To refuse to give ds's locker keys back to the school

My ds is in year 11, doing his gcse's, when he started in year 7 I paid £25 for a locker for him which was supposed to last untill he finished school,

The locker was in his form room, all good, he could leave his afternoon stuff there in the morning and collect it at afternoon registration and go back at the end of the day to collect whatever was in there, obviously other lessons were taught in that classroom during the day so he would never have access whenever he wanted but it was better than him lugging his pe stuff around all day if he didn't have it till the afternoon, and if he had pe in the morning he could leave it there till home time.

He was in that form room for a year, since then his form room has changed every year as form teachers changed and left but the lockers stayed put, he has been unable to use his locker since he finished year 7 as he is not allowed in that classroom unless he has a lesson in there, at first he tried going in early and acsessing the room before registration and at lunchtime but the room was always locked unless there was a teacher in there.

I did contact the school several times whilst he was in year 8 complaining about this but they just said that he could still access his locker at certain times but in reality he couldn't so I just left it and wrote it off,

As he has almost finished school apart from his exams I have now received a letter from the school asking for the locker keys back, I really don't want to give them back as I feel I didn't get my moneys worth as it was supposed to be for 5 years and he only got access to that locker for 1 year,

aibu to refuse to return the keys

NarkedPuffin · 22/05/2012 22:46

I did try to sort it 4 years ago but was told he had access when available, ie when he could get in the room, turned out that meant never as if no one was in there it was locked, if there was someone in there he wasnt to disturb a lesson,

I let it go as he didnt want to cause trouble with the school, just pissed off at the very official letter from the school asking for the keys back.

in all seriousness though

"My son has to trudge around with a huge bag too, pe kit and everything even though I paid for a locker when he first started, He just cannot use it."

yes, that is bad. that would piss me off big time.
but the fact is, you should have sorted it at the time and got them to give him an accessible locker.
he is about to leave school, you can't just turn around now and say "but it isn't fair"...
trying to teach them a lesson by not returning the key is just odd and slightly childish.

shaketastic · 22/05/2012 22:50

No havn't lost the key, my ds has one and I have the spare in case he lost his one

sorry x-posted.

so i would have pointed this out to them and demanded either a refund or a different locker. am sure it would have been easy enough for them to swap a locker with someone else or whatever.

but like i say, it's too late really to complain about it.

give the key back, be thankful he is nearly finished, and look to the future!

LineRunner · 22/05/2012 22:52

You should get your deposit back, though.

shaketastic · 22/05/2012 22:54

I am not trying to teach anyone a lesson, just pissed off that they have sent me a letter demanding the keys back for a locker I paid for expecting 5 years use of when in reality he only got one, despite several complaints the following year nothing changed'

I have no use for the keys obviously but its the principle of the thing, just pisses me off

OP posts:
shaketastic · 22/05/2012 22:55

I will post the keys to them, wont mention names, they can work that out for themselves

You could take it down the scrap metal yard

It's got be worth at least 35p

Lotkinsgonecurly · 22/05/2012 23:00

Give them the keys back and just assume the £25 went into the general pot of funding for our vastly underfunded but mainly amazing state schools. Or keep the keys and help no one.

Whatnamethistime · 22/05/2012 23:01

no lockers at all in our school

LineRunner · 22/05/2012 23:05

Send them the keys back back but ask them how they're spending the pupil premium, if you really want to piss them off.

ComposHat · 22/05/2012 23:05

Yeah, keep the key...that'll help the situation. Really mature. Why not graffiti 'the headteacher's mum does it loads and loads' on said locker to top it off?

shaketastic · 22/05/2012 23:07

lol I really couldn't give a shit about the money now, at the time it was a big expence after buying his uniform and everything,

over the last 5 years the contributions have have been constant, I have have paid them all, also had a dd at the school at the time,

It is just the somewhat shitty letter letter demanding the keys back that has pissed me of tonight, didnt need to come home to that,

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 22/05/2012 23:10

Would you rather then rang you to ask for the key back?

Or emailed maybe?

What's the problem with the letter?

shaketastic · 22/05/2012 23:14

I don't want to piss the school off, Ive been a lone parent for 15 years, my kids are 19 and 16, I've always paid anything they have asked, even if ive had to borrow it, I do have some pride.

Just feel like they have taken the piss with this as although I have complained nothing has changed and as the years went on my ds didnt want me to complain,

If they had asked my ds to return the keys I wouldnt be so annoyed but the fact they sent me an official letter has pissed me off, it states that I need to return the keys to the school.

OP posts:
NarkedPuffin · 22/05/2012 23:31

It is ridiculous. Mine have lockers in their form rooms but can only get to them when there's no lesson there, so have to lug around morning and afternoon stuff. That's bad enough. Bit late now though.

Still stuck on the locked rooms. Where do they go if it's raining at break?

Aniseeda · 22/05/2012 23:36

Buy a lockable metal box, lock the locker key in it and send it to school. When they complain that they cannot get to the key, tell them they can access it at certain times of day, all they need to do is bring it to your house and you will unlock it for them as and when they need it...

No seriously, just send the key back with a note saying you hope the next child allocated the locker gets more use out of it than your son did!

Aniseeda · 22/05/2012 23:38

Meant to say, can see why you are fed up, but it's not worth stressing over at this stage. Just send it back and be done with it.

VivaLeBeaver · 22/05/2012 23:41

No lockers here either. I'd happily pay more than £25 for one.

BackforGood · 22/05/2012 23:50

Of course YABU, and childish too.

If you felt it was a big enough issue you should have continued to persue it in Yr8 until you wore them down got the response you wanted.
To keep the key now just to make it awkward for them, suggests you are about 12 yourself!
