My cats won't starve, just this once...

I'm just a few minutes in the door from work, my boss got home late due to the weather and offered to drive me home to save me from a long walk in the rain. I took my meds as soon as I got in and went to feed the cats, only to discover that I have no cat food. I was going to pick some up on the way home but completely forgot. I was sure I had two packets left for them both but it turns out I was wrong.

The nearest shop to me is a Tesco about 20 minutes away by bike. I'm crap on the bike on a good day, I think if I was to hop on it now in the torrential rain with my meds about to kick in and knock me out, I'll go headfirst into the canal
and the cats will eat each other while they're searching for my corpse. i don't really have any other options, I don't eat meat or fish and I'm out of the fake meat so I can't fob them off with that. I couldn't even feed myself right now if I wanted to.

Am I a terrible person? They're both really fat.

Good to know my old cat wasn't the only alcoholic feline!

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 08/06/2012 08:48

Dont give milk cats r lactose intolerent :)

LST · 08/06/2012 08:50

Not all cats are lactose intolerant. 2 of my 3 cats love milk in small quantities.

BalloonSlayer · 08/06/2012 08:58

Can't they catch anything for themselves?

If I was a bit late feeding mine they would just go out for a Takeaway. The entrails of which would usually squish between my bare toes later that evening. < shudder >

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 08/06/2012 09:10

Blimey good job this thread isn't about dogs, OP would have been strung up by post 3!
Have we heard from her this morning? You know, just in case the cats got REALLY hungry........

glenthebattleostrich · 08/06/2012 09:19

My cat used to turn her nose up at catfood. Luckily the dog loved it.

I blame my mother, whilst we were at home the cat and dog used to get porridge for breakfast Mon - Fri, scrambled egg on Sat and Bacon sandwich on a Sun. All washed down with a cup of tea, no sugar and only a little milk (seriously, I was once bollocked for putting too much milk in as the dog didn't like his tea milky).

They also used to get their own portion of take away ordered for them. If we were having a curry Mum used to order a pizza for the dog as curry didn't agree with him. They also got their own crisps and biscuits bought for them and we were not allowed to take them.

In winter the cat used to get a cup a soup when she came in from hunting sitting in front of the neigbours fire eating tuna with white bread soaked in it (she didn't like wholemeal).

Choo lived to the ripe old age of 18 on this diet, the german shepard to 15 and the yorkie to 16. Just a shame she didn't treat the kids as nicely!

MrsRhettButler · 08/06/2012 10:17

Grin MrsDeVere!

And Shock Shock glen! I'm jealous of your animals diets! I love the part where the dog gets pizza as curry doesn't agree with him!

LittleJennyRobyn · 08/06/2012 11:06

Reading glen's post reminded me a family member. She had a dog that was never given/ate dog food, she would cook it 3 meals a day

The dog was only ever given human food, would have been ok if given alongside dog food once in a while
She used to get up every morning to do it a fried breakfast!!! Shock

That dog had serious complications due to his awful diet needed hundreds of pounds worth of veterinary treatment including a big operation...she nearly killed the poor bugger!!

Also wanted to add, my one cat that eats anything..... will hunt you down if you dare open a pack of mini cheddars!!!!!

Lueji · 08/06/2012 11:12

Too late, obviously, but my cat loves cheese.

My cat also loves milk and I never noticed any ill effects. (I have only given it less than a handful of times, though)
And I know some people who prepare rice for their cats.

kittyandthefontanelles · 08/06/2012 11:18

"the guy on the other side is a violent headcase and the only other neighbour I know is a guy who I suspect burgled my house.".....................I'm sure your cats have survived, teacake but my advice re the above would be to move to somewhere safer.

catseverywhere · 08/06/2012 12:13

Soooo, cats are lactose intolerant?

Cats will not starve and die if they have to go 24 hours without food. They will try to tell you they are starving and dying, just as you can come downstairs in the morning, having left food out the night before which has all been eaten, to a scene of 'death and dying' which magically resolves itself the moment you head for the food cupboard.

MrsRhettButler · 08/06/2012 13:29

Got a bit sidetracked by alcoholic cats there but yes, NEED to know about your neighbours also...

Where is op? Do we think the cats ate her then?

JollyBear · 08/06/2012 13:38

I love the idea of giving a cat a warming cupasoup!

Milk can give cats upset tummies, especially kittens. Grown cats are usually ok although avoid if they are ill. Our old tom adores milk. His favourite treat is the top of the milk occasionally.

Trills · 08/06/2012 13:38

I expect she's probably at work or something unimaginative like that.

Themumsnot · 08/06/2012 13:45

About a quarter of cats are lactose intolerant. No reason to avoid giving milk to the 3 out of 4 who are not.

TalkinPeace2 · 08/06/2012 13:49

Oriental cats are often lactose intolerant
anything derived from blotch tabby or northern long hair cats
lurve their milk
and butter
and cream
and cheese

I'm here, I'm here, the cats haven't so much as nibbled my toes!

Okay, update. I fed the old cat some more porridge this morning, she seems to like it. Young cat is ridiculously fussy (turned her nose up at a piece of salmon I brought home from work once) and hadn't eaten since yesterday. My boss was nice enough to bring me to the shop before dropping me home so I stocked up until I do a big online shop. Thanks for all the tips and the stories about your non-fussy moggies. Old cat is quite partial to Kahlua, according to my mother....

To explain a bit about my home situation, I live in a pretty rough area, I was burgled a few weeks after I moved in, the person who did it got in through the back door which was jimmied open. This row of houses have no gardens, there's a four X six stretch of concrete to put out your laundry and that's it. The back of the house can only be accessed by going through the house or by jumping over the neighbour's walls to get in, so the person who did it lives in the area. There's a known ex-con and drug addict living down the road who's been picked up twice for breaking into houses so he's the obvious suspect. Since then, the landlord has bolt-locked my front and back doors. The guy next door is a new boyfriend of the girl living there and I hear their fights through the wall. I've called the police on him twice and don't want to a third time because he'll know it's me. I'm not in a position to move because the size and location of the house is perfect for me, I'm disabled and I'm in the best location for work, physio and the city centre where I am. Plus the cats hate each other and have divided the house equally between them, I don't want to ruin the status quo.

It's so bad that these scumbags seem to rule the roost op.

Have to tell you we were burgled in oct last year and we had just had CCTV fitted.

Got the robbing bastards in tape and police identified them, father and son, the dad has gone down for 5 years.

Can u afford to get some cameras as so reassuring when you are by yourself. My dh works away.

On car front my 2 rule the house and won't eat car food so we give them ham, tuna, cream, mild curry a and fish fingers!!

Yes I know!!

thebody · 08/06/2012 19:20

Obviously cat not car.
