to not get my friends' obsession with Cath Kidston?

Everywhere I look, bags, purses, soap, lipbalm, wall paper, curtains, table cloths and the list goes on, its like a frenzy in my group of friends ATM, what is it that is supposedly so nice?? To me most of it is a bit dated looking.

AIBU to think its a bit naff?

I LOVE Cath Kidston stuff, but like many a faffy things less is more, a couple of items can look lovely, but a room full is far too much. I have an apron and a teapot cup, just enough.

More is too busy.

Agree with MerylStop class is about moderation of nice things, not overkill. I could buy everything Gaudi/Picasso etc had ever done (if I had the cash) the affect would be cheap and nasty, too much. Class is about less being more... and knowing when more is more.

EmmaCate · 24/05/2012 21:23

A bit naff... I think YABU. But I am being subjective as I like Cath K; I just hope I have a reasonably well tuned naff-o-meter! I wouldn't describe any of the people I know who like Cath K, as naff.

But to not get your mate's obsession of course YANBU; it is pretty love or loathe in terms of style. Do dip below the surface a bit though, as not all of her stuff is covered in blossom. Some of her clothing designs in particular are classic.

Deadsouls · 24/05/2012 21:25

I Love CK!

Tangointhenight · 24/05/2012 21:27

EmmaCate I think what I meant in my sleep deprived delirium 8 month old teething) was that having the whole lot is naff...I don't mind bits and pieces someone bought me the handcream and its nice but I don't get the obsession.

Maybe Cath could design a page for NM I mean MN

Her kitchen just looks odd to me. Mixing an inorganic looking kitchen with a load of brightly coloured bits of floral plastic accessories makes it look as if she is having lunch in Munchkinland in the Wizard of Oz.

VashtiBunyan · 24/05/2012 21:30

I'm not criticising everything she makes BTW! I like bits of it and have a makeup bag set. This thread has got me looking at the website and there are some nice table cloths.

aldiwhore · 24/05/2012 21:38

I think the only thing I truly dislike is the squealing popularity her stuff now has... makes me want to NOT buy anything. Same with Boden, I hate what its become to represent and don't wish to nail my colours to that mast... though when a brochure plopped through my door I did rather like rather a lot of the overpriced stuff in there. Grr.

I bought a bag at the outlet shop but so many people have CK bags it is off putting. My mum loves CK. she's trying really hard to stop but she just can't help herself.

How about Liberty? I thought their prints were in now.

I adore the shabby chic, vintage, country-kitchen look. I would immerse myself in it, if i could. But only when pulled together in a unique way, by someone else's, since I'm not clever enough individual interpretation, generally not using Cath's stuff.

Anyone see what I did there, though, at the start?
Am clever, me

rockinhippy · 25/05/2012 07:08

YANBU. I can't believe it either. It's like the 1970s and bloody Laura Ashley all over again

Nail right on head Hackmum

We have a friend who even forked out a fortune for the tent & all the accessories - whats THAT all about Confused - prior to that I actually thought she had some taste.

I do own the odd bit, but more subtle & fits my kitchen theme, so no overkill & its not that obvious its KK

YADNBU

YANBU - wall to wall CK is unimaginative at best. However, I have the odd mug, coloured cutlery and DS has the cowboy duvet. I also have the ubiquitous blue polka dot oilcloth satchel. It's over a year old, has taken a hammering and looks immaculate. Her stuff is pricey but it lasts well. DS's duvet still looks pristine after many, many washes.

I live in an old house with lots of old dark wood furniture & second hand stuff. Not so much a style statement as being a bit tight and not really liking new things as much. A smattering of CK lifts it nicely.

FIFIBEBE · 25/05/2012 10:48

Have a very few bits - tablecloth and maybe a mug or 2. French and Saunders did a brilliant (which annoyingly I can't find) wall to wall Laura Ashley sketch years ago. Whenever I see overdone CK I inwardly chuckle. I worked for LA in the late 80s and it is all very familiar.

helloclitty · 25/05/2012 10:51

It's supposed to be nostalgic, vintage 50's-60's isn't it? Not keen myself but my DD has a bag

VashtiBunyan · 25/05/2012 11:17

sayonaragirl, I love liberty print. There aren't enough liberty print things around really.

I don't think there is a room in my house that hasn't got a Morris & Co, Laura Ashley or Liberty print item in it.

I think that is perhaps why I don't get the CK overload thing. It is nice enough but what about all of the other floral/animal/plant prints you could be mixing it with?
