Hi,
am i being unreasonable to put the formula milk into the bottle before the water?
My partner tells me that i must put the water in first to ensure the exact consistancy. to look at the bottle once it has been made up there is a difference of maybe 5 - 10 ml.
is it detramental to do it my way?

Because on the tommee yippee bottles they are at different levels, I'm the only person I know who uses mls.

Thankfully DS is moving on to cows milk now.

EasilyBored · 31/05/2012 10:02

The powder does tend to clump on to the scoop (think it's the steam from the water). I put the powder in first and then use another clean bottle to measure the water and put that in. Unless I have no clean bottles left, then I put the water in, and either scoop the powder in, or use one of thise little pots you measure the powder into for traveling - that gets round the clumping issue.

I just don't see why you would do it any other way, it's dumb and saves you what, 10 seconds?

EasilyBored · 31/05/2012 10:04

Hang on, a tub of UK formula, that says one scoop to one oz of water, is actually talking about US oz?!

thefurryone · 31/05/2012 10:06

Er technically easily bored you don't actually follow the instructions to the letter either, they clearly show the scoop above the water.

roundtable · 31/05/2012 10:10

Yes, it's uk-mls, us ozs. I really don't know why companies don't write that on their packaging. I just worked it out.

I think companies presume that their customers realise the law has changed, but for many, it's ingrained to use ozs.

My avent bottles have uk and us ozs on it.

EasilyBored · 31/05/2012 10:10

I don't follow the instructions to the letter, but I use the correct amount of water (or so I thought!), rather than just guessing how much it should make up once powder is added.

FoxyRoxy · 31/05/2012 10:17

Yabu. Just follow the instructions. It doesn't take a genius to work out they're there for a reason.

Yabu for starting a thread about a thread as well.

EasilyBored · 31/05/2012 10:18

Huh, who would have thought. Hmmm. Seems like it would be more sensible to use slightly differnt sized scoops in the UK - 1 scoop to 1 oz of water is far less easy to cock up than 3 scoops to 90mls etc. Or just put US fl oz on the package instructions?

roundtable · 31/05/2012 10:26

Agree

All they need to do is put four little letters in front of ozs and problem solved. Ridiculous.

Oh and op, yabu, just make it properly.

thefurryone · 31/05/2012 10:28

But I don't just guess the amount of water, I don't think well today I think we'll have 4 scoops and 300 ml, I make it pretty much to what it would be the other way round using my judgement that there will be a small margin for error built based on what I'd interpreted the oz/ ml thing to mean, and just general involvement of people. Pretty much everyone I know who FFs to do something differently than the next with formula, from making up in advance to leaving the kettle for different amounts of time, to taking out water that must get below 70 degrees.

Formula has also never been DS's main drink, so I'm probably slightly less fastidious than I would be if he had been exFF.

DS now moving off formula, will BF next one all being well as this is just all so much more complicated and worrying than lifting up top and undoing bra.

Ithinkitsjustme · 31/05/2012 10:33

I seem to remember putting the water in first (and getting very fed up with powder sticking to the scoop) but on occasions when I was going out, I would put the formula in the bottle and then pinch water from somewhere when I was out, so it probably wasn't as accurate. It never seems to affect any of my kids adversely.

leftcheeksqueek · 31/05/2012 10:49

thank you for your comments.
I think from now on i will put the scoops of powder in first and then top up the bottle with the correct measure of water.
gnocchininedoors...you have busted me, hope there is not an atmosphere tonight x

Shock he`s an inner Nethun.

bloody kisses, can tell this is your first time.

MoonlightandRoses · 31/05/2012 11:52

leftcheek - just to be sure - you are going to be measuring the correct amount of water separately yes?
When using this method you need to really swirl the bottle well afterwards to mix the formula. Otherwise you will find a sediment of un-dissolved formula at the bottom of the bottle.

P.S. - Glad you are going to go as per the manufacturers and health professionals instructions. (My comments on your previous actions are on your DW's thread, so won't repeat here.)

PooPooInMyToes · 31/05/2012 12:17

So you've been doing it wrong for months despite your partner pointing out it is wrong, inaccurate and potentially dangerous and now all of a sudden you are going to do it the right safe way?

Why didn't you just do that in the first place?

Why haven't you either read the bloody boy yourself or listened to your partner seeing as she HAD read the box?

Do you think you know more about formula manufacturing then the manufacturers? Or do you think you can read better then your partner without actually reading? A sort of psychic superiority reading ability?

HipHopOpotomus · 31/05/2012 12:35

Follow the instructions on the packet - what do they say?

I've never made a bottle up myself, but I am aware that it's very important that the ratio of water/powder is correct.

This is presumably your babies only sustenance for now - why wouldn't you want to get that correct, especially as getting it wrong can lead to serious health issues for your baby?

HipHopOpotomus · 31/05/2012 12:36

why would the powders tick to the scoop? surely you don't put the scoop into the water?

CakeBump · 31/05/2012 12:41

Bless your DH Gnocchi, I recognised him straight away!

OP LISTEN TO GNOCCHI!! SHE KNOWS!! :)

PooPooInMyToes · 31/05/2012 13:15

Hiphop. No you don't put the scoop in the water. I think he means because of the condensation. Its only a tiny amount anyway which i would imagine the manufacturers have made allowances for. Although like his partner has said, he could just leave the water for twenty mins and then it isn't an issue.

HipHopOpotomus · 31/05/2012 13:17

ahhh - cheers

BroomForMyChin · 31/05/2012 13:27

I'm confused! I've been doing one scoop to 1 oz of water? Putting water in first obviously and the adding powder. Should I be following the ml instructions?

roundtable · 31/05/2012 15:00

what sort of bottle are you using broom?

Look at the ml measurement for 30 mls. It should be in line with the 1 oz if it's us ozs.

If the mls line is higher, then it's uk ozs, so you need to use the mls.

DuelingFanjo · 31/05/2012 15:14

wasn't there a thread on this last night but from the wife's perspective?

SpottedGurnard · 31/05/2012 17:15

Why would you invent your own way of doing it? Why not just follow the instructions? After all, it's your baby's health you are risking.

Grow a pair. Admit you are wrong and then grow up.

takingiteasy · 31/05/2012 17:17

There is no debate. There's instructions. Follow them.
