To not pay for ebay tickets now Elton is sick!

I bought some tickets to see Elton John from ebay yesterday. I had every intention of going this weekend to collect and pay cash. I saw on the news today that Elton is quite ill and now I'm really concerned the concert wont go ahead. I can't see how I would have any comeback to get my money back from the seller who seems desparate for the cash and almost threatening. I appreciate her feelings but if it does get cancelled she will get her card refunded by the ticket agent whereas I wouldn't have a leg to stand on! AIBU to be worried about losing £160?

On the telegraph site it says he has cancelled next months tour with billy Joel.

maddening · 25/05/2012 21:02

yabu, they were sold in good faith and you chose ebay as the purchasing method - understand why you feel like this though

S1eepy · 25/05/2012 21:04

Not looking hopeful, such a shame I was really looking forward to going with my sister who is coming to visit from Australia.
Thanks for the info, i just can't take the risk of losing so much money

I know maddening, I feel awful but sometimes you just can't afford principles. I think the seller will get a refund anyway if he cancels so she'll be ok.

really. he's due to play in Falkirk (of all places) in June. has it been cancelled?

S1eepy · 25/05/2012 21:14

he's cancelled his American dates and told to rest for a week. The concert I was going to is just over a week away so it's looking dodgy. I would have loved to go, I'm gutted

Well if the seller will get a refund from her credit card, and you won't, then I think that's fair. Did she sell them for a hugely hiked up price or something? Shame about Elton though, he's fab.

squeakytoy · 25/05/2012 21:20

yanbu for the reason that she can get a refund, you cant..

trixie123 · 25/05/2012 21:33

I can see why you feel that way and I would suggest asking her if she has considered getting a refund but you say you can't afford to lose the money - well, either you can afford the tickets or not, regardless of if you go to the concert, you'll still have spent the money so that's not really a reason.

Marne · 25/05/2012 21:36

Usually i would say YABU and you should pay but this time i think the seller should not sell and claim her money back for the tickets (i'm sure all ticket holders will be refunded), if the concert is not going ahead then you have just forked out £160 for a bit of paper. I wouldn't pay.

HeadfirstForHalos · 25/05/2012 21:37

If it doesn't get cancelled will you still go? You could ask the seller to wait for payment until you are certain the concert will go ahead. If it gets cancelled she won't get your money but will get her money back from the original booking. That way neither of you are losing a large amount of money either way.

LowFlyingBirds · 25/05/2012 21:39

You dont know she'll get a refund. She may well have bought them on ebay herself.

I understand why you would rathe not part with the money now but it would be reallyshoddy behaviour imo.

When is the concert?

Tell her that you WILL come and collect (and pay cash on collection) as planned.
But tell her you will come the day before the gig instead of this weekend.

You will know by then if the gig is canceled and if it is she will already have her money back. So you wont have to worry.

ALTHOUGH as someone who had been to a lot of gigs, when a gig is canceled for a legit reason is is usually rescheduled as apposed to completely canceled, either that or ticked holders are offered the chance to attend another gig at a later date.

maddening · 25/05/2012 23:17

ask her if she can get her money back or not - if so do as per sparkly's advice

tittytittyhanghang · 25/05/2012 23:50

YANBU, If there is a high chance of the concert being cancelled then personally I would think it a pretty dumb move to buy tickets to it where potentially you won't be able to get your money back.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 26/05/2012 00:04

How do you know she paid by credit card?

And you don't know if the concert will be cancelled (I hope it's not).

YABU though, you have already bought the tickets and you should pay for them because you really don't know how she paid for them or if she will get her money back for them.

fivegomadindorset · 26/05/2012 00:07

You bid, you won, you pay.

ENormaSnob · 26/05/2012 01:31

Isn't it a legally binding contract?

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/05/2012 01:37

Don't pay. Assuming that she bought her tickets legally, then she can claim a refund. Although she might have bought from ebay and be selling them on.
Immoral I know, but I wouldn't pay. Like someone else said, you're paying £160 for a piece of paper (unless you'd get an automatic ticket for a rescheduled gig).

GwendolineMaryLacey · 26/05/2012 01:42

YABU. You bought the tickets, you should pay. Why would you enter into a contract if you only intend to follow it through when it suits you? Quite apart from anything else she'll be landed with the seller fees.

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/05/2012 01:46

But the seller is hardly saintly , there is usually smallprint on or with the ticket that says you're not supposed to sell the ticket on, is there not? The seller was taking her chances when she ebayed it, which was probably out of greed. So neither party can claim the higher moral ground, and if I still had my money I'd be keeping hold of it.

this doesn't make sense. either you can afford to go to the concert or you cant. saying you cant afford to have principles means you cant afford to buy the tickets in the first place. buying them and going will cost you the same as buying them and it being cancelled. you wont be out any extra money just because it is cancelled. you bought these tickets and agreed to pay for them so that is what you should do.

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/05/2012 01:58

You can only get a refund with the original receipt, not with an ebay receipt. And the refund would only go back to the bank account that originally paid for the ticket, hence the seller could get a refund but if the OP buys the tickets from the ebay seller, she can't.
Sorry, I'm not really lurking here I'm just stalking round acitve convos.
