To use cloth?

MakeHayAndSneeze · 05/06/2012 22:20

I already use cloth nappies, cloth wipes for dd and ds, cloth San-pro, so the next logical step is cloth toilet paper as loo paper just somehow seems wrong if I'm trying to be a bit more Eco conscious. But is this really really grim? I probably wouldn't use it for poo, and suspect that DH would not be interested so it's only me ATM, and would just chuck it into the nappy bin...

AIBU to even contemplate this?

Most toilet paper is recycled and is biodegradable. So it don't feel bad using it lol.

MakeHayAndSneeze · 05/06/2012 22:34

Really? I thought thousands of trees were being cut down per day just for toilet roll.... I do try to get the recycled brands though, but find them really scratchy on my delicate nethers . Expensive, too Grin

use leaves. then just drop them into your compost heap.

GinevraMollyWeasley · 05/06/2012 22:52

Well if you were going completely eco I suppose you could cut up any clothing that just gets too worn/damaged to give to charity and erm... use it, and chuck it. Or towels?

You can make your own paper can't you, maybe collect all the junk mail and pulp them and be self-sufficiant or something!

For me, I'm all for recycling, eco everything but bog roll seems a step too far. If you're buying recyled anyway, wouldn't the cost to the environment be more if you are laundering/bleaching cloths everyday? You couldn't leave them too long! And what abpout when your DCs are out of nappies, would you do special loads just for your own 'loo roll' cloths?

MinnieBar · 05/06/2012 22:54

Google 'family cloth'.

And then wish you hadn't Grin

misslinnet · 05/06/2012 22:55

Seriously???

squeakytoy · 05/06/2012 22:56

YABU. and what happens when you have guests? would you hand them a cloth?

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 05/06/2012 22:58

What do you DO with it afterwards?

Squeaky perhaps keep one roll of loo paper for guests? Grin

"Psst...get the guest bog roll out! Aunty Mimi's here!"

Oppsididitagain · 05/06/2012 23:00

i use reusable nappies and wipes but just for me loo roll is going a bit to far but then again my best friend thinks me using a mooncup was so demented she was concerned i was about to start kissing trees and the such like.

this sort of thing is very much a personal choice perhaps you could be super eco yourself by using it but not expect dh to

another concideration what if you have visitors?

MyRoyalLentillyness · 05/06/2012 23:00

Go shit in the garden and scrawp your arse along the grass like a dog. Grin

MakeHayAndSneeze · 05/06/2012 23:13

I totally don't expect DH to - he would have a fit if I chucked out the loo roll! I'd def keep it for guests too, I suppose (seeing the reactions here Grin ) it's not something I'd shout about either. (and I think using cloth for poo would be too much although I do for the dc's - is that a double standard?). I guess I'd just chuck them in with the nappies so no extra hot water needed, and cross the bridge of potty training when we (finally) get there.

MyRoyal - i think the neighbour might object to that, our fence is quite low...!

Get one of these and a towel for drying yourself off: voices.yahoo.com/how-bum-gun-toilet-hose-thailand-the-3667987.html

Muser · 05/06/2012 23:17

I'm going to chuckle all night at bum gun now. Grin

Zondra · 05/06/2012 23:19

If it's all about the Eco thing surely, the extra electricity & detergent used will cancel out any positive impact?

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 05/06/2012 23:25

Yes, it is really really grim. Why would you want to put yourself through that? Confused

pinkyp · 05/06/2012 23:30

Shake it dry and your good to go Wink

Krumbum · 05/06/2012 23:30

Waitrose own in recycled and not scratchy or expensive.

MakeHayAndSneeze · 05/06/2012 23:49

Why would I put mysaelf through it? I guess I sometimes feel like I'm up to my elbows in waste anyway, with 2 DCs in nappies so getting a bit more personal with my own wee isn't going to hurt. Nappy wash done anyway so no extra detergent/electricity. Maybe it is a bit off the wall though, still thinking about a trial period. Feel free to call me a weirdo though! Grin

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 05/06/2012 23:54

Even number 2 waste?

Really?

Number one waste and I maybe persuaded that you have a point, but number two waste - eewwww!

auschopper · 05/06/2012 23:55

The thing is though, is what people don't really recognise or understand from my perspective is that forestry is environmentally friendly and is actually a good thing.

Think of it this way, when a tree is cut down, effectively it becomes a carbon store. So, until it is burnt or returned to the atmosphere it is storing carbon. Generally, as once a plantation is felled, it is replanted for the next generation of trees.

If you thought about it, you wouldn't put paper and cardboard into the recycling bin, you would send it off to land fill. That way the carbon gets stored...

Now, for loo paper... good luck, as think this would not be as green as you think it is... why use anything if you really want to be green.. :) Just wash your hand afterwards..

MakeHayAndSneeze · 05/06/2012 23:56

Outraged - no, I think I do draw the line at poo.

Minibar - never google anything suggested by a MNetter, isn't that the rule?! FWIW, I think the term Family Cloth is a horrible one.

Bum Gun - lovely!!!

MakeHayAndSneeze · 06/06/2012 00:00

Sorry, Minniebar - spelt you wrong earlier.

Auschopper - I could never contemplate not washing my hands - yuck!

OP posts:
slowestwildebeast · 06/06/2012 00:04

what about no flushing until a poo is done? Saving water, but wiping butt on paper?

auschopper · 06/06/2012 00:05

MakeHayAndSneeze - You would definitely want to wash your hands, especially if you used nothing but your hands..

MakeHayAndSneeze · 06/06/2012 00:11

Slowestwildebeast - we do that overnight anyway; not sure dh would agree during the day time. I also have my suspicions that he uses a daft amount of loo roll to wipe a few drops anyway so I reckon we would have blockage issues...

Auschopper Grin yes, I can see how personal hygeine would suddenly become fairly important if I was just to use my hands....
