to not use anti ageing cream at 25?

somedayma · 31/05/2012 22:00

I know I am being unreasonable. I use olay anti ageing eye cream at night when I remember which isn't v often. I'd like to start using a face cream but I looked in boots and superdrug today and...holy shit, WHY IS THERE SO MUCH CHOICE? Can anyone who takes better care of their skin than me suggest one maybe?

With SPF. no more than £15 (am I naive to think I can get a good one for that price?)

I started using it at 13- YANBU imo

somedayma · 31/05/2012 22:05

13! I'm really late aren't I...?

I'm 33 and don't use any anti aging creams at all. I am happy as I am and hope to grow old gracefully.

somedayma · 31/05/2012 22:10

I smoked for a few years so my skin could def benefit from some sort of luxury care. No wrinkles at all so far but time's ticking

I dont trust anti aging claims per se, but do believe in sun damage, so I use boots factor 50 face cream - it suits me and is cheap - £8, but it is always on 2 for one. It's in a yellow tube.

PatFenis · 31/05/2012 22:13

I'm 39, very nearly 40 and have always used a good old slavvering of Nivea on my face every morning and night and have very few wrinkles for my age - I wouldn't dream of spending £15 on a face cream!

somedayma · 31/05/2012 22:16

so should I stick to a good moisturiser with high SPF instead of an actual anti ageing product? I also used to use sunbeds occasionally... drip feeding my skin sins out of shame...

I read somewhere you should spend your age on face cream- so I should apparently be spending £25. And twice as much when I reach 50

Im 44 and i stick olay or clinique moisturiser on once in a blue moon and thats it.

I simply don't remember unless my skin feels dry.

PatFenis · 31/05/2012 22:35

I don't think there is any such thing as an anti ageing product. There is no miracle cure for aging and even if there was I'm sure it won't be found at the bottom of a tub of cream of 'Extract of Swans Placenta' or any such nonsense.

Aging has a lot to do with genetics anyway, some people are lucky enough to have good skin which keeps its elasticity - some aren't so lucky and no amount of expensive creams and potions will prevent wrinkles.

Drink plenty of water/fluids ...tea/wine in my case and moisturise morning and night - its working for me so far Grin

KitCat26 · 31/05/2012 22:45

I'm 29 and don't use anti ageing creams but do use factor 30 sun lotion every day. My theory is that if its the suns rays that age you, protect against that. Reckon I'll still look like a prune when I'm 70 though Grin

somedayma · 31/05/2012 22:47

so...plenty of moisture/fluid/sun protection. rather than anti ageing cream. Hmmm

It's not unreasonable to not use anti ageing cream at any age. You'd get more benefit with a good basic moisturiser and staying out of the sun.

somedayma · 31/05/2012 22:52

I love the sun. Sigh

I have started using the avon stuff (mostly because I am a rep and get it for free, but I don't think this counts as advertising because, well, you don't know who I am and you buying it from a random rep doesn't benefit me at all) when I remember, and it does feel lovely on my skin. Not sure if it is making much difference, but I was starting to get fine lines and a deep wrinkle in my forehead. I'm all for ageing gracefully, but not while I still have teenage style spots! I'm 27.

StepOutOfSpring · 31/05/2012 22:58

Go for moisturiser with sun protection. Sun is the main cause of wrinkles, and smoking.

somedayma · 31/05/2012 23:04

I've never used any Avon products. Not for any reason, I think I just prefer to peer at the boxes on the shelf for hours before I decide! Is 15 a high enough SPF? Most of the moisturisers I looked at today seemed to be 15. But I read on some website you should aim for 30

OP posts:
sashh · 01/06/2012 04:58

I'm 45 and have never used any.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 01/06/2012 05:20

I've just moved to California so am slathering factor 50 on daily

Thankgodforcaffeine · 01/06/2012 06:27

Nivea q10. £9.99 with spf 15. Works for me!

BrittaPerry · 01/06/2012 11:18

All Avon stuff has 90 days to return it for any reason, even if you have used it, so you can actually have a try and see if it suits you. They recently had an offer where you got the day cream, night cream and eye cream from one set (they do different ones for different ages) for £20, which I thought was really good. It has finished now, but they have been making Anew for 20 years, so there will be loads of offers this year, and all the reps are getting extra info etc on skincare.

Avon Connects - Find A Rep

(I'm not even registered for customer leads on there - you have to be doing it longer, so again, I'm not doing this for my own benefit)

Cockwomble · 01/06/2012 12:36

Stop using sunbeds

I use whatever anti aging cream is on offer. I can't go down the route of just a good slathering of any old cream as I have acne prone skin.

MsVestibule · 01/06/2012 12:51

I've got very fair skin and have been using face moisturisers with an SPF since I was in my mid-twenties. I'm now 41 and my skin is still fecking gorgeous!!! I always wear a broad brimmed hat and big sunglasses on holiday, too. Nor do I smoke or use sunbeds. Paragon of virtue, me; no wrinkles at all but starting to sag a bit Sad.

SPF 15 is fine for every use, but definitely not for sunbathing - you'll need at least 30 for that.

HTH. I'm quite evangelical/obsessive about sun protection, so thanks for giving me the chance to stand on my soapbox Wink.

CremeEggThief · 01/06/2012 12:57

34 and don't use any. Don't moisturise very often either, once or twice a week, and very rarely wear make - up (I remember putting a dab of foundation on for Easter Sunday dinner). I try to stay out of the sun as much as I can and drink lots of fresh water. I think those are the best things you can do for your skin.

SCOTCHandWRY · 01/06/2012 12:58

The only anti-ageing products which have been proven to work (reducing fine lines, sun damage and also reducing the risk of malignant melanoma on sun damaged skin), in proper scientific trials, are creams containing Retinol, essentially a mild acid peel in a daily cream. For best effect, you need to build up your skins tolerance to it especially if you have sensitive skin like mine - or you can burn the skin. Once a day to start with, for the first couple of weeks, then twice a day.

I use the Loreal products (revitalift) but boots does a cheaper version (I don't think it's got as much retinol in it tho').

SCOTCHandWRY · 01/06/2012 13:01

And I rarely use make up - when I do it's organic mineral stuff (due to very sensitive skin).
