Hi,
am i being unreasonable to put the formula milk into the bottle before the water?
My partner tells me that i must put the water in first to ensure the exact consistancy. to look at the bottle once it has been made up there is a difference of maybe 5 - 10 ml.
is it detramental to do it my way?

Personally I think you'd get issues with powder clumping, but I can't see how it would change the consistency of the eventual mixture as long as you make sure it all mixes properly.

I hope you're using nice hot water though :)

Gigondas · 31/05/2012 08:44

Agree with Herrena - providing you have hot water and right amount of formula and it's mixed up.

ENormaSnob · 31/05/2012 08:45

Yabu

Unless you measure the water separately you will not get an accurate amount. This can be dangerous.

valiumredhead · 31/05/2012 08:46

Water first then powder and shake so you get the correct amount.

Northernexile · 31/05/2012 08:49

Agree with ENorma. The instructions on all the packs say water first. Why don't you just follow the instructions? If you put the water in first then you know you have the right amount, eg 5 oz. If you put the powder in first then add water, then there will not be enough water, and I believe this can lead to issues such as constipation. The instructions are what they are for a reason.

ddubsgirl · 31/05/2012 08:50

water first then powder, did that with all my kids and thats what it said in the tin of powder.,

Birdsgottafly · 31/05/2012 08:53

I agree with those that say water first.

www.mumsnet.com/babies/bottlefeeding

I don't see a reason as to why you wouldn't do something as fundamental as feeding as directed, just because 'you don't want to'.

ENormaSnob · 31/05/2012 08:54

It can lead to dehydration which in turn can lead to severe electrolyte dysfunction which can be fatal.

Constipation also an issue which is painful for the child.

Why wouldn't you just follow the instructions? It isn't any harder to do it the correct way.

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 31/05/2012 08:55

You have to do it the right way round because you need 8oz water to 8 scoops powder (or whatever the heck it was, it's 15 years ago for me). If you put the powder in first, then put water in up to the 8oz mark, you'll only have added about 6oz water and the mix is too strong.

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 31/05/2012 08:56

(unless you're meaning that you measure the water separately first?)

QueenOfF1amingEverything · 31/05/2012 08:58

You have to measure the water first as otherwise you will add too little. 8oz of water will make more than 8oz of prepared formula as the powder also takes uo some room.

Even a difference of 1oz less water can make a small baby ill over time. So YABU and I'm suprised you even need to ask - have you not read the packet instructions?

(I take it you are the partner of the poster who had the opposite AIBU last night?)

Kitty5824 · 31/05/2012 08:59

Ummm, so why don't you make a bottle up as instructed and check what volume of formula you actually end up with and make a note of it.

Then make up however you wish, just top up with a bit more water if necessary to make it up to the correct volume.

Voila!!

GnocchiNineDoors · 31/05/2012 09:01

Is this a thread on a thread?

Wonders if her dh has finally decided to come over to the dark side and join mumsnet Grin

Herrena · 31/05/2012 09:04

Actually op, other posters have a point about adding water first.

Back when we made it up as 240ml water + then 8 scoops powder, we noticed that the final fluid level would end up at roughly 260ml.

What we now do is add ~120ml of water to the bottle, then add 8 scoops and swirl it around (back when we added the full volume of water up front then there tended to be a lot of spillage). We then usually add water until the level of fluid in the bottle is around 260ml.

DS has never had issues with constipation and seems very healthy, so I believe this method of prep is fine.

Herrena · 31/05/2012 09:05

Ah, I see I'm doing what kitty5824 said! X-posted Grin

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 31/05/2012 09:06

YABU you would never be able to get the amount of water right if you put the powder in first unless you measured it separately. When I make an 8oz bottle for my son with 8ozs of water and 8 scoops of formula I actually end up with a bottle that contains just over 9oz of fluid.

Noqontrol · 31/05/2012 09:06

Water first. Otherwise you don't make it up accurately.

LST · 31/05/2012 09:08

Defiantly water first.

ENormaSnob · 31/05/2012 09:09

I just love it how people pile in and say well I did this and my baby's fine.

Anecdotal evidence means shit.

Read the research behind the instructions.

CharltonHairstyle · 31/05/2012 09:11

Water first. It is simple really, just follow the instructions in the pack --even though my OH still manages to cock it up-

Herrena · 31/05/2012 09:14

AFAIS, I explained my approach clearly and went into detail about how I end up with the same result as when tin instructions are followed to the letter.

The anecdotal evidence was included to reassure the op. Besides I seem to be the only person who's included any so how is that 'piling in'? Hmm

GnocchiNineDoors · 31/05/2012 09:16

If it is MY dh who has started this thread (and I suspect it is) can I just say partner ? Erm, wife, darling.

ENormaSnob · 31/05/2012 09:17

I actually hadn't read your post herrena.

I was on about the last thread.

Fwiw, if you prefer to not follow the instructions why not just measure the water seperately? Surely that's easier?

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 31/05/2012 09:17

herrena just out of curiosity, why do you prepare bottles that way? Not judging, just it seems like more faff than pouring in the water then spooning in the formula...
