Syllables in the word mosaic?

shumway · 11/06/2012 09:28

I say the word mosaic has two syllables. My sister and every other person she has surveyed says it has three. What do you think?

Definitely three. Mo-sa-ic.

LentillyFart · 11/06/2012 09:30

Three. How could you think otherwise?

Shakey1500 · 11/06/2012 09:31

Hmm interesting. I would lean towards 3 Grin though 2 sounds passable.

holmessweetholmes · 11/06/2012 09:31

Three. The OED agrees, I'm afraid! I have certainly heard people say it with 2 though.

JulesJules · 11/06/2012 09:31

3

TheSurgeonsMate · 11/06/2012 09:31

Three. Which one are you skipping?

Pascha · 11/06/2012 09:32
  1. How do you say it with two? Mo-sake?
prettybird · 11/06/2012 09:33

Three: moe-zay-ick, with the emphasis on the zay.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 11/06/2012 09:34

It's like other Greek-rooted words ending 'oic'. 'Heroic' is three syllables... not 'he-roke'. 'Stoic'... not 'stoke'.

ariadne1 · 11/06/2012 09:34

'Three. Which one are you skipping?'

she's not going to be skipping one is she? she's going to be blending two together!

ariadne1 · 11/06/2012 09:35

And for waht it's worth I agree with you that it should be pronounced Mo-zayk

ScooseLooseAbootThisHoose · 11/06/2012 09:36

3 mo-sa-ic

Youvebeentangoed · 11/06/2012 09:39

Definitely 3.

StellarforStarofAfrica · 11/06/2012 10:03

Uh oh, I would have said two. Mo-sake.

Now, I am saying three!

shumway · 11/06/2012 10:05

Yes I say it mo-zayk. Mo-zay-ik just sounds weird!

FannyFifer · 11/06/2012 10:05

Mo saic
Sounds like mo zake.

JellyBoatsAndPirates · 11/06/2012 10:10

Definitely 3 here.

jubilucket · 11/06/2012 10:11

moh-zay-yik, emphasis on the zay.

insancerre · 11/06/2012 10:12

I say it with 3

raindropsinmyhair · 11/06/2012 10:13

3 here!

JenFraggle · 11/06/2012 10:18

I've never heard it pronounced with anything other than 3 syllables. Those that only say it with 2, where are you from? Just wondering if it is a regional thing.

RevoltingChildren · 11/06/2012 10:26

Mo- zake. But hte zake is a dipthong so the syllable has 2 sounds.

Maamekin · 11/06/2012 10:30

Mo-zayk for me, more like 2 syllables than 3, but the second one quite drawn out iyswim.

StellarforStarofAfrica · 11/06/2012 11:43
