Perhaps the nurse who comes in to do the epi-pen training and tell us how to recognise anaphyactic shock should just send an email to the teachers? Although in my experience that has never been on an inset day anyway, I have always had to give up my lunch break to attend it.

cricketballs · 13/06/2012 16:59

I couldn't believe the response to my example of child protection training from nothing if something as important as that doesn't need time than why bother with the latest information regarding teaching & learning, specification changes, the changes to the GCSE examinations........

Sarcalogos · 13/06/2012 17:03

Quite cricket, I mean its not like teachings important, or difficult is it? Perhaps we could all give it up and they could replace us with sixth formers who don't fancy being in education any more? That should sort it. Scrap all holidays while we're at it, let parents just take kids out when they want to.

heartmoonshadow · 13/06/2012 17:06

I haven't been bothered to read most of the replies so sorry if this is a repeat but INSET days have been take out of holidays as when they came in as Baker days in the late 80's teachers lost a weeks holiday and gained more responsibilities as part of a pay package. Wish I had been a teacher then I would have voted against the idea as no amount of money is worth the grief INSET days have caused.

noblegiraffe · 13/06/2012 17:10

Just goes to show what a piece of piss some people seem to think teaching is if they think the ongoing training we need can be condensed into a memo. I mean, fuckit, why should a PGCE take a year and then another year to pass the NQT year when we could just give wannabe teachers a leaflet?

Hulababy · 13/06/2012 18:20

I agree - a MEMO is not enough for some important things. Besides - for this level of training it wouldn't be a memo, it would be sides and sides of paper. Yes, we could read it - but it;s then finding the time to prioriise that and then chadsing up examples to make aspects clearer, etc. It is such an important aspect we need to be clear about that it is far more effective t have everyone all together, to discuss it, to work through examples, etc. as a team.

This applies to many aspects of whole school training.

Hulababy · 13/06/2012 18:22

And I really still don't get why parent's have to feel so aggrieved and annoyed about this anyway.

If teacher training days did not exist then the children would still not be in school any longer. Just teachers would not have lost a week of their holiday time.

Children have never been given extra holidays; INSET days came out of teacher's holidays not out of term time

No idea why people find this concept difficult tbh.

AbigailS · 13/06/2012 18:29

OP - YABU! Get your facts correct regarding teachers holidays.
Memo for Safeguarding poster ... YABVVVVU and are totally clueless about the huge roles and responsibilities teacher have in keeping children safe. Are you that cavalier with your own child's safety?

PS Dear Mumsnet - please can we have a new "smiley" ... one with steam coming out of its ears?

Feenie · 13/06/2012 18:33

Memo on child protection???? Shock

Eejit.

NiceHamione · 13/06/2012 18:43

I teach a literacy based subject, so lots of essay marking.

NiceHamione · 13/06/2012 18:47

I missed the memo on child protection comment, fortunately we take the well being of children more seriously than that. What a shame that poster does not.

As someone well trained in CP I still value those sessions as it serves to focus my mind and remind me that too many of our children have awful home lives but may be able to do something about that.

ColinFirthsGirth · 13/06/2012 19:47

I would be rather concerned if a teacher did their child protection training by reading a memo for goodness sake. I am a parent and I am very glad that teachers have inset days for further training. In fact I know some teachers that could do with even more training.

washngo · 13/06/2012 20:42

Itdoesnthurt - totally agree. Also with you on the using own ink, paper etc. I have literally spent hundreds of pounds over the years on resources because I've needed things for lessons the school doesn't have. I could have done without them but the lessons would have been less exciting. And don't even want to think about how much my laminating obsession has cost me! I bet many many teachers have bought stuff for their class out of their own pockets. I suppose we can add that to the list of things teachers do that nobody appreciates.

Feenie · 13/06/2012 21:30

Last time we had a thread about that sevearl posters told us we were stupid and unprofessional for doing so, washngo. Hmm

Feenie · 13/06/2012 21:31

several

NiceHamione · 13/06/2012 21:32

I genuinely do think that parents are grateful for the extras that teachers do. I almost n the doorstep of the school in which I teach and therfore encounter parents all the time at weekends and evenings. They are always stopping me to say kind things and offer thanks.

JugglingNStruggling · 13/06/2012 22:00

Interestingly private schools don't have them
I think teachers should do the training in the holidays, they do have quite generous holidays

Blatherskite · 13/06/2012 22:07

Good grief Juggling. Have you read any of the rest of the thread?

backwardpossom · 13/06/2012 22:11

FFS. It is done during the holidays. What part of that don't you understand?

Hulababy · 13/06/2012 22:18

JugglingNStruggling - ime private schools DO have them. Some private schools publish them as INSET, others just include them in the holiday dates. But every school I know of has them. Also - you have realised that private schools have longer holidays as well - at least 3 weeks longer than state schools?

ilovesooty · 13/06/2012 22:19

I'm another who is bemused that the fact that training days were taken from teachers' holidays in the first place has been explained repeatedly and some posters are still too dense to understand it.

whathasthecatdonenow · 13/06/2012 22:20

sooty, their teachers were obviously too busy training to teach them the basic skill of comprehension.

ilovesooty · 13/06/2012 22:21
Grin
Sarcalogos · 13/06/2012 23:20

Independent school categorically DO have them.

For the convince of boarders (and staff) in a boarding school they tend to only
occur at the beginning or ends of term. Or in twilight sessions.

ReallyTired · 14/06/2012 09:06

"Interestingly private schools don't have them"

lol... private schools have incredibly long holidays! The private school I went to as a child had inset days, although I suspect most of them were in the holidays.

We had a month of at both Christmas and Easter as well as 8 weeks in the summer plus half terms. We also had one or two days off during the year, I assume that even private schools have to fit in when they can get hold of a trainer to do INSETS.
