Sorry, another driving one.

Overactive light sensor, attention seeking, or "Get out of the way, plebs"? Smile

I think it's a Scandanavian thing isn't it. Like Volvos. It's the car default.

PrematurelyAirconditioned · 03/06/2012 11:14

Safety thing - it's meant to reduce accidents very slightly.

OlaRapaceFru · 03/06/2012 11:15

I assumed they were like the sidelights on Volvos, they come on automatically - but I could be wrong.

GrahamTribe · 03/06/2012 11:16

It's a safety feature. They're called "daytime running lights".

tyler80 · 03/06/2012 11:16

I thought all new cars had to have daytime running lights now?

more · 03/06/2012 11:17

It's a law in Sweden and Denmark, not sure about Norway to have lights on at all times when driving your car. It could be that they are from there or bought the car there. They have started making the cars so that it when you turn on the engine the light automatically comes on. They say it has helped reduce accident.

Buckingfiatch · 03/06/2012 11:18

I have noticed quite a lot of cars lately with lights on during the day Hmm not just Audi cars either.

What I also don't get is those who put their fog lights on during the day when it isn't even remotely foggy Confused

ToryLovell · 03/06/2012 11:18

YY daytime running lights - DH took the fuse out of my Volvo as it annoyed me

boxyfoxy · 03/06/2012 11:21

cars in Canada have day lights as well, and more and more new cars have this feature, not sure why it bothers anyone.

MarysBeard · 03/06/2012 11:22

My lights might come on automatically if I go through a tunnel of trees or into a multistorey carpark, or if it's a dark wintry day, but it otherwise just seems a waste of energy to have lights on in the daytime. Seems rather counterintuitive to all the energy saving technologies going on with cars now.

My dad has a new VW and it has daytime running lights on all the time. Think it will be standard on all cars eventually.

GrahamTribe · 03/06/2012 11:24

Mary, the Audi's are LED bulbs which use far less energy than normal dipped headlights.

Psammead · 03/06/2012 11:25

Audi is German, not Scandinavian.

But it's probably the daylights thing.

WhatWouldJoanJettDo · 03/06/2012 11:26

Audi is German - dayrunner lights there are mandatory, as in most other Euro countries. My BMW is the same way - I think all German cars are. The only problem is that now, if I drive a different car, I tend to forget to turn on the lights when they're actually necessary...

Psammead · 03/06/2012 11:28

Dayrunner lights are not compulsory here in Germany. I have never seen them on any car other than Volvos, although motorbikes seem to nave them.

Or I may just be incredibly unobservant Grin

FreudianSlipper · 03/06/2012 11:29

its a safety thing, porches and new golfs have them too

They will be compulsory fairly soon, IIRC. The EU wants every car in every country to have its lights on all the time, for safety', y'know.

Collision · 03/06/2012 11:31

DH is italian and an Audi driver and he ALWAYS drives with the lights on! Tis the law in Italy but makes me Hmm

dontlaugh · 03/06/2012 11:34

It reduces accidents in winter time by up to 75%.

Idlegirl83 · 03/06/2012 11:36

I always have my lights on in the day - I drive a small car and having my lights on definately reduces the amount of people who nearly pull out on me at junctions.

Pan · 03/06/2012 11:43

Ditto Motorbikes - it's always considered best to have lights on motorbikes - reduces the 'didn't see you there mate' chances a wee bit.

aldiwhore · 03/06/2012 11:54

Fog lights on with no fog is a no-no (illegal I think?????) as they're superbright and dangerous.

Normal lights... I don't get the fuss about it either way!

I always put my lights on, force of habit.

QuintessentialShadows · 03/06/2012 11:55

It is the law in Norway too. It is for safety.

Where did that stat come from?

IloveJudgeJudy · 03/06/2012 12:18

DH's Vauxhall has this, too. I think it would be a great faff to turn them off. He thinks they look quite aggressive. I agree with him. My DB's Saab used to have them, but he could quite easily turn them off. I don't understand why they're the law in Italy - it's not a dark, wintry place like Scandinavia.
