At what age is it OK to put a child on a zip wire alone?

(will do the AIBU bit after a few responses)

Said zip wire is approx 10m long, 1-1.5m off the ground. How old do you think a child should be before being placed on and let go?

Depends on how adventurous the child is and how they are secured.

My DCs (10 & 7) went alone on 3 zip wires totally 800m length that were 50ft off the ground but they secured with climbing harnesses.

If you're talking about a flying fox at the park (which they hold onto) then they probably hung on by themselves at about 5 or 6 years old.

bronze · 22/05/2012 21:04

What kind?
Seat or hanging?

Jubilcece · 22/05/2012 21:04

My 2 year old goes on them but with his older sister sitting behind him.

I would guess anything from 4 or 5 or 6 depending on the child.

spammertime · 22/05/2012 21:04

If it's in a park, 10m long and about 1m high then I have let my 3 year old on one alone. He's a bit of a daredevil though.

And if it's 1.5m high then that makes quite a lot of difference!

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 22/05/2012 21:05

The kind with a disk-type seat with a rope in the middle in the park.

3? Depends on the child

reddaisy · 22/05/2012 21:06

My DD who is 3 goes on a zip wire alone. She loves it! I used to run alongside her but now I don't. HTH.

TroublesomeEx · 22/05/2012 21:06

Depends on the child. About 4 I suppose. Maybe 3.

Beanbagz · 22/05/2012 21:06

Well if it's got a seat then probably 3 years old. Are we talking sedate DD or risk taking DS???

squeakytoy · 22/05/2012 21:06

1.5 meters is not really very high at all... so it would depend on the ground surface below, but I would expect a 3yo to be fine on one

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 22/05/2012 21:07

with the seat my DS did from just before he turned 4

sparkle12mar08 · 22/05/2012 21:07

From what you describe I'd have let my 3yo on something like that, and I'd probably walk alongside but not hold on to it.

wishiwasonholiday · 22/05/2012 21:07

My 2.5 year old goes on one as do my 2 year old mindees, my friends 2 year old wouldn't be sensible enough though.

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 22/05/2012 21:08

DD is 2.10. DH put her on, let her go and she totally freaked out. When I told him he was bonkers to do it he thought I was being precious. She's not particularly brave but not sensitive either, in the middle I guess, but without explaining to her what she was going to do it struck me as horribly frightening.

LiegeAndLief · 22/05/2012 21:08

We have one of these in the local park although it's a bit closer to the ground. Ds has done it from I think about 4.5yo (but didn't want to previously, I probably would have let him). Dd is nearly 3 and I run next to her. She is not very physically able and would probably just let go.

spammertime · 22/05/2012 21:08

Oh jeez, read that wrong... I was assuming seat 1/1.5m high. If its the wire then I'd let a 2 year old do it!

plantsitter · 22/05/2012 21:09

I reckon if they will and can do it they're old enough. Surely they just get a sore bum if they fall off? DD is 3 and won't go near the tings, but her friend who's 2 days younger can do it alone.

spammertime · 22/05/2012 21:09

Cross posts. It totally depends on the child! My eldest would have been terrified at 2.

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 22/05/2012 21:09

No, it is the seat, not the wire that is that high

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 22/05/2012 21:09

Had she not seen anyone else doing it? I wouldnt say she was too young to go on it, but then kids can be unpredictable about things and get spooked easily.. I wouldnt say he was being unreasonable to let her have a go on it if she had asked..

LiegeAndLief · 22/05/2012 21:09

In fact, I know she would let go, because I have caught her when she has fallen off backwards.

AThingInYourLife · 22/05/2012 21:10

DD1 has been doing those ones in the park about a metre off the ground since she was 3.
