To feel so angry about our neighbours constantly 'visiting' our garden and house!

Firstly I hate cats anyway. But our neighbour has 3 Siamese cats. They are horrible, aggressive, territorial cats who use our garden as a toilet, and come in to our house if a door is left open (which in this weather is quite a lot)!
They even climb in to the car when I'm unloading the shopping.
One night last summer when it was really hot I found one in my DD's bedroom. It was 4am. It scared the he'll out of me!
I HATE cats and feel like I can't have my doors or windows open because of them!
It's ridiculous. Can I do anything about it? So far I've bought all of the so-called anti-cat devices & plants etc Needless to say, none of them work!

Wish I could have some of what you've had this evening!

Female cat adores me, follows me around, always wants to snuggle up to me.

Tis not love, tis ownership, she has completely and utterly bonded to me, dh will fill the role adequately provided I am out of the house.

They are bl**dy strange animals.

longbay · 26/05/2012 23:07

Thanks moonlight hopefully one of the suggestions will work

I'm just having lots and lots of pregnancy hormones! But it also helps if you use your demon voice, too!

HelenofSparta · 26/05/2012 23:13

How about marking your territory (and therefore asserting dominance over them). Do you have a dog who could come and wee in your garden/boundaries? Would human pee work? - it puts off foxes apparently....
I have two pedigree Persians, but they are house cats so do not cause any trouble!

MoonlightandRoses · 26/05/2012 23:23

Grin at Helen's 'marking territory' suggestion. Mind you, they would probably just ignore at the moment as they don't see the OP as superior at the moment.

3duracellbunnies · 26/05/2012 23:23

We used to have lots of poo from neighbours' cats, but since they have adopted our garden (more junk shade) than ours, they no longer poo in our garden. Generally cats don't like to poo in their own territory. If you make your place out of bounds they may sneak in for a quick loo stop. They are scared silly though by ds, so find yourself a toddler to 'stroke' them. He is actually very gentle with animals, but they never give him a chance to catch them, but are big softies when they see me.

Do you know anyone with a dog who you could dog sit for over summer? Might scare them without you committing long term to a pet. Make it a yappy one if possible. We had a jack russell when I was little, she had zero tollerance of furry intruders on her patch.

giraffesCantFitInThePalace · 26/05/2012 23:32

I don't think this is meant to be a funny thread but am finding it hillarious - maybe I have sun stroke?! Good luck op.

Where do you live? I want to come round and help you get an asbo for noise!

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 26/05/2012 23:43

If I had neighbours cats persistently coming into my house I'd buy a cat transportation cage. The next time the cat came into my house, it would find its way into the cage and would end up at a shelter far far away.

Poulay · 26/05/2012 23:49

I hate cats.

Can't you plant some poisonous plants?

Poulay · 26/05/2012 23:53

Also tiger shit apparently works well.

Contact your local zoo.

likeatonneofbricks · 27/05/2012 00:30

that's not fair that cats 'do nothing' - they guard against mice! Op, maybe your house would be affected by rodents if it wasn't for cats - which would you prefer? Although I don't like the Siamese for their horrid screechy voices, but generally like cats AND dogs. Throwing stones = extremely cruel so is driving over one, can't believe someone posted that Angry. OP I think you'd like a gentle domestic cat, some are very affectionate, you just dislike wild unruly ones!

swampster · 27/05/2012 00:37

When we moved to a house with a garden that had been the local cat toilet for years, I finally managed to see them off by regularly putting LOADS of pepper on every hard surface, sticking hundreds of bamboo barbecue skewers sharp side up in any bit of earth they could park their furry arses, and covering the ground in pelleted chicken manure fertilizer which swelled up into ginormous chicken turds when wet.

It seems they don't much like wading through other creatures' shit.

Needless to say, this was long before I had any children.

5Foot5 · 27/05/2012 00:45

"Pop balloons when they come in the garden/ house. Do it a few times so they associate the balloon with a loud noise, then tie a few balloons in the areas that they frequent."

Oh oh how many helium balloons would it take to float a cat? Not enough to send it dangerously high just enough to freak it out a bit. Sorry I have been drinking.

Normally I would suggest scaring them in all the usual ways but it does sound like siamese are a singular breed and I have no experience of them.

Agreed yu can't throw stones but have you tried spoons? Sorry. I didn't know you cared.

Poulay · 27/05/2012 00:48

Maybe you could shoot them with nerf guns?

