I had been invited for an interview for a maternity cover contract. Unfortunately the interview date was when I was away abroad for the week and asked them if we could reschedule to a later date.

This was the reply I got:

"Thank you for your e-mail.

Unfortunately due to holiday/diary arrangements we are unable to reschedule your interview.

If we are unsuccessful in making an appointment following the interviews, we will be in contact with you"

AIBU to send this back:

"Thank you very much for getting back to me. However, I must say that it is incredibly disappointing that not more effort can be made to re-schedule the interview. Unfortunately it does not give me a very favourable impression of the sort of person and company I would potentially be working for. I would therefore not be interested in an interview if you were not to find the right candidate with the current interviewees."

Maybe call and ask to speak to someone first.??.... tbh it is weird for them not to reschedule, but maybe if they are seeing lots of candidates they can only get the interviwing "team2 available for that week / day? I would call and explain to HR as if you are away from home / abroad it is impossible for you to change your plans. It might be a standard response and if you call they might be more forgiving. I guess as to whether YABU, it depends how much you want the job.......

Bumblefeck · 28/05/2012 16:13

That sounds really snotty to me. If you are disappointed then just say that, no need for snipes about how they can't re-arrange everything round your holiday

YABU

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 28/05/2012 16:13

YABU!!! If you hadnt noticed we're in economic crisis with loads of people going after one job! They probably have a gazillion amount of people to interview and it's not their problem you are away!

If you def dont ever want to work at the company then yes go for it - they certainly wouldnt give you a job with an attitude like that!

FatherDougalMcGuire · 28/05/2012 16:15

What Betty said. YABU and a bit naive!

Posterofapombear · 28/05/2012 16:15

You know that your interviewing for a job with them right? They don't owe you anything.

I would never consider employing anyone who took that attitude to things not going their way.

kilmuir · 28/05/2012 16:17

they are obviously not desperate to have you!

TheMonster · 28/05/2012 16:18

Don't send it.

GobblersKnob · 28/05/2012 16:18

YABVU, why should they reschedule to suit you?Confused

HelloShitty · 28/05/2012 16:18

YABU. If you sent that reply back to me, I'd be very pleased that we'd not wasted our time interviewing you.

GobblersKnob · 28/05/2012 16:19

Oh and don't send it, it makes you sound like a tit.

schobe · 28/05/2012 16:20

Erm....how to put this....if you send that, they'll be thanking their lucky stars you couldn't come to interview. What purpose does that serve?

Interview panels tend to require a smattering of high level people, in some cases heads of HR, CEOs, heads of departments - these are busy people. All candidates have to be offered the same opportunities at interview - same panel, same conditions, same questions asked in the same way etc.

I think the decision lies with you - you either want/need the job and change your holiday, or you don't.

BobMarley · 28/05/2012 16:20

Well, I'm obviously not a favoured candidate anyway as otherwise they would make more effort to re-schedule. I think it is incredibly inflexible to not bother to re-schedule the interview and very disrespectful.

An interview process is a 2-way street as far as I'm concerned and I would probably not want to work for a company or person that thinks it is acceptable to treat people this way.

OTheHugeManatee · 28/05/2012 16:20

Is it a very senior job you're going for? If that's the case then it might just be ok to take this tone. Otherwise I'm afraid YABVU.

Sposh · 28/05/2012 16:20

Unless they headhunted you you're going to look like a moron if you send that. I hope they don't have any other positions in the future that you might be interested in. I expect an email like your reply would do the rounds in the office pretty quick and they'd all have a good laugh at your expense.

HMTheQueen · 28/05/2012 16:21

I work in HR. If we received an email like that we'd laugh and probably shred your application. We had 250 people apply for 1 post the other day.

1 person unable to make an interview is no big deal at the moment. It is an employers market.

manicbmc · 28/05/2012 16:21

Do you want a job or not? Hmm

Tee2072 · 28/05/2012 16:21

Wow. If you sent that to me when I was hiring, I would have shredded everything you ever sent me and keep note of your name.

YABVVVVVVVVVU

BobMarley · 28/05/2012 16:21

Well I want the job, but I don't need it. I have a job at the moment and also have another job interview this week somewhere else. I'm absolutely not re-scheduling my holiday as I'm obviously not a favoured candidate so am probably filling up their candidate list (it is public sector).

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 28/05/2012 16:22

You will sound like an utter knob if you send that.

Which you may not care about.

Anyway, if they really really wanted you, they would have rescheduled.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 28/05/2012 16:22

Treat people in what way?? Oh dear, you do sound very entitled. Good luck in your job search..mind you, if you do manage to secure a job I think they are the ones who will need good luck.

The world doesnt revolve around you!

Gumby · 28/05/2012 16:22

Why would you send that?
They might not find a candidate so might ring you
Or have another opportunity
If you go round being arsey you'll never get anywhere

schobe · 28/05/2012 16:22

"Disrespectful"

I'm speechless Grin

Shutupanddrive · 28/05/2012 16:22

Yabu, you won't be doing yourself any favours if you send that. They will just be glad that they didn't rearrange for you with that attitude.

An interview is a two way street, but currently if you advertise any vacancies you get hundreds of applicants. In my business for the two of us to do interviews it takes a tremendous amount of rearranging and putting off clients. So yes unless applicants are truely special we will move on to the next candidate.
