I had been invited for an interview for a maternity cover contract. Unfortunately the interview date was when I was away abroad for the week and asked them if we could reschedule to a later date.

This was the reply I got:

"Thank you for your e-mail.

Unfortunately due to holiday/diary arrangements we are unable to reschedule your interview.

If we are unsuccessful in making an appointment following the interviews, we will be in contact with you"

AIBU to send this back:

"Thank you very much for getting back to me. However, I must say that it is incredibly disappointing that not more effort can be made to re-schedule the interview. Unfortunately it does not give me a very favourable impression of the sort of person and company I would potentially be working for. I would therefore not be interested in an interview if you were not to find the right candidate with the current interviewees."

Gosh sometimes I really wish people would read the whole thread before they comment.

I know the email was unreasonable and that is why I didn't send it.

Are you the sort of person who asks shop assistants, 'do you know who I am'? Sorry but that email is laughable.

SauvignonBlanche · 28/05/2012 17:50

I interview a lot for the public sector, as I said if there's only a couple of candidates you might consider rescheduling.
Typically, there's at least 20 applicants and you'd narrow it down to about 6 for interview. If 5 can make it, why would you go to a load of hassle for one candidate?

mynewpassion · 28/05/2012 17:50

If you knew it was unreasonable, why bother asking? You must have not thought it was unreasonable until the MN Jury loudly proclaimed you to be unreasonable.

Dprince · 28/05/2012 17:52

Op get over yourself you posted while I was writing. I have read the thread. Even thinking about it makes my post applicable.

BobMarley · 28/05/2012 17:54

dprince I actually sad that everyone was right about it being unreasonable on the second page of this thread...

OP posts:
BobMarley · 28/05/2012 17:55

mynewpassion if i thought it was reasonable i would have sent it without asking the mn jury!

Dprince · 28/05/2012 17:57

Yes and I said even thinking about it makes you unreasonable. You were thinking about surely or is this thread a completely pointless one?

BobMarley · 28/05/2012 17:59

Yes in the heat of the moment i wanted to send it and wrote but didn't. That never happened to you? Wow, you must be a saint. I am certainly not.

no I am not a saint. But don't think I am so unique that someone should rearrange their plans when I won't. Especially when you wont be the only person they are interviewing. Your response would not have been mine. I would have been disappointed, but would have hoped they didn't find the right person.

LAlady · 28/05/2012 18:03

I recruit and if you sent that message back there's no way I'd ask you back under any circumstances.

BobMarley · 28/05/2012 18:05

To be honest i didn't really think about the fact there might a whole panel they might have to accommodate. In private sector this is usually not the case. I haven't really worked in the public sector but have had two public sector interviews where they both indeed had a panel of 4 (!)

OP posts:
BobMarley · 28/05/2012 18:06

LAlady are you referring to initial email in my original post or the email i did actually send?

OP posts:
lambethlil · 28/05/2012 18:06

I get why you wanted to send the original email OP and good for you for rethinking!

LingDiLong · 28/05/2012 18:08

I apologise Bob, I hate it when people don't read the thread properly and always make sure I read the whole thing before replying. Must have somehow missed your replies on page 2. I hope you get a successful interview anyway, whether with this job or another one.

LAlady · 28/05/2012 18:08

Sorry, didn't read the whole thread - have now. Very glad you didn't send the initial one

klaxon · 28/05/2012 18:10

I am reminded of the time I was setting up a group of interviews and one chap emailed to request we move his interview to later in the day as 'I don't really like getting up early and I'm going out the night before.' Hmm

OP, bless your cotton tail, I do hope you can find a sense of humour on your holidays, it is quite funny that you are getting so het up. I know, you've invested an hour or so filling in an application form but it's no-ones fault, these things happen.

BobMarley · 28/05/2012 18:22

Hardly the same though is it klaxon?

NetworkGuy · 28/05/2012 18:23

Did you hope this would be a long-term thing (ie after the post holder returned to work, there may be another opportunity with this employer) as it's a bit much to get steamed up over if you're in a job and have another one you're considering too...

Can understand the 'heat of the moment' and glad you settled for the more positive second message, rather than your original idea.

Hulababy · 28/05/2012 18:30

Many places have set dates arranged for interviews, esp for an advertised post with more than one applicant.

I work in schools so this is always the case. All interviews are on the same day for a post and if you can't make it then it is tough.

BobMarley · 28/05/2012 18:32

networkguy the job suited me because it was temporary, we are planning to emigrate in about a year and I am currently in my first role (also maternity cover) after being a sahm mum for a few years. This role was the right sort and level of role for what I would like to pursue in the future. The job I have an interview for is permanent and will put me in an awkward position down the line, which I would rather avoid.

OP posts:
scuzy · 28/05/2012 18:41

what makes me laugh is even in your second revised email you said to yourself that if they get back in touch with you you wil re-consider. who is interviewing who here??

scuzy · 28/05/2012 18:43

And if I do hear from them I will decide then if I want to go to the interview

Hmm
BobMarley · 28/05/2012 18:44

scuzy any interview is for both the employer and employee to decide if they want to work together. If i now don't want to work there then that is my decision, rightly or wrongly.
