to have suggested to this mother she requested a side room for her to sit with her son at ante-natal clinic?

Because her son had chicken pox? I was very polite and said I was sorry but didn't really want to be exposed to chicken pox while pregnant and because it can be dangerous for pregnant women it may be a good idea to try to ask for a side room while waiting. Her son was 5 or 6 and covered in spots. We were at a very crowded hospital ante-natal clinic.

She completely lost her temper with me and I should be the one to ask for a side room if I was going to discriminate and her son had every right to be there. Thankfully a midwife realised what was going on and took them off somewhere but now I'm wondering if I was over stepping the mark and should just have moved away.

I think now I'd have been better to mention it to a member of staff and keep my gob shut

YANBU

Some people are idiots.

I work on a hospital ward, you wouldn't believe the relatives that come in with diarrhoea & sickness to visit.
They are told to go home immediately!

Not surprisingly, we end up with an outbreak. The patients and staff end up dropping like flies.

I find that these days this is the way a good many people react when you ask even the most sensible, polite question.

She was wrong and she knew it, hence she gobbed off. You were in the right, but if I were you I'd have chickened out and talked to the receptionist due to the anticipated massive over reaction, aggression and claims of discrimination that was inevitably to follow.

My son still had lots of spots after Chicken Pox recently, even though he was long past the infectious stage and got lots of looks from people when out - but I'd been inside with him for 2 weeks and I couldn't stop my daily life forever.

Maybe the child was non-infectious?

Lorimar · 12/06/2012 08:05

And if you'd had it as a child, it's unlikely you'd get it again.

gobbledegook1 · 12/06/2012 08:25

YANBU. However if you yourself have had it I wouldn't worry too much as it is already in your system and will give your baby some protection.

In those who have had chickenpox more than once it is highly unlikely to be a reinfection but rather a reactivation. Chickenpox is a strain of the herpes virus and like the herpes virus once you have been infected it remains dormant in your system for life preventing reinfection however dormant virus's can reactivate especially in times when your immune system may be suppressed by illness, medications or stress.

no yanbu, seriously why did his mother take him out if he had chickenpox, and yes she had to see the midwife but ihave had similar with poorly contagious children and i needed to see a midwife and i called and explained and they were very understanding and came and did a home visit, plus it meant they could send a midwife who had had the chickenpox and so wasnt at risk of catching it herself so better for them as well.

oh and re skin conditions and people assuming/asking i have sevre eczema and have had people refuse to shake hands, or take money out of my hand, one delivery driver even refused to let me sign for a parcel as he thought it might be contagious, i explaind in a rather brusque manner that it is eczema and not at all contagious, some people are rude but in this situation if a preganant woman was concerned then i would just politely explain that she had no need for her concerns but i could understand why someone would ask :)

lazylula · 12/06/2012 08:47

Yanbu! If the spots had stabbed over then the mother could have politely said 'oh no it is ok, they are all scabbed over' would have been the appropriate an polite response. As a pregnant woman she should hav understood your concern.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 12/06/2012 09:49

Yanbu to be concerned but I'd have said something to a MW and not the woman directly. I'd be too worried incase it turned out to not be CP and I offended the woman. And also I think a MW telling this lady she and her son need to be segregated would come better from a MW.
