too although l dont now, but having said that - I dont drive to the local shops etc. l walk or cycle wherever possible. When l lived in the country it was a must really as we lived about three miles from the nearest shops etc and it was all along narrow country lanes with lots of blind bends and had so many near misses in my little Corsa I decided to buy my 'Suzi' Grand Vitara so l could see and be seen.

So there ! Grin

Rindercella · 13/06/2012 11:10

Klaxon, I can assure you I do Grin

How many loos do you have? Is it 8 or 9

helloclitty · 13/06/2012 11:14

"I would like tho suggest that a teen being almost mowed down trying to cross between two parked 4x4s has a lot more to do with the driver of the almost mowing car not driving at a safe speed in a built up area than the presence of 4x4s.
I would also like to suggest that the teen should not have been crossing between parked vehicles at all but should have gone to the nearest proper crossing. "
Mathanxiety

There was no proper crossing, it was a long road with cars parked either side for quite a distance. There were bumper to bumper 4x4's and it was impossible for the teen to see over the cars because they are so big. The only way is to peep around the boot thus nearly taking her head off!

Pendeen · 13/06/2012 11:15

Very sorry to hear about the near accident in your Audi but did you have winter tyres fitted?

Cockwomble · 13/06/2012 11:16

I think mini 4x4s are bloody ugly. It's like they took the mini, and stuck a helium pump in it's exhaust and blew it up. It looks like a cartoon.

"No car should be manouvering around anything on tight spots in the road. Wait until you have room and a clear view before passing."

Mathanxiety, you clearly don't lve in a busy city or you wouldn't write that. What happens when two cars are on a road with only width for one due to parked cars either side the whole way down the road? You HAVE to pull into a tight space where possible or reverse for miles down the road don't you?

helloclitty · 13/06/2012 11:22

"When there is a 4x4 parked either side of you it is literally a case of 'blind' reversing into a busy High Street."

This is the main point.

theodorakis · 13/06/2012 11:30

only blind to non 4x4 drivers...

Mindyourownbusiness · 13/06/2012 11:35

I live on a busy road and we have the painted white H line across our drive. When I try and pull out of my drive (turning right so onto oncoming traffic) there is often a works van or delivery van from the shops next door parked right up to the line or a massive Hummer thing (whatever they are called) which dwarves my Grand Vitara. I often have to actually get out to check it's clear then jump back in quick to pull out when it is (but still very carefully obviously).

...and I'm the 4x4 driver who's supposed to be ignorant Hmm yet l park in my drive when l could more easily park outside my house next to my white line myself and obscure other peoples view and take up a valid parking space whilst leaving my drive and garage empty.

Sorry and all that but this 'selfish 4x4 driver's' hat just isnt fitting me right.

helloclitty · 13/06/2012 11:51

Works vans and delivery vans carry cargo and are necessary.

helloclitty · 13/06/2012 11:52

Mindyourown

I presume you park on the road and car parks as well as your drive. When you do you are likely to be causing any non 4x4's trouble viewing. I think that is why people think 4x4 drivers are selfish.

bigjoeent · 13/06/2012 12:02

Wow, I'm selfish for parking where I legally can. ?????

If you're reversing out onto a high street, its because you are reversing out that your visibility is restricted, reverse in if it bothers you that much. I park in a similar fashion on a high street the majority drive straight in as its the quickest way of getting in the spot rather than holding traffic up. Don't blame 4x4 drivers when you could do something about it yourself.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 13/06/2012 12:05

I see your point everlong & theo

Its clearly one of those issues..

klaxon · 13/06/2012 12:07

Eight at the current count Rindercella and I know who you think I am. And you're wrong. You've never actually met me.
