Can't be bothered with all this Jubilee stuff. Unreasonable?

Oh god, I wish it were over. Is it meant to cheer us up, in these cash strapped times, to witness a load of over privileged, horse faced folk, being cheered and revered? We're meant to marvel at the longevity of our sovereign? Erm, why exactly? Is it really such hard work, spending a lifetime being carried about, no money worries, eating the best/having the best/...... And all those sodding holidays?

The security alone for HM tour of her people, in her Jubilee year, must be costing a fortune. "ah yes but, they bring in millions in revenue". Really? More than they cost us?

A lovely neighbour of ours is organising a little party in our cul-de-sac. I don't want to offend, but really, I don't want to go. The whole thing gets on my nerves.

All the royalists out there will flame me but, I just don't get it, at all.

I would not be offended by someone not wanting to go but I would be offended by someone there with a face and attitude like thunder.

I'm not a fan of royalty at all so the Jubilee means sweet FA to me.

DS was sent home with a cut out of a smile and asked to talk about how we should celebrate..... I left particular homework to B/F

It is about more than the Queen, it is about being British and being proud of our country and ourselves. The street parties and beacon lighting events are about our communities coming together. If you think none of these things is important or if they get on your nerves I'm sure none of your neighbours will miss you anyway. And the royals generate huge income for Britain.

we get an extra day off. For that alone, I am onboard with the whole thing :o

I do love how excitable the supermarkets and shops and ad agencies are getting with jubilee (and olympic) themed shit, and how it all seems to be very well stocked, all the time - i.e. nobody is buying it.

It's hardly going to come round in your life time again, so don't subscribe the anti-Jubilee, anti-Olympic grouching. That said, I haven't noticed anything Jubilee related! Er, when is it?

I think the celebrations are quite nice actually, it's certainly bringing our street together planning a street party. We've never really spoken to any of our neighbours before this.

I won't be attending the street party though. I won tickets to the concert so I'll be at Buckingham Palace with the over privileged, horse faced folk getting drunk on free champagne.

I've tried saying (vaguely) that we have something planned that weekend but the lady keeps collaring me, and I want to say...."actually, I think the royals are damned lucky to be who and where they are....they ought to be giving us a party" but, I'd never say with a face/attitude like thunder "no. Now leave me alone"

I'm an uber polite Virgo, myself.

Also, my son keeps bringing endless stuff from school. "Jubilee Lunch" "Jubilee Fancy Dress", bring stuff in to make your "Jubilee Hat/Crown", learn the words to the Jubilee celebration song..... "aren't we all thrilled and delighted to be a part of this Jubilee Year" Etc etc. The town is all bunting'd and there's flags all over the place and frankly, if the council had spent less on all this stuff, my son might not have lost two of his important disabled services he needs.

Just a thought.

I'm as enthusiastic about the Jubilee as I was about the Silver Jubilee in 1977. Working in a children's home, we had to drag the poor kids to loads of awful street parties, where it usually peed down with rain onto the soggy sandwiches. They all moaned that they wanted to go home and watch kung fu videos and didn't give a stuff about the Queen. I was just getting into punk at the time, so was even less keen than usual on the idea.
At least this time, I don't have to go to any street parties, might give the kung fu films a miss too this time round!

We're doing a 'garden party' at home for family and very close friends.

We're doing a Horrible Histories monarchy 'themed' thing for the children - just a glorified children's party really. And a bit tongue in cheek. With some games and food and some bunting up between the fruit trees...

I'm not a royalist, but it's part of our country, our culture and our heritage. I don't revere them, and I might disagree with a lot of what they do/don't do. But at the same time we have a royal family and it's one of the things other people like about our country and one of the reasons they visit it.

My youngest is very excited because they're doing a lot of it at school and I think it's important for them to understand Britishness and yes, currently, that includes the royal family.

I read a thread on MN recently where someone was lamenting not having a culture and not being part of a culture - this is part of our culture.

I'm not remotely interested and don't know anybody else in RL who is either. Part of me thinks it's a big load of media hype - drummed up to sell more papers and toilet rolls with the Union Jack on - which the majority of people aren't that bothered about.

And it doesn't even count as an extra day off for me - it's school half term so I'm off anyway

At least when William and whatsername got married last year they had the courtesy to make it a proper day off.

Oh and we won't be buying any union flag tat anyway.

it's my due date with DC2, so DH will have the day off - which is a real bonus IMO!!

FIL is arriving on the 2nd, and is not British (nor is DH, who is muttering about waste of public money a lot at the moment). I would LOVE to have union flag bog roll on display in the house, and just pretend it's normal :o
