to call the police about children chalking swear words onto our wall

Need advice. We live in an end terrace and yesterday I noticed that someone had been chalking on our wall "Shit" and "f**ker" and "dasted" and "nob". They've also done it on the wall down the road.I asked our next door's daughter who plays out a lot (on her own - she's just turned 4 Biscuit She said it was her brother and his friend (aged about 6) . I spoke to his Mum who spoke to him. He said it was such and such a person, an older boy who lives where they used to live.So either him or his sister is lying. I am not sure if it was him or not, but it seems awfully convenient to pass the blame on to someone who lives elsewhere.
I have reported it as an incident and have an incident number, but I am not sure about asking the police to attend. The operator said they will and sometimes the presence of a policeman is enough for some kids. At least it has washed off, but I am annoyed because my kids are small (aged 1,3,5,8) and I don't want them knowing these sorts of words. Also, Mum doesn't seem too bothered about it, though I did hear Dad phoning someone asking who did it.
WWYD. Should I draw a line under it now as long as it doesn't happen again, or should I call out the police?
I envisage having to call out the police at some point for this family as since they moved in they have had a few loud parties that have gone on until 2am. I already spoke to their landlord.Should I save the police call until something more serious happens?

You only have to declare neighbour disputes, not budding 'banksy's'!

Tryharder · 23/05/2012 18:57

I suspect your 8 year old already knows those words.

It's a bit annoying, granted but the Police? Really? Y A B a bit U.

junkcollector · 23/05/2012 19:13

I must be getting old. I had to google "Dasted".

Two 6 year olds writing (correctly spelt- well done them) swear words on a wall in chalk is really NOT a police matter. I second the waterpistol idea.

It's sad how afraid we are of children in this country.

Ithinkitsjustme · 23/05/2012 19:14

If it's a one off and you've already washed it off then it seems a bit pointless to call them out now. If it recures I would take photos each time and ask the police to log it. Chalk or not it still counts as grafitti. Hopefully the family will deal with it themselves now you've said something.

MrsMuddyPuddles · 23/05/2012 19:18

You called the police about chalk on your wall but did not phone about a noisy late night party?

here, have a Biscuit

halcyondays · 23/05/2012 19:19

Yabu to call the police, it's annoying but they are only 6 and it's hardly a police matter.

designergirl · 23/05/2012 19:47

Thank you. I think I'll just draw a line under it now

I thought they were trying to spell "b*ard" I didn't realise it was a swear word in its own right!

Here. Take this. It's a grip. I think you might need one.

lovelychops · 23/05/2012 19:57

what wen said. It's chalk on a wall. seriously, let it go.

SugarBatty · 23/05/2012 20:23

When did this new swear word get invented and what does it mean?!

alistron1 · 23/05/2012 20:23

When you draw a line don't do it in chalk.

SugarBatty · 23/05/2012 20:26

Grin at alistron boom boom!

junkcollector · 23/05/2012 20:26

who knew?

SugarBatty · 23/05/2012 20:29

"Whoa that kids face is really dastard" loving the example on that link.

mynewpassion · 23/05/2012 20:37

Geezus, calling the police because of 6 year-olds chalking swear words?! So OTT its unbelievable. And do you really have to ask if YABU? Obviously!

Triggles · 23/05/2012 22:49

critique their penmanship... give them the challenge to come up with something a bit more creative... police involvement is a bit OTT...

can't imagine what drawing a line under it will do except underline it.... Grin

redpanda13 · 23/05/2012 23:16

It is chalk so wash it off.
Really impressed by the two 6 year olds spelling. They say standards are slipping in schools too! Oh and your 8 year old knows the words and your 3 and 1 year old are amazing if they can read them and ask for an explanation.

WorraLiberty · 23/05/2012 23:23

I imagine the Police had a bloody good laugh!

So this has happened once...done by a small child and you called the Police?

There seems to be a severe shortage of grips around lately.

PickledFanjoCat · 23/05/2012 23:28

Im sniggering a bit at this. Its the thought of a little 6 year old in a high viz vest cleaning Dastard and Nob off a wall.

WorraLiberty · 23/05/2012 23:32

And the Police sending a report to his Infant school, saying they'd like to hold a special assembly to point out it's spelled 'Bastard' and 'Knob' Grin

PickledFanjoCat · 23/05/2012 23:36

The army will need to be involved if he moves on to cuntz.

WorraLiberty · 23/05/2012 23:37

Aye, they'll line him up against the wall and wash him and the chalk with water cannons.

bobbledunk · 24/05/2012 00:27

yabu and a bit mental, if you call the police on six year old children for chalking your wall, expect to get a reputation as 'that crazy woman', you will not be taken seriously when something serious happens because you will rightly be presumed over reacting.

Your older children have already heard those words in the playground, that's a guarantee, people swear, children pick it up, children swear, your little darling hears it, maybe even swears themself when you're not around. If their old enough to read it, they know it already.

I would have congratulated the children for being so smart that they can spell and write on my wall, then I'd make them clean it off. No police necessary.

Softlysoftly · 24/05/2012 01:02

Dastard, I also thought it was a misspelling, the only thing that comes to mind now is "and Mutley".

You can't go around inventing new swear words what's wrong with the ones we have??

Oh and op YABU it's a tell the parents and the kids if you see them do it, not the police at this stage.
