Nothing to do with the charity, which I think is an excellent one, but jeez people in this country are soooooooo miserable.
I can understand why people for various reasons can't or don't want to give to a specific charity and I can appreciate (especially after reading some other threads on this topic and by the way yes, all you people who complain about people daring to knock on your door collecting for charity, are unreasonable and imho quite selfish) that not everyone likes to be asked on their doorstep (very nicely in my case) if they would like to donate but why do people have to be so rude and smug and downright horrible about it. It's almost as though NOT giving to charity is some kind of positive personality trait. Funnily enough the nicest, most generous ones are the little old ladies who quite possibly can least afford it.

So after spending five hours of my time, trudging through the rain and the hail and the wind in freezing temperatures after a full day at work, never again!! Rant over but jeez, another nail in the coffin, for my faith in humanity :)

Also - how dare you come on this thread and make value judgements about my charitable endeavours. You have no idea what I do or what I donate.

The reason that you are not coming back is because your views are indefensible.

it's this Ian Paisley horribly judgemental "school of Christianity" attitude that does Christian Aid and Christianity as a whole no favours at all

boo Blush - I meant [bog] in my last post. Not you! Sorry

AmberLeaf · 19/05/2012 20:25

Bog and others who have collected for CA, well done. You've done a damn sight more than many on here who would rather sit on mumsnet whining about charity collectors daring to inconvenience them, than get up off their fat arses and collect themselves

Yeah they've gone around getting other peoples money

Whereas us lot have given our own money

IAmBooyhoo · 19/05/2012 20:26

Grin i knew who you meant.

......and presumably your not watching the football under sufferance! Life is good, Boo Grin

We give to Christian Aid, even though I am a bit dubious at the 'Christian' bit. But they come round about twice a year. Its a volunteer who drops in an envelope, and a day or so later collects it with a bit of change in. They are grateful and organised.

I do resent the charity direct debit people who knock on the door and guilt trip you about a charity they are making money from. I am sometimes rude to them as they do not accept NO.

Volunteers doing whatever are different and I would not be rude to them (even the crazy religious ones!)

IAmBooyhoo · 19/05/2012 20:42

no, no football. bedknobs and broomsticks Hmm i can only cope with that because i'm MNing aswell as watching and eating chocolate. Grin

SpringHeeledJack · 19/05/2012 20:47

ooh narsty thread

think that chuggers (street ones, and the ones who come to the door asking you to set up standing orders Hmm) have put people off charity collectors- and good to remember that Christian Aid peeps collecting an envelope for one week a year (as they've been doing since I were a nipper) are volunteers, not paid workers as chuggers usually are

ffs what's wrong with saying, all smiley "thanks, but not today thank you" or "sorry, I'm a bit busy" and closing the door nicely, like I do with the Witnesses?

Politeness Costs Nothing

SpringHeeledJack · 19/05/2012 20:48

x posts with vj

agree utterly

PickledFanjoCat · 19/05/2012 20:53

Yes people should be polite don't think anyone was actively advocating seriously any rudeness or violence. Should not be called godless selfish western lucky soulless pigs for saying no or finding too much door knocking annoying though. Op & kingy really have no idea what anyone might or might not do for charity on an individual basis.

SpringHeeledJack · 19/05/2012 20:56

yeah, but that was the whole point of the op

she said that she didn't mind people not giving, it was just the rudeness she objected to

then she copped a load more rudeness on here for her trouble

I'd advise her to go and have a stiff drink and watch the telly instead

shinyblackgrape · 19/05/2012 20:58

Er....after OP was pretty rude herself.

Agree with having the stiff drink though!

Trestle · 19/05/2012 21:01

"should not be called godless selfish western lucky soulless pigs for saying no"

Has anyone said this should happen? Shock

IAmBooyhoo · 19/05/2012 21:03

springheeled apart from "get lost" OP didn't expreience any rudeness when out door to door. if her anger in the OP was based on being told to get lost then i think she is far too sensitive to be doing such a task. however i don't believe her post was anything to do with that. i think it was down to her sense of entitlement and assumption that simply because she was acting on behalf of a charity that people should be falling over themselves to give their time and money to her. like she's some effing saint.

Loshad · 19/05/2012 21:03

Have read 8 out of 9 pages but must reply to KingsHarbour, who basically illustrates very well why people don't give to christian aid - how presumptuous, judgemental and ill informed can you get Shock
I will not give to doorstep collectors, like many others we give significant amounts, (and i am most certainly not talking about £2/month) by dd to several charities of our choice, but both DH and I also give generously, and consistently with our time and expertise to our chosen charities (as does DS2) and have done so over a protracted period of time - not the OP's once yearly 5 hours - we probably each give that every 2 weeks.
Do not judge me because i dislike the attitudes of the christian church, or do not want to give to work colleagues cheap holiday (becaue they fundraising) or whatever.
I do not have to justify myself to you, but i very likely offer up far more to the charity sector than you do.

PickledFanjoCat · 19/05/2012 21:10

This is doing charity collectors no good at all this. I can't believe people collect for charity with these attitudes.

Trestle · 19/05/2012 21:12

"just choose not to support christian(ha!) charities who push the message of christianity rather than just helping"

TheTeaPig, Christian Aid is not an evangelical charity and doesn't "push" any message, except that of compassion towards our fellow humans.

SpringHeeledJack · 19/05/2012 21:16

looking through the thread the impression I got was that the op has said hardly anything at all, just that peeps have been rude to her

there's a load of posts telling her what a smug self satisfied cow she is, though, and how she wants everyone to kiss her arse for giving up a mere 5 hours of her free time for charity collection. The do-gooding beeeatch

backs up entirely what she says in the op, really

this is a pretty odd country, when you think about it- that 'do-gooder' is a term of abuse

[baffled]

Trestle · 19/05/2012 21:16

"This is doing charity collectors no good at all this. I can't believe people collect for charity with these attitudes."

PickledFanjoCat that's the thing with volunteering for charity collections though - no wages to pay, but volunteers do not need any specific attributes or skills to do the work. It's usually each church asking who's willing to do a round - and people just sign up.
