AIBU to like the idea of a drinks cabinet?

...or should I retire to the 70's where I probably belong.

We bought furniture which has a perfect section for a 'drinks cabinet'. No automatic light though nor glass shelf but it'll do. DH just gave me 'a look' though for suggesting it.

So, AIBU?

I think I need one of these in my life...

Westcountrylovescheese · 25/05/2012 21:40

Glass shelf. Check

Integral light. Hmmmm

Nearly perfect, loving these ideas!

What's wrong with a hostess trolley?

I have one with integral wine rack and drinks cabinet

Pearla · 25/05/2012 22:04

Ooh YANBU, I love a good drinks cabinet, I have an antique oak marble-topped washstand and use it as one! Pretty bottles are displayed and ugly ones kahlua, cheap vodka go in the cupboard bit underneath with the various glasses, tumblers and drinks apparel.

Although admittedly I have always dreamed of having one of the globe ones!

Westcountrylovescheese · 25/05/2012 22:16

Globe ones are about £100 on eBay... I'm loving the idea of a hostess trolley too! Could you have an integrated wine rack in it?

I would totally love to have a fully stocked drinks cabinet. But unfortunately I don't think I could trust myself to leave it alone Sad.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 25/05/2012 22:20

I have a drinks cabinet. And a pineapple ice bucket.

WannaBeWildCosMyLifesSoTame · 25/05/2012 22:20

Not at all, I'd love one but we had to put our wine rack in the garage to hold all the empties because we could never keep it full long enough - God knows what we'd be like with a whole cabinet!

I'd love a proper drinks cabinet with the right glasses for the right drinks and a whole array of different drinks and ingredients like Pop has in the Darling Buds of May - actually that's described in the book as being like a galleon so probably quite similar to the one mentioned above.

A tale of warning my friends - I used to get shitfaced by taking a little bit out of each bottle in my parents' prized drinks cabinet. I do look back fondly though.

JoannaFight · 25/05/2012 22:26

My parents have one. It has a pull down door which you use as the table on which to pour out the drinks.

One Christmas my dad was pouring out quite a number drinks then for some reason, known only to him, Confused proceeded to close the door with all the drinks still on itGrin

Westcountrylovescheese · 25/05/2012 22:51

Pineapple ice bucket! Wow! Yes, that is something I need.

I've wanted a drinks cabinet globe forever and I don't even drink spirits.
My parents have the full drop down, mirrored shelf, light that comes on when you open it up. I also used to sample the contents in my teens.

underthepalmtrees · 25/05/2012 22:57

No, you're not being unreasonable. AT ALL. You're being even less unreasonable if what you actually want is not a drinks cabinet, but one of those drink globes a'la Del Boy double from Only Fools and Horses in the episode 'Miami Twice.' Grin

Primafacie · 25/05/2012 23:02

I just bought a drinks cabinet! It's very unconspicuous though, but it still counts, doesn't it?

Westcountrylovescheese · 25/05/2012 23:07

Prima, if you put a pineapple ice bucket in it then that surely forgives the inconspicuousness....

I am jealous of globe drinks cabinet ownersEnvy. I covet one of those with some fantastic liqueurs to go inside & an ice bucket & tongs.
My parents had the drop down mirror & glass shelf one (in the 80's) which DM had to get rid of when she downsized. Feel all nostalgic for it.

StealthPolarBear · 25/05/2012 23:11

Sheradins, ooh I want some

Westcountrylovescheese · 25/05/2012 23:23

Yes! That's what it's called! Sheridans! Does anyone know of anyone who has ever purchased a bottle. It's one that seems to just 'turn up' a bit like Pernod and ginger wine. To be fair though, I have purchased ginger wine, but I did have a cold....

rhondajean · 26/05/2012 00:09

I once had a bottle of sheridans, I bought it, the dregs may still be In the drinks cupboard...I'll look hang on...

Yes! It's still there.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 26/05/2012 00:25

I have a 1950's Beautility sideboard that has a middle section designed to be a drinks cabinet. I didn't intend to use it as a drinks cabinet but DH found my gin stash (only one bottle that I occasionally have a small measure of gin and a large measure of lime from as a treat, DH would drink the entire bottle just for the sake of it).

I'd hidden it in an old sugar puffs packet but one morning when we ran out of normal cereal my secret was revealed. DH hates poor old Beauty though so I hid the gin in there and so far so good. Hidden in plain sight.

MCos · 26/05/2012 00:30

V. bad idea once you have teenagers.
I remember siphoning off drink from bottles in the drinks cabinet, and adding a little water to bring back the bottles to a similar levels. Depending on how many friends I planned to share with, several drinks might have been mixed together in one soda bottle. Early attempt at punch!

DD1 getting close to being a teenager. I'm going to stick to cork topped wine bottles once she gets to her teens... But I'm unlikely to miss a whole bottle of wine. So maybe that plan won't work either.

MCos · 26/05/2012 00:32

ha ha Yama - shared experience!

FridayOLeary · 26/05/2012 09:42

My uncle used to have a display shelf of miniatures he'd brought back from his travels. I was most surprised one year when the cousins took us into the room, shut the door and said "where did we get to?" - they'd started on one side of the room and were working their way round replacing the contents with coloured water Shock