MarySA · 27/05/2012 00:58

I read once that you should put down lion poo in your garden and no cat will ever come near. Difficult though if you don't live near a zoo. I've got a cat and would be mortified if she was annoying neighbours like this and going in their houses.

Longdistance · 27/05/2012 01:03

I'm sure I read somewhere, that they hate anything citrus. It usually repels them apparently.

I am surround by a very large number of cats and yet we've still had bloddy mice in this house.

Lion poo - you can buy it on-line but from what I've heard it doesn't work and I don't think it would help with them coming into the house.

My mother always used a broom when she had this problem. She never hit the cats but chased them with broom and very damtaic sweeping and alot of yelling.

lostInMyHouse · 27/05/2012 01:06

cirtus - again you can buy alot of products with cirtus in - but actual peel won't work and some cats arn't bothered by it.

giraffesCantFitInThePalace · 27/05/2012 01:14

I read citrus as circus and thought aah because of the lion poo....

Mspontipine · 27/05/2012 01:21

They run at the sound PSSSSSHHHH!!!

BustersOfDoom · 27/05/2012 01:30

To stop them getting into the house you should check out those mesh door screens. A former colleague of mine used to breed and show Maine Coons and they were never allowed out of the house. She used to use those door thingies so she could have the door open in warm weather without them escaping. I always felt sorry for the poor things, denied a trip out into the garden. The best they could get was to sit at the door looking out into the forbidden land. Having said that tho I am thinking about getting some to keep flies and wasps out. I am scared shitless of wasps Blush.

And I'm a cat person but my next door neighbour used to have two Siamese cats. They were a menace! They used to wee on her bed and on the carpets regularly even thought they had litters trays and a cat flap to go out whenever they wanted to. They also used to gang up on the other cats in the neighbourhood, mine included. They were a right pair of bullies!

And lion poo doesn't work. Super soaker with lemon scented water should do the trick. Best thing ever though is to get your own cat! Ours chases all the others out of our garden. She is very territorial, although she is as soft as anything. Thankfully they leg it before she actually has to do anything to defend her territory Grin

Latara · 27/05/2012 01:35

A water pistol??!! My cat is a long-haired Persian - she loves water & would actually think you were 'playing' if you aimed a water pistol at her.

It's true that they know if you are scared of them & will really take the piss.
(A bit like dogs & gangs of teenagers really!)

Stones, sharp objects - just cruel; i wouldn't even do that to the cat-sized rats in this area. Taking a cat to another area in a cage - not nice; for some owners their pets are like their children. If you have issues with someone's pet then tell them - the owners may not know how badly their cat is behaving.

Dogs - cats hate small dogs because small dogs are mean with big egos! My old neighbour had a Yorkie who actually seemed to want to kill my terrified cat. However; my cat scares the life out of another neighbour's large Collie.

Two things are good at scaring off my cat: a) Men's loud voices (although sometimes she sees men as a 'challenge' & actually loves their attention!) and b) The Hairdryer.
The evil combo of noise & fur being blown the wrong way by The Hairdryer sends my cat racing for cover. When she is naughty & hiding under the bed - I only have to plug the hairdryer in & she's out & off down the stairs.

But Siamese cats do not have the same 'fur issues' as Persians - so a hairdryer may not scare them.

I was attacked by another neighbour's Burmese monster cat who decided it had the 'right' to attack my cat & get into my house.
The noise of a metal pan hit with a wooden spoon; combined with full on aggression (staring, shouting with loud, deep voice) meant that Mr Burmese Monster was so scared that he stayed 'Orf moi laaand' for good.

Siamese cats are similar in personality to Burmese cats so the 'loud noise with openly aggressive body language' should work for you too... good luck!

Greatauntirene · 27/05/2012 03:46

I'm sure I read somewhere, that they hate anything citrus

Squirt them with those plastic lemons full of lemon juice.

Latara · 27/05/2012 05:35

My fly repellent contains Citronella.
My cat hates the smell but STILL follows me like my shadow...!!!!

But my cat IS unusual...

In fact she would enjoy fighting those Siamese bullies & chasing them into their own home - I suggest getting a similar 'feisty' (the Vet's description of her) Persian-type Female Rescue cat.
You may need to protect yourself by Ugg Boots indoors - but don't worry, they settle down after 2 or 3 years.... & after 5 years i've stopped needing gloves when i brush her daily :)
But a cat like mine would definitely mean no other feline visitors EVER AGAIN!
