AIBU to be a bit Hmm about a woman I was talking to giving newborn baby 3oz of water in a bottle when hungry?

Breast milk gets thinner in hot weather, formula doesn't, hence babies sometimes needing a big of cooled boiled water.

wigglesrock · 28/05/2012 19:59

GodisaDJ I'm really almost positive Grin that you should not mess about with the amount of water used to actually make up formula.

I have formula fed 3 children and to be honest have never given them water until they're were starting weaning. I gave dd3 a little when she was 4 months and we were on holiday but not as a matter of course.

Dprince · 28/05/2012 20:23

Wiggles is right. Adding more water to formula is a big no no. Hvs usually advise not to and the manufacturers also advise not to.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 28/05/2012 20:24

FGS its fine, it was 3oz and its roasting.

RandomNumbers · 28/05/2012 20:28

it's because of the danger of water intoxication, but shrug because y'know, I am an ole fusspot

Yeahthatsnotgonnahappen · 28/05/2012 20:31

I have had the advice that if FF extra water is needed in hot water. I think its because they'll just fill up quickly as formula is quite 'heavy' but nt actually get enough water out of it. Breast milk will adjust accordingly.

FoxSake · 28/05/2012 20:32

In a ff baby I'd say it's fairly sensible in this weather and yes perhaps itnis constipated at least they weren't giving fresh orange juice like my HV recommended for dds constipation that wasn't constipation just bf baby.

Yeahthatsnotgonnahappen · 28/05/2012 20:32

hot weather obviously. not hot water.

LST · 28/05/2012 20:33

It was just because the baby was hungry that's why I was wondering.

I'm just going off what a BF lactation consultant (and previous midwife) told us. She trains HV's in the area on BF'ing / common problems etc.

To put it in context, you wouldn't be adding water to every feed as that would be very dangerous - by adding water to formula the baby may drink the same amount and not get enough calories and of course this can result in poor growth. But if we're talking about 1oz extra on a hot sunny day then that risk is very low and the babys' thirst is met IYSWIM?

I'll double check my understanding this week though, would hate to be giving this advice if incorrect Wink

Noqontrol · 28/05/2012 20:49

I think YABU. You can give ff babies cool boiled water in hot weather, well according to my hv you can anyway.

LST · 28/05/2012 20:53

Yes I know but when their hungry?

lola88 · 28/05/2012 20:57

My DS was so badly constipated as a newborn that we had to give him an extra oz of water for every bottle so 6 through out the day between feeds this was advised by both HV and doctor. If he didn't get the water he would scream in pain for hours then have tiny tears on his anus because his poo was so hard. Unless you know the ins and outs you shouldn't judge.

crashdoll · 28/05/2012 20:59

I was under the impression that even FF babies were not supposed to be given water at all under 6 months of age but that might be outdated advice.

LST · 28/05/2012 21:00

I'm not judging!!!! FGS! I only asked. And one once every other hour is different than 3oz all at once when the baby was hungry.

mosschops30 · 28/05/2012 21:01

It is perfectly normal to advise mums to give CBW in a bottle, even bf babies.

None of your business whether you thought baby was hungry etc, you havent been with them for the last 24 hrs i presume?

BoffinMum · 28/05/2012 21:02

Formula used to be specially prepared for each baby by family doctors, I think. It varied a lot more than formula does now, which only comes in a couple of types. So formula has to try to please all of the babies all of the time. This may be why some get constipated.

LST · 28/05/2012 21:05

I was there for 4 hours.

I'm not judging I was asking a question. I just thought that it was quite a lot of water for a tiny baby that's all. I didn't say anything to the person so I haven't done anything wrong.

All I have done is asked a question. Jeez.

Frakiosaurus · 28/05/2012 21:14

Even in hot countries water isn't advised for BF babies because BM cleverly adapts :)

tethersend · 28/05/2012 21:15

It was the Hmm wot done it, LST.

You asked a question with a Hmm, a face which lends itself to judgement very well Grin

mosschops30 · 28/05/2012 21:15

fraki we advise it here even for bf babies, especially if mum says shes not drinking much

LST · 28/05/2012 21:18

Oh sorry. I didn't know what else to put. It seems to work ok for other MNtters.. Blush

If you eat your carrots cut into rounds instead of batons. You will die. FACT.

LST · 28/05/2012 21:19

Baby was v cute btw and was making me incredibly broody (even though I was there only 6 months ago)

OP posts:
biddysmama · 28/05/2012 21:20

i didnt think you were suposed to give ff babies water anymore because formula has been changed to be hydrating now.
