To think that people without children should not take leave in the school holidays

I work in a place where we have to negotiate who has what weeks off, in order that we can still do our jobs properly. I've noticed that people who don't have children of school age are asking for 2 weeks off in the school holidays. I don't think this is really very fair and these people should take their leave outside the main school holidays, so that those of us who have children can take the time with them.

Am I Being Unreasonable about this?

I've never really understood why you'd want to take leave during the school holidays if you didn't have kids (obviously, unless you were holidaying with someone who works in a school or something)

Holidays are ££££ more, places are busy and packed with other peoples kids. Until mine went to school, we avoided the school holidays like the plague.

We had a woman, with no kids, who'd book every other week during the school summer holidays to sit at home, every year. As we can only have one person off at a time it was a pain in the arse. It only left 2-3 weeks for everyone else and no one could take a 2 week holiday

It used to be first come first served, but she was the person allocating leave and would be the one putting up the diary so would just book hers first before anyone else got a look in

In the end they introduced a rota system for school holidays, if you had it last year, you were back of the queue for this year

People like you give other working parents a bad name. parents do not get automatic or first rights to time off. It is wrong to expect this.

Just because these people do not have children, it does not mean that they don't have family. You time is no more valuable then theirs.

I think the system should be fair, so that everyone has equal access or a turn at choosing first, regardless of whether they have dc or not.

When I didn't have dc I would often be visiting family with dc or going on holiday with friends with dc. If I didn't get a few days off around Christmas to travel to family there were times when I would have spent it on my own. There are all sorts of reasons why people without dc would want annual leave in school holidays.
