To refuse to give ds's locker keys back to the school

shaketastic · 22/05/2012 22:29

My ds is in year 11, doing his gcse's, when he started in year 7 I paid £25 for a locker for him which was supposed to last untill he finished school,

The locker was in his form room, all good, he could leave his afternoon stuff there in the morning and collect it at afternoon registration and go back at the end of the day to collect whatever was in there, obviously other lessons were taught in that classroom during the day so he would never have access whenever he wanted but it was better than him lugging his pe stuff around all day if he didn't have it till the afternoon, and if he had pe in the morning he could leave it there till home time.

He was in that form room for a year, since then his form room has changed every year as form teachers changed and left but the lockers stayed put, he has been unable to use his locker since he finished year 7 as he is not allowed in that classroom unless he has a lesson in there, at first he tried going in early and acsessing the room before registration and at lunchtime but the room was always locked unless there was a teacher in there.

I did contact the school several times whilst he was in year 8 complaining about this but they just said that he could still access his locker at certain times but in reality he couldn't so I just left it and wrote it off,

As he has almost finished school apart from his exams I have now received a letter from the school asking for the locker keys back, I really don't want to give them back as I feel I didn't get my moneys worth as it was supposed to be for 5 years and he only got access to that locker for 1 year,

aibu to refuse to return the keys

yes of course yabu

you should have properly sorted the issue out 4 years ago.

how is stealing their key going to help?

DameHermione · 22/05/2012 22:31

Are you not just 5 years too late asking for your £25 back?

WorraLiberty · 22/05/2012 22:32

YABU to not return them. What good are they going to be to you?

On the other hand, the school were BU and should have refunded you the money.

Did you ask for a refund when he could no longer use it?

Olympia2012 · 22/05/2012 22:32

Don't you get the £25 back?

thisisyesterday · 22/05/2012 22:32

my solutions for you would be:

  1. give back the key and say nothing

  2. give back the key and complain

  3. give back the key and ask for £20 for the years he couldn't use the locker

  4. demand they make a time machine, go back in time and move the locker so he could continue to use it

5)meh

EllenParsons · 22/05/2012 22:34

YABU. How is stealing the key going to help Hmm

Catsmamma · 22/05/2012 22:34

are you going to sub let it??

hand the keys back and get over it! ....I am laughing really hard at your outrage. Sorry a little bit

manicbmc · 22/05/2012 22:35

You should have asked for the money back when he was in year 8.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 22/05/2012 22:35

YABU and very petty if you don't give the keys back. If you complained about it at the time and left it unresolved it either wasn't a big problem for your son to not have a locker or it wasn't a problem for anyone else in the class because they all managed to get to their lockers at the allocated times.

AKMD · 22/05/2012 22:37

Yes, steal the key Hmm :o

YABU but do ask for a £20 refund.

shaketastic · 22/05/2012 22:38

I did ask when he was in year 8 about getting my money back but I was told that he still had access to the locker at certain times so it was still his locker untill he left,

I do not get the £25 back,

If it's anything like the situation in my school when you combine lockers and teenagers, I'd be quite surprised if things were exactly as your DS states ...

Why didn't you complain earlier?

IloveJudgeJudy · 22/05/2012 22:38

OP, I feel your pain. It's the same at my DC's secondary school. The lockers are in classrooms, some of which are locked and a lot of the time the teachers won't let the DC in there to get their stuff. We had to pay £5 per locker and provide our own padlocks.

It's not so easy to get this kind of stuff resolved. It's such low level stuff that if you get rebuffed a couple of times you can't be bothered to sort it, compared to lots of other stuff that you sometimes have to deal with at schools.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 22/05/2012 22:40

What are the times he's allowed to go to his locker? Has he litteraly had no use of his locker for the last few years?

Limejelly · 22/05/2012 22:40

Yes OP keep the keys. That'll learn em.

Hmm
Nagoo · 22/05/2012 22:40

Not giving the keys back is pathetic. If you actually gave a shit you would have done something about this over the past 3 years.

Don't be a twat about it now.

WorraLiberty · 22/05/2012 22:41

My DS would love a locker but they don't have them in his school.

He has to trudge around most days with a huge bag, a PE kit, boot bag and violin or guitar.

shaketastic · 22/05/2012 22:42

I did complain when he was in year 8 and could no longer regualary use the locker but I was told he did have some access,

Not sure why they couldn't just move them as they aint built into the floor,

OP posts:
LineRunner · 22/05/2012 22:42

So you paid £25 for the use of a locker, as opposed to a security charge on a key? That's not right.

DeepPurple · 22/05/2012 22:42

Biscuit really? Hmm

thisisyesterday · 22/05/2012 22:43

so when it became apparent that he actually couldn't use the locker why did you not kick up a stink?
why couldn't he use the locker at the times they said he could?
why didn't you ask for the money back?

the time to sort this out has passed. you weren't worried aboutt he money 4 years ago, so why are you suddenly pissed about it now?
just give the key back

shaketastic · 22/05/2012 22:44

My son has to trudge around with a huge bag too, pe kit and everything even though I paid for a locker when he first started, He just cannot use it.

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 22/05/2012 22:44

if you keep the key are you going to insist on getting your "use" of the locker?

will you go in each morning and place somethinng in it?

thisisyesterday · 22/05/2012 22:44

OK BUT YOU'RE 4 YEARS TOO LATE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT

LineRunner · 22/05/2012 22:45

You normally pay a deposit on a key, in case it's lost.

You are saying you got charged £25 for basically renting a locker, though.
