I say the word mosaic has two syllables. My sister and every other person she has surveyed says it has three. What do you think?

How do you pronounce 'heroic' OP?

VivaLeBeaver · 11/06/2012 13:03

2 here - mo-zake.

Am v.v close to Robin Hood country.

VivaLeBeaver · 11/06/2012 13:04

Heroic has 3 syllables - he-ro-ic.

halcyondays · 11/06/2012 13:09

2, mo-zake

Maamekin · 11/06/2012 13:10

Agree heroic has 3 syllables - but better to compare like with like and choose a word with "aic" at the end imo.

I would say eg for-mu-lay-ic rather than for-mu-lake, but mo-zayk Am from London.

  1. I am from the US.
ariadne1 · 11/06/2012 16:04

had a quick check with the online dictionaries and some(most) seem to favour a 3-syllable pronounciation, but the OED is going for 2.

GiserableMitt · 11/06/2012 16:07

I agree it should have three but in my world it barely has two - m'zayk :o

BadIdeaGenes · 11/06/2012 16:08

I say it with three, mo-zay-ic.

NarkedRaspberry · 11/06/2012 16:09

shumway · 11/06/2012 16:11

Heroic and formulaic I say with the -ic bit but not mosaic. I'm from the East of England.

3 syllables and I speak like the Queen would if she had spent considerable time in the East Midlands.

I'm an Australian, and go for the two syllable pronunciation of mo-zake. No logic as to why. All other -aic words I split apart as in "pro-zay-ik".

AgentProvocateur · 03/06/2017 23:18

2 - mo zake

EastMidsMummy · 03/06/2017 23:57

Three. Mo-zay-ic.

DramaAlpaca · 04/06/2017 00:00

Why on earth would someone bump a five year old ZOMBIE thread to post this? Confused

But anyway, mosaic has three syllables.

Elmersnewfriend · 04/06/2017 00:01

Zom-bie, 2 syllables

thethoughtfox · 04/06/2017 07:40

I've only ever heard 2. I feel odd now.

booellesmum · 04/06/2017 07:43

2 - mo-zayk

EastMidsMummy · 04/06/2017 14:01

Mosaic, prosaic, go say it.
