to ask how clean you expect a friends house to be?

Holding a last minute BBQ and want to as I can't be arsed to scrub tickle the house before our friends arrive

Bathroom and kitchen and manky fridge are a must, I know ... but how far would you go? Do I need to hoover up the crumbs under the sofa cushions? Dust the picture rails? Or just spray pledge and hope no-one is that bothered Wink

Personally for a BBQ it wouldn't bother me if a friend's house was a tip, as long as the kitchen was clean and hygienic. You don't prepare food under the sofa cushions, do you?

hopenglory · 25/05/2012 08:51

If they will be coming in to the house I make sure that the floor isn't too crunchy and that there is a reasonable chance that they can use the bathroom without the risk of catching some sort of fatal disease

mummymeister · 25/05/2012 08:53

Clean kitchen, clean fridge, clean toilet then close the doors on all the other rooms and lock them if possible. they are coming to see you and enjoy your lovely company not marvel at the variety of crumbs under your sofa. a clean house is a sign of a wasted life imo

ditavonteesed · 25/05/2012 08:55

clean toilet and kitchen sink should do it.

summerintherosegarden · 25/05/2012 08:55

Clean toilet! I wouldn't care about anything else as long as the kitchen didn't look like a petri dish in action...

chocoroo · 25/05/2012 08:55

Kitchen, bathroom, downstairs floors and tidy. In that order. The bedrooms would just get the doors shut so noone could see the piles of crap inside.

jubilucket · 25/05/2012 08:58

Loo, kitchen, vacuum downstairs. Spare bogroll in downstairs loo. Discourage anyone from going upstairs (assuming you've got a downstairs loo) with a neatly placed washing basket full of clean linen or similar strategically placed, that way the corner of the landing that's out of sight can be full of all the kid's crap you've hoicked out of the sitting room and can't be arsed haven't had time to put back in their rooms.

Morloth · 25/05/2012 08:58

Clean kitchen and bathroom, everything else is irrelevant.

squeakytoy · 25/05/2012 09:00

and clean BBQ is a must!!...

went to a friends once, and he had a really lovely posh gas bbq, huge things... he rolled the lid up and there were so really vile green furry things that had once possibly been burgers and sausages, left from the last bbq and forgotten about... Confused

squeakytoy · 25/05/2012 09:00

apologies for typos in that last post... not enough caffeine intake yet today..

GiserableMitt · 25/05/2012 09:01

Kitchen and toilet are a must. I would tidy any downstairs bits that people might see, but that isn't a huge priority as everyone will be outside anyway.

ENormaSnob · 25/05/2012 09:11

I clean the whole house and garden tbh.

Definately not a wasted life IMO, it doesnt take long.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 25/05/2012 09:12

Who is it that said "Wanna see me just come on over, wanna see my house then make an appointment"

Seriously, no one will be inside anyway and if they are they wont be looking......especially after plied with wine!

Enjoy :)

MarkGruffalo · 25/05/2012 09:13

You obv haven't seen my house Wink
Clean = not sticking to the floor

Have a lovely BBQ xx

EssexGurl · 25/05/2012 09:13

Bathroom and kitchen must be clean then I usually do a quick hoover and stuff toys into boxes and hope for the best. For your BBQ it is beautiful weather so they will all be in the garden and only interested in loo and food!

Salmotrutta · 25/05/2012 10:20

Didn't someone once say that none of us are likely to be lying on our death- beds saying "I wish I had done more housework"?

Kitchen and bathroom, quick vacuum. Tornado tidy to throw everything in any spare room/cupboard

TrickyBiscuits · 25/05/2012 10:36

"Didn't someone once say that none of us are likely to be lying on our death- beds saying "I wish I had done more housework"?"

I guess that depends on why we're on that deathbed Wink

ImHurting · 25/05/2012 10:50

I don't see mess or dirt in another peoples houses, let alone dust or crumbs. I go to my friends houses to spend time with them and see them, not to judge their house. I like houses that look lived in and where I am not scared to move in case I dislodge it's 'perfectness' Grin

Plus everyone will be outside so no one will even care Wink

Noqontrol · 25/05/2012 11:15

Grin trickybiscuits

I'd just clean the bathroom and kitchen. Maybe a quick sweep round the living room in case people come in. And shut the doors on the rest.

Hassled · 25/05/2012 11:17

Are you meant to dust picture rails then?

As long as the loo is clean and the sink isn't too manky, and as long as the kitchen surfaces look like they've seen a cloth in recent memory, and as long as the house doesn't smell of wee or poo, I wouldn't notice anything else.

IAmNotACowbag · 25/05/2012 11:22

I always ensure I've a clean kitchen and bathroom, the mess is generally shoved in a cupboard tidied away and a hoover has been pushed around. I never bother with dusting for party prep!
