AIBU to like the idea of a drinks cabinet?

...or should I retire to the 70's where I probably belong.

We bought furniture which has a perfect section for a 'drinks cabinet'. No automatic light though nor glass shelf but it'll do. DH just gave me 'a look' though for suggesting it.

So, AIBU?

Would you like a hostess trolley too? Wink

karatekimmi · 25/05/2012 17:49

I have a drinks cabinet on my welsh dresser. Bought it, filled it, got pregnant, look longingly at it!

Westcountrylovescheese · 25/05/2012 17:51

I'm pregnant now, is this nesting in a mirroring my mother way?

Oh a hostess trolley, now there's a thought...

Only if its one shaped like a globe.

IdontknowwhyIcare · 25/05/2012 18:08

Well where are you supposed to keep your drinks? We have a large butlers tray full of bottles and the overflow go on the sideboard (is that another old fashioned peice of furniture). If we didnt have those I would have no idea where to keep all my lovely bottles of alcohol.

tartyflette · 25/05/2012 18:15

Oh yes, a drinks cabinet is a must. If all the bottles are not hidden away, people might discover your secret creme de menthe habit.
Our drinks cabinet is vair tasteful, btw. (it is, IT IS!)

Westcountrylovescheese · 25/05/2012 18:29

Phew. Well maybe I'll let DH win this time (seeing as there is no glass shelf and no light). ...but then scour eBay while on maternity leave waiting to pop for one of them globe ones. He will surely not argue when I've just produced him a son will he? By the time he's realised 'es been 'ad I'll have filled it with Creme de cassis, sherry and that bottle that's half something black and sweet and half cream. (and I'll be about ready to get stuck in).

There's something symbolic about opening it and announcing it's time for drinking. These days, can you get one with an integral fridge?

Gumby · 25/05/2012 18:44

My inlaws have got one of those globe things
No idea why as they hardly drink

alistron1 · 25/05/2012 18:47

I have a 1950's drinks cabinet, I used to display my fancy glassware on it. However due to having two sons it is now my dressing table!!

marriedinwhite · 25/05/2012 18:54

We have friends with a drinks (beer/wine fridge) in the lean to. Does that count? We use a cupboard in the dining room alcove Grin

marriedinwhite · 25/05/2012 18:58

And have just remembered DH had his eye on his grandad's padded 50s bar with integral light but his auntie got first dibs - phew!!

I want a bar a la pat butcher! Optics and all!

NinthWave · 25/05/2012 19:53

There's a shop in Greenwich called Flying Duck that used to have the most AMAZING coctktail bar for sale, shaped like the front end of a cruise liner. I coveted it like you wouldn't believe.

My mum has a lovely drinks cabinet, she's hoping to move house soon, she wants me to help with the search, I'm planning her to find her a house in which the cabinet won't fit

OP YANBU

misslinnet · 25/05/2012 20:14

YANBU, drinks cabinets are great. Stops your booze being scattered all over the house in an untidy manner.

takingiteasy · 25/05/2012 21:14

Exactly miss. There is nothing worse than tripping over a bottle of tanquary on a midnight trip to the loo.

rhondajean · 25/05/2012 21:17

I have one door of my sideboard dedicated to spirits. Wine goes in the wine rack and beer in the fridge.

Is that acceptable?

Coops79 · 25/05/2012 21:20

My DH bought me a fabulous Globe style drinks cabinet (I'm sure Henry Higgins had the same one in My Fair Lady). It is utterly out of place in our 1970s semi but I don't care. The map is a copy of a sixteenth century Italian one and has sea monsters and rhinos marked on it. I realise how cheesy this.

Babylon1 · 25/05/2012 21:23

We have a separate fridge for beer cider and White wine, a rack for red wine a cupboard for spirits and an optic in the kitchen for Malibu Blush

Not that we drink much BlushBlush

GetDownNesbitt · 25/05/2012 21:24

I have a 1970s cocktail cabinet in glorious Formica. It is a thing of beauty. It lights up when you plug it in. It is my inheritance from FIL - he isn't dead yet but gave me it earlynjust in case...

iloveeverton · 25/05/2012 21:26

I have a drinks fridge!

Dh wanted to build a bar! No no no way.

WaitingForMe · 25/05/2012 21:28

I have an original 1960s cocktail cabinet with an integral light. I mix drinks and my husband gets sleazy. It's just like being in a Bond movie Grin

OMG, OMG, I need that in my life just so I can drunkenly shout "I'm the king of the world!" Can you imagine? And it would in no way be embarrassing to the kids...
