Everywhere I look, bags, purses, soap, lipbalm, wall paper, curtains, table cloths and the list goes on, its like a frenzy in my group of friends ATM, what is it that is supposedly so nice?? To me most of it is a bit dated looking.

AIBU to think its a bit naff?

Ugh hate the Cath Kidston/shabby chic look. It's just so twee. People who love Cath Kidston stuff are also obsessed with cupcakes, or as I call them, BUNS!

Bloody cupcake mania. Cupcakes every-bloody-where, they can shove off and take their 'frosting' with them.

CarolynR · 24/05/2012 17:08

I hate it. Mostly because it's everywhere. I prefer things that are not wierd and unique but just not in every shop and on every product you could possibly want to buy.

MilkNoSugarAndAShotofWhisky · 24/05/2012 17:09

I love it....bot because everyone else does but because I do!!

WorriedBetty · 24/05/2012 17:12

Hello, well its everywhere! Just been into Uniqlo and they have cath K style vests.. mmm! :)

NoraHelmer · 24/05/2012 17:49

I'm with you Tango - won't have it in the house :o

Trestle · 24/05/2012 17:57

YABU, I quite like it. It's quite fresh-looking and makes a change from all the black, must try to look "hard" stuff of the moneymaking 80s and beyond.

Trestle · 24/05/2012 17:59

OK so I know home furnishings aren't always black or in other dark colours - was thinking of the chrome/black/white look.

Well you can see how dated I am.
People are typing CK and I'm thinking "what's Calvin Klein got to do with it?"

RaPaPaPumPumBootyMum · 24/05/2012 18:03

I really like CK but don't like cupcakes or baking...

I have CK bags, jewellery, keyring, travel wallet Blush

Yes, I am 38 and living a shabby chic dream and I am very bland and samey and unimaginative.

But I still like it... it's one of my favorite brands when I need a little cheer me up or I like to fancy myself as an attractive mother of two who might just live in a country cottage somewhere lovely not on a main road in a home more shabby than chic

JoannaFight · 24/05/2012 18:12

Yuk it's awful yanbu. Lets put flowers on everything to make it look girlyHmm

There was even a tent once. What a joke you'd look turning up on a campsite in a flowery tent Grin

euphrosyne · 24/05/2012 18:17

some designs are ok in my opinion
BUT
this floral vomit trend does not appeal to me because
1.it's so overpriced
2.it seems to be on pretty much anything under the sun (and beyond)

alicethepalace · 24/05/2012 19:04

CK is now part of the "walmart family".
Would people be so keen on it if it came from Asda?

Lovelynewboots · 24/05/2012 20:35

alicethepalace did not know that. I think that is a real sell out to be honest. At least a company like Emma Bridgewater keeps manufacturing jobs in this country.

DonInKillerHeels · 24/05/2012 20:38

I get why people hate it. I think most of the patterns are incredibly twee.

HOWEVER, the bags are the perfect size for whatever you want them for, and they are well made out of tough material. I am annoyed at how many CK bags I have, but they do the job for a reasonable amount of money.

gazzalw · 24/05/2012 20:55

As a man it goes totally over my head but I suspect the drip, drip, drip exposure effect gets to a lot of women in the end - it certainly did with my DW. She started off disliking it - a Laura Ashley look for the Noughties but with no originality for emulating it - but with repeated exposure over the years she has come to have a sneaking admiration for it - she even got a bag for Christmas.

But...one of her friends' teenage daughters is mega into it and that is just so unradical for teenagers - whatever happened to being an angsty teen???

Oh and wherever you go CK bags are to be spotted dangling off women's shoulders.... it is a bit of a club like Boden....do you think they overlap?? Imagine so myself...

Tangointhenight · 24/05/2012 20:56

Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticising those who do, but it just seems to me that I am the only one who doesn't go bonkers over it...they make buggy designs for mcclaren to ffs!!

I think Cath is trying to take over the world!! I like country cottage-esque stuff, just not when EVERYONE in my immediate circle has the same stuff and looks down their noses because I buy a teapot in IKEA!!!!!!!!

Every other woman in my town seems to have the oil cloth bag in slate blue with polka dots.. this isn't an exaggeration.

I think CK is fine in moderation. And some of the prints are just vile.

Those big coffee mugs she does are fab though Grin

Nyac · 24/05/2012 21:02

It's a bit ten years ago.

LynetteScavo · 24/05/2012 21:06

I was going to say CK is so yestderday, but Nyac put it so much better.

I think I will get DD a CK rucksack, for he swimming stuff, though. Kind of cute on little girls (she totally wouldn't want a flower bag, but wouldn't care that much Grin).

VashtiBunyan · 24/05/2012 21:06

Where is it that teens are into CK? I haven't noticed it here. Is it a Southern thing?

LynetteScavo · 24/05/2012 21:07

Teen round her seem to be into PB (well, the high school I pass on the way to work).

VashtiBunyan · 24/05/2012 21:09

What is PB?

LynetteScavo · 24/05/2012 21:11

www.pauls-boutique.com/

Yuk, IMO!

WheatBelly · 24/05/2012 21:16

I think it's all down to how you use her bits and pieces. A wholesale CK look is just dull but I think if you mix and match it imaginatively it can look quite fresh. I remember being surprised and very envious when I saw her kitchen on C4 - she has a very modern, minimalistic kitchen and just uses a few of her items to brighten it up Cath's Kitchen

However, I have seen some serious Cath Kidston interior overloads that make my eyes bleed - I am not into "wearing" her either!
