AIBU to think that smoking should not be promoted

in outside areas of cafes and bars by ash trays being placed on each table.

I am getting a bit tired of the best areas (for hot weather) in bars and cafes being totally taken up by smokers. In some cafes it's like a sea of smoke due to smokers being forced onto these tables.

Aibu to think it would be nice to sit outside and not be surrounded by smoke? It inevitably forces the non smokers inside and perpetuates the problem.

Could cafes have an allocation of tables for non smokers outside to stop this problem?

Redruby

What do you mean by that?
Am I not allowed to back up my statement that you made a Hmm face and sceptical comments about?

YANBU and by all means if you believe they are promoting smoking then you must report to the ASA as Im sure it is now illegal to advertise smoking

let us all know what they say please

ErikNorseman · 30/05/2012 13:51

They put ashtrays to save on sweeping the floors. If there were no ashtrays people would still smoke but just flick ash and butts all over the floor!

AmandaLF · 30/05/2012 14:30

Just wandering if it was table service or bar service? Either way the waiter could have taken it or you could have taken it in.

HipHopOpotomus · 30/05/2012 14:33

Choose table.
Move ashtray or ask waiter to take it away.
Pretty simple really.

I do understand your point OP, and it probably will happen eventually - but a few years from now.

helloclitty · 30/05/2012 14:51

just to clarify
It was a cafe, there were no staff waiting tables, all other tables taken and the wind was blowing ash over my food and onto the table. My DS decided it would be nice to make patterns with the ash on the table, my hands were full at the time trying to sort out DS2 and sorting bags at that time.

I understand IABU but it's so annoying.

I think I understand what you mean OP

What you want is the right, when the weather is fine, is to kick the smokers out of the area that they've used for the rest of the year, because you and your children want to use it now.

YABU

helloclitty · 30/05/2012 15:11

No
I'd like to be able to sit outside with smokers AND non smokers when the weather is fine. Unfortunately I see that often it is only smokers outside and non smokers inside.

TapirBackRider · 30/05/2012 15:17

You can't have it both ways, you know.

The law was changed so that smokers must be outside, and you are free to go and sit outside if you want any time of year.

Strangely enough, it's only in the warm weather that non smokers kick off about sharing outside space with smokers, and sitting in a 'sea of smoke'. Hmm

2shoes · 30/05/2012 16:44

op you seem to be obsessed by this.
maybe a smoke would help

EXmrsmascarahead · 30/05/2012 16:59

If the ashtrays are stopping the non-smokers from sitting outside, then I am all for keeping them on there, it means I can sit down and smoke my fag in peace and I won't be hanging around in doorways causing an obstruction.

vintagewarrior · 30/05/2012 17:39

That's so weird, I was going to start a thread wondering if there are any cafe's where i can smoke a nice fag, without moany old cows & annoying kids sat outside, clearly promoting moaning and having kids?

well most cafes will be child free and moany old cow free outside because they tend to be full of people smoking. I can't imagine that it would be a problem for you vintage warrior
