To be so worried about my brother's 4 day old baby

I've just left the hospital. Baby is in intensive care on breathing aparatus and antibiotics. Doctors think he has an infection but they still haven't diagnosed after 2 days.

I am so worried and don't know how I will sleep tonight. What could be wrong?

What can I do to help? Feel helpless.

My baby was in scbu as a newborn too. He had rsv and bronchiolitis, he's fine now. It was hard to keep things ticking over at home for ds1 so if there are any more children help there would be appreciated. No one sent cards or flowers for ds2 and it would have helped if he'd been welcomed normally. Those long days in the hospital were simultaneously boring and terrifying, any kind of comfort (food, clean clothes, magazines, toiletries) helps. A small teddy for baby would be nice. I hope he's ok, in my thoughts.

Just wanted to give you all my best wishes. It's a horrible time.

My DD had Group B Strep (septicemia) as a baby and went very ill very suddenly. She was in hospital for about a week before they diagnosed what was wrong with her. Luckily they had been giving her broad spectrum antibiotics and that made her much better before the diagnosis was made. I think sometimes it takes a while to grow cultures in the lab to make a proper diagnosis and then work out what specific treatment to give for it.

Agree with everyone who has said to help with practical things - clean clothes for parents and baby, microwave meals to shove in hospital fridge etc.

Hope your nephew is better soon.
