what is the point of sleepovers?

Last night DD (8) had two friends to sleep over, both are only children just like dd.

Anyway, they did the usaual sleepover things then settled to bed a 10, but they were so excited they couldnt sleep.

on child nodded off at midnight but DD and the other child were still chatting and giggling at 3.30 this morning.

DH gruffily said, thats the last time she has a sleepover.... I said, i think its quite sweet actually, they arent doing any harm.

so they were up at 8 this morning and i got up with them. DH stayed in bed till 9 and now he has gone out in a huff.

so... is he being unreasonable and missing the point of sleepovers or
am I being unreasonable asking him to put up with giggling girls at 3.30 in the morning?

I always seem to have a random teenager asleep in my DSs bedroom.

Male and female, sometimes its hard to tell though Grin

Not in his bed though,he has a bed settee thing in there.

I like the thought of a cheery hello. Trilled, presumably, at a head-splitting decibel level.

diddl · 10/06/2012 17:39

I don´t care what time they stay awake til-as long as I get my sleep tbh.

I think that HINBU to not want to put up with "giggling girls" at 3.30am

MateyM00 · 10/06/2012 21:15

the thing is... the girls and us were still awake at 3.30 this morning!

However Dd was in bed asleep at 8 tonight and DH was in bed and asleep at 9! RESULT!!!!

Ahhh! sleepovers :o

Mine sleep downstairs on the sofa bed, and assorted other bedding - they have until 1am - then I trail downstairs like an unquiet ghost saying "hush now - sleep time - or I'll sell you all for medical experiments....."

To be fair, mine and mates are normally asleep by 1 am - even the teenager... I think he's got this deep-rooted fear of me being driven to get the baby photos out....

EclecticShock · 10/06/2012 21:27

It's fun for them, not for you. It's a bonding experience.

mumeeee · 10/06/2012 21:37

My kids used to love them but there was a rule in our house that they had to be quiet after 1 am and that's when they were teenagers, If they were talking quietly we didn't mind but we always went and asked them to be quite if thay got noisy. We would not have allowed giggling and chating at 3.30am.

AllPastYears · 10/06/2012 21:43

It's not always fun for them though Eclectic - they think it will be great, then it ends in tears/fallings out/grumpiness the next day when they're exhausted.

AdventuresWithVoles · 11/06/2012 04:40

I usually have the rule that they it's lights out & all quiet by 10pm (at very latest, 9pm for an 8yo). Whispering in the dark is part of the fun! And I limit numbers, usually no more than 2 visitors.

diddl · 11/06/2012 06:38

"the thing is... the girls and us were still awake at 3.30 this morning!"

Well that´s your fault for letting them keep you awake tbh.

Fizzylemonade · 11/06/2012 06:50

We've done just 1 sleepover. Ds1 was 8 and they were still chatting at 10.30pm and were keeping Ds2 aged 5 awake. I was not amused.

All 3 children were like zombies the next day, it was awful. I haven't said no to future ones though, but they have to be in the holidays and no talking past 9pm.

Ds1 usually goes to sleep at 7.30pm and wakes at 8am so he really does like his sleep.

Aftereightsaremine · 11/06/2012 06:51

We call them non sleepovers here! They have a midnight feast & then have to be in bed by 1am. They r allowed to chat until 2 & then that us it! Most of the time they are awake by 6! That's why dds are allowed only one sleepover a year here. Dh has got used to it now.

CheerfulYank · 11/06/2012 07:23

I've had the same best friend since I was 8 years old and we still have sleepovers, 22 years later. :) They're fun, that's the point!
