To correct NCT teacher

Lurking through pregnancy but thought I'd try my first AIBU

I recently went to an NCT class and spent quite a bit of the evening sitting on my hands due to the dubious nature of some of the information on pain relief. Having researched myself quite a bit, including a detailed conversation with obstetric anaesthetists and reading up on NICE guidelines I was surprised to hear the following:

They won't let you have an epidural past 8th dilated.

Epidurals are now allowed to wear off for the second stage as this reduces birth trauma.

And most strange of all, she managed in a roundabout way to link entonox with postnatal depression Hmm

There were some other inaccuracies too. As I say, I sat on my hands and didn't say much apart from a quiet comment to her when no one else appeared to be listening that I'd been told I could have an epidural past 8cm dilated.

Without wishing to start a fight on pros and cons of pain relief in labour, I do think accurate information should be given so a woman can choose accurately. I don't like to think of my fellow NCT classmates making decisions based on this but equally don't want to undermine the teacher.
So WIBU to send her an email pointing some of this out or have I missed the chance to say something without making a big issue of it. Should I have simply made a comment there and then?

Dara obrian was talking about the fact the nct teacher said a tear heals better than a cut

Which is why surgeons are now using bears for the initial incision.

BTW - anyone Irish on here? Any confusion about the NCT?

entropygirl · 08/06/2012 09:23

What confuses me is how I managed to end up with a cut and two tears....I would love to tell you which healed better as a sort of controlled trial but even thinking about it makes me feel ill.

I thought I had gotten very good with the breathing and relaxation - I had lots of practice with powerful, painful BH for about 6 weeks....but it was pissing in the wind against full labour.

I had a cut and a tear - the cut healed beautifully, the tear got infected and still stings some 32 months later.

Using bears?

Confused Grin
biddysmama · 08/06/2012 10:49

we were told that all drugs used during labour pass over and affect the baby, so ive never used them, i know its not true now but once id done it without i figured i could do it again, and again and again lol

Using bears?

You called?

Biddy - all drugs used in labour DO go through to the baby in some degree because you share the same circulation.

We can only go on the evidence we have but it's worth remembering that lack of evidence of harm is not necessarily evidence of lack of harm.

StiffyByng · 08/06/2012 12:18

Shall I add another layer of confusion to cuts/tears healing? I had a second degree tear and wasn't stitched, as my midwives said there was less risk of infection and they only stitched when absolutely essential. I gather this is considered current good practice but I am the only person I know who didn't have stitches for a tear, and my HV was apopleptic about it. It healed fine.

twofurryones · 08/06/2012 13:09

Don't know about tears, but my episiotomy was done on the side instead of the perinenum (which probably means it wasn't actually an episiotomy but I have no idea what else to call it) apparently this is meant to be better some how, not sure why, the only time it was explained to me was at the time and I'm a bit hazy on the details. I did have an infection at first but once that cleared up it healed very quickly and there have been no long term issues at all.

biddysmama · 10/06/2012 22:22

ive done it drug free 4 times now shagmund, she made it sound like something bad would happen to the baby if we used them so it scared me and i didnt, she didnt say about the differences, just that it passed to the baby and affects them

My NCT was fabulous for meeting people - still in touch now and some of my best friends.
However - tutor never even really wanted to talk about CS or Epidual cos they were so rare and it was very unlikey anyone would need one. When I asked about CS (was having ELCS she didnt know) was told it as awful and I wouldn't even be able to walk upstirs without hunching over and clutching a pillow to my tummy!!!! (I was back out running 5 miles 5 weeks after - stairs etc never a problem!!)
She was soooo disappointed with me at the reunion when she was collectiong birth stats and I told her my ELCS was by choice!!
