Re my kids and food?

Bought mc d's on the way home from a day out, dished up, left kids (5 and 7) in the kitchen eating, I went to sort some stuff out in laundry. Kids come in 10 minutes later big smiles saying they had eaten all their tea. Immediately suspicious as the dog was hanging around and it normally takes them forever to eat, I asked if they had given it to the dog. Dd (5 and has form for lying) says no, ds who is generally more honest said yes. Turns out they ate about half a burger and a bag of chips between them.
I am fuming, not only at the wasted food (i could so have eaten the burger) but at the lie from dd. to make things worse while giving kids a good bollocking about wasting food I said the happy meals cost £2.99 each, to which ds said £2.99, that's nothing. I have therefore made him take £2.99 out of his money box, likewise for dd. I have also sent dd to bed half an hour early for lying.
I have also not allowed them to have anything else to eat, if they are hungry perhaps they will start to value the food that's dished up to them!

Asking for McDonalds and not eating it - annoying but not the end of the worls.

Feeding it to the dog - ditto.

Lying about - quite naughty and would have earned a small sanction in my house.

Being cheeky about money - punishment was entirely appropriate imo

snoopyplaystennis · 07/06/2012 20:30

hear hear whospickle

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 07/06/2012 20:31

I cook when I am fit to cook, which sometimes isn't often, depending on my health.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 07/06/2012 20:31

And? Stop splitting hairs and show me some facts.

I can't see what you point us tbh. You were judgemental.

snoopyplaystennis · 07/06/2012 20:32

And I don't think the op's kids being a bit cheeky constitutes behavioural problems

sensuallettuce · 07/06/2012 20:43

I never said they did (have behaviour problems) actually.

Having worked with young people and teenagers and the Behavioural Support Servive for some years I can tell you the kids with the shite diets are usually the ones with the behavioural issues not sure which comes first the chicken or the egg. That's my opinion I never said it was a fact. It's my observation - although there is plenty of research in this if you want to see it Google it am not trawling the net for evidence to support what I know to be true through my observations- esp for people trying to lynch me on fecking Mumsnet Hmm.

My comments in my original post were meant to be lightheaded actually as I was thinking someone wil come along and say that - not judgemental and the OP only mentioned in her 2nd post that she was PG - by which time I had already made my remark - clearly not perfect as I am a single parent?

MushroomSoup · 07/06/2012 20:44

Jesus, what a pasting poor OP has been given!
YANBU for feeding your kids fast food.
YANBU for leaving them to eat without an adult.
YANBU for making them learn the value of money.
YANBU for sending them to bed early.
Now crack open the wine orange juice, put your feet up and watch some crap TV!

crashdoll · 07/06/2012 20:44

sensuallettuce Biscuit or are you not allowed them?

OP, YANBU to send DD to bed early for lying. Not sure I would have taken money away but that's just me. Oh and hope you're not letting the sanctimonious bullshit about McD's bother you. We can't all be as perfect as some people on here, eh?! Wink

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 07/06/2012 20:45

They have ONE a month. That does not equal a shite diet.

Mumsyblouse · 07/06/2012 20:47

If they normally eat MacDonalds, you were not being unreasonable.

However, if it was the first time, then you are being unreasonable as the burgers in the Happy Meal are rank (fish fingers best of a bad bunch).

I don't think it's reasonable to charge them, their punishment is being hungry and not having Maccy D's next time they ask.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 07/06/2012 20:47

Seeing as you were joking as well you have spent a large amount of time backing yourself up.

Of course, children with very poor diets can be affected by it, I agree and understand this concept.

That's not really what you said though.

sensuallettuce · 07/06/2012 20:47

OM fucking GOD! I did not say the OPS kids have a shite diet?

crashdoll · 07/06/2012 20:49

OM fucking GOD! I did not say the OPS kids have a shite diet?

No, just told her it could give them behavioural issues which btw, is untrue.

crunchbag · 07/06/2012 20:49

YABU for justifying eating McD, who cares, it's only on MN that you get judged for it.

YANBU in your punishments but I am not quite sure why DD had to give the money as well.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 07/06/2012 20:50

You said "a few" (normally two to three I take this to mean) McDonald a month can give children behavioural problems. When I challenged it you changed it yourself to shite diet.

I am pointing out even having 2 or 3 a month as part of a balanced diet is far from a shite diet.

sensuallettuce · 07/06/2012 20:52

Yep erm whatever.

Was talking about the kids I work with?

You need to learn to read.

crashdoll · 07/06/2012 20:55

I addressed the behavioural issue in another post actually but kids eating McDonald's a few times a month will have behavioural issues IMO.

And thanks, I can read perfectly well.

sensuallettuce · 07/06/2012 20:57

I was referring to the shite diet remark actually.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 07/06/2012 20:59

Which you made?

sensuallettuce · 07/06/2012 20:59

Sorry to clarify I did not say the OPS kids had a shite diet. Although McDonald's for tea once a fortnight is a lot IMO.

That's my opinion is that ok?

marriedinwhite · 07/06/2012 20:59

I think McD's is a nice treat - about once a fortnight. I enjoy it too. I don't think it was wrong to give it to your DC for tea - I probably did when mine were 5 and 7.

May be not such a good idea to leave them on their own if they're dodgy eaters - and with the dog. But leave it at that - give them a hug - a lesson learned for all of you. Far better if you let them eat it at the McD's or from the bag in the car on the way home and squirt a bit of air freshener before DH notices.

shhhhh

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 07/06/2012 21:00

I wonder why you are asking people can they read? Can you as you don't seem to be remembering posts you have made?

crashdoll · 07/06/2012 21:01

McD's once a fortnight is fine. How is it much different from kids who eat sweet and/or crips a few times a week? Each to their own. Maccy D is not as evil as people make out.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 07/06/2012 21:01

There is nothing wrong in saying you personally find once a fortnight too much, in your opinion, but don't try and justify it by saying it will give them behavioural problems because that's just plain ridiculous.

UptoapointLordCopper · 07/06/2012 21:04

I would dock pocket money for such a comment about money too. MacD is neither here nor there.
