To take children on holiday still in their school uniforms?

I've cocked up the timings for our great half term getaway and forgot that the kids are at an after school event until 6 which means that if we're going to get our flight then there's literally just time to bundle them into the car and head straight for the airport. I haven't got space to pack a change of clothes for them in hand luggage and there won't be time for them to change before the baggage gets checked in.

AIBU to expect them to be happy wearing their uniforms for a 5 hour flight then transfer at the other end?

Mine wouldn't be too pleased, I have to say. Can't you take then a change of clothes and let them change in the car, leaving their uniforms in the boot when you park at the airport?

Gumby · 01/06/2012 17:00

it'a fine
they're probably wearing shorts & a t shirt or a summer dress?

MrsMellowDrummer · 01/06/2012 17:00

Well it depends on your children. It wouldn't bother mine at all - they'd just be thrilled to be going somewhere nice on a plane to be honest.

ShatnersBassoon · 01/06/2012 17:01

Change in the car.

DressDownFriday · 01/06/2012 17:01

YABU.

Can't you put change of clothing in car and get them changed when you park - leaving their uniforms in the boot.

diddl · 01/06/2012 17:02

How old are they?

Can they change in the car when you get there?

tumbleweedblowing · 01/06/2012 17:04

YANBU - what an adventure! Your trip is so exciting that you don't even have time to change. I'm jealous!

In all seriousness, what's the problem? School uniform is comfy, it won't matter if they get it mucky en route, and it's one less thing to worry about.

But I really do think it would be cool.

Crown - just for the sake of it.

cuntrybumpkin · 01/06/2012 17:07

They're 12 and 14, and being girls there's no way they would possibly want to change in the car, especially since their friend's coming too. I've ballsed up big time and they'll be not impressed

if it is at school, can they change there and stuff the uniforms in a locker

if not, they have a choice- miss the event, leave early enough to get changed or travel in uniform

give them the options, let them choose.

Hopandaskip · 01/06/2012 17:10

change airside at the airport then. Not ideal, but better than the alternative. Can they not bow out of the event at school long enough to change in the loos?

OhTinky · 01/06/2012 17:11

Leave the event a bit earlier and take outfits in so they can get changed in the toilets at school before leaving?

cuntrybumpkin · 01/06/2012 17:12

They can't choose, they're still at school - it's a Jubilee tea party type thing so they may not even be out dead on 6 depending how clearing up goes. Bollocks

Wont there be room in their hand luggage at all for a change of clothes?
Jeans and a tshirt in a carrier bag then change after check in once they're through security?

eurochick · 01/06/2012 17:15

I really don't see why they can't change in the car. Take a rug and they can take it in turns to change under it.

quirrelquarrel · 01/06/2012 17:15

God how exciting! was my first thought when I read the OP
Have a brilliant time. When I was a kid that would have been so thrilling- going straight from school in the evening to the airport, all the hazy dark atmosphere and promise of the holiday....

Surely if you're just sitting in the plane, it doesn't matter if they're wearing uniforms...if they're uncomfortable, change in the loo when you're in the air, or remove blazers/ties in favour of fleece etc.

diddl · 01/06/2012 17:16

So you knew about the event before you booked the flight?

Can they miss it and you collect at the time school usually ends?

avivabeaver · 01/06/2012 17:16

so, really they ARE travelling in school uniform- not the end of the world!

i am devious and would invent some crisis so they cant blame you- potential traffic jam- problems at airport- we have to go NOW etc etc.

LadyBeagleEyes · 01/06/2012 17:19

Can't you just take them out of the event early as you have a plane to catch?
You're cutting it very fine if they don't even have time to change before they leave.

MsKittyFane · 01/06/2012 17:20

I don't see the problem in them leaving the event 10 mins early to get changed (as someone else said) in the toilets. Leaving their uniform in the car. it's up to them really. Leave early or go in uniform.
Don't forget Bank holiday /Friday eve. traffic. The motorways around Manchester airport (for example) are horrendous on a Friday especially Bank hols.

Nagoo · 01/06/2012 17:21

I'd pick them up early. There is no way I would be cutting it so fine to catch a flight.

cuntrybumpkin · 01/06/2012 17:21

I knew about the event, it just hadn't registered that it wouldn't be finishing until 6pm ish. Fuckity fuck.

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 01/06/2012 17:22

I don't think it matters , why would it?

MsKittyFane · 01/06/2012 17:23

Also don't understand why they can't miss a jubilee tea party (is the Queen in attendance?) :o

MmeLindor. · 01/06/2012 17:25

Um, I think you are making too big a deal out of this.

Get them to change in the car, or don't get them to change. It is not the end of the world.

If they won't change in the car then they have to go in uniform. Their choice.

When is your flight and how long is drive to airport?

diddl · 01/06/2012 17:25

Me neither, MsKitty

Especially after hours on the day school breaks up!

(Which I thought was todayConfused
