To take children on holiday still in their school uniforms?

I've cocked up the timings for our great half term getaway and forgot that the kids are at an after school event until 6 which means that if we're going to get our flight then there's literally just time to bundle them into the car and head straight for the airport. I haven't got space to pack a change of clothes for them in hand luggage and there won't be time for them to change before the baggage gets checked in.

AIBU to expect them to be happy wearing their uniforms for a 5 hour flight then transfer at the other end?

If they're 12 and 14 they can make the decision for themselves. Change in the car or wear their uniforms on the plane. No moaning allowed - they are going on holiday ffs!

Have you even asked them about this yet?

I really cannot for the life of me see how this is such an issue..

"girls, unless you want to travel in your uniform, you will need a change of clothes in the car for when I pick you up"

for heavens sakes, they have a choice, they either travel in uniform, not exactly going to create any difficulties, or they wriggle into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt while en-route to the airport.. I cant imagine why any teenager would have a problem with these choices..

RubyFakeNails · 02/06/2012 17:04

Its not really a big deal, but I would take the change in a plastic bag, they either change in the car or check in and then change in the toilets at the airport and just take a plastic bag of their uniforms on board.

Considering the sheer amount of shite and the volume of some peoples hand luggage I can imagine 1 or 2 plastic bags of uniform will cause a fuss although why they can't change in the car or quickly in the toilets at school is beyond me.

I did this.Picked the DC up from school at lunchtime on route to airport.they looked kind of odd checking in at a hotel in Lanzarote in school uniform TBH

AnnieLobeseder · 02/06/2012 17:06

I'd tell them they can either fly in uniform, have their own change of clothes organised or miss the holiday. It sounds a bit overindulgent to worry what they think about their attire when you're taking them on holiday. Sounds like a bit of a lesson in priorities and gratitude wouldn't go amiss.

but the OP hasnt said that the girls are having a strop... she is just assuming that they will.. Confused

CrispyCod · 02/06/2012 17:10

Surely the teacher won't have a problem releasing them for the last 10 mins so they can make a quick change. It's a one off after all.

WorraLiberty · 02/06/2012 17:13

It's a total non problem

As Crispy says, the teacher is bound to release them a bit early considering it's an after school voluntary event.

And even if the teacher didn't, all they have to do is wear a vest top under their blouses and slide a pair of leggings on in the car.

Hulababy · 02/06/2012 20:48

Well, they have two choices don't they? They can travel in uniform or they can try and change in the car - shimmy into leggings and a top or whatever, not that difficult tbh. They are big enough to decide themselves.

what does it matter?
