about banana purchasing behaviour

or is this bloke - obviously i think he is
In sainsbos tonight, getting a couple of bunches of bananas and this bloke is checking every bunch, and pullling the best banana off each bunch, then sometimes replacing those on the shelf in favour of another, then picking the ends of the stems (approx 1mm presumably to save cashHmm) He had about 6/7 altogether inhis trolley.
His trolley was stuffed with luxury foodstuffs so presume not down to last 5p
Surely if you buy bananas you get a bunch and accept that some might be better than others, or am i the fool and should i be shredding bunches?

YANBU. He was a naughty monkey Grin.

CrispyCod · 18/05/2012 22:04

I'm a bunch shredder unless they come pre-packed!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 18/05/2012 22:05

Bizarre behaviour. I might try it with grapes!

hazeyjane · 18/05/2012 22:06

I take the best bananas off the bunch, and pick bad grapes out of the bag.

workshy · 18/05/2012 22:06

I bunch shred getting a variety of shades from dark yellow to bright green so they last longer Grin

exexpat · 18/05/2012 22:06

HWBU. If there's one badly bruised banana on a bunch, then I think it would be fair enough to pull it off and leave it. But cherry-picking (banana-picking?) one or two from each bunch and quite probably bruising the rest in the process is a bit off.

Did you tut at him? I think I might have...

Oakmaiden · 18/05/2012 22:07

The real problem with people doing this is they are generally not careful enough - and bananas get damaged really easily. You should ideally avoid handling the fruit at all, and just handle the stem - which you can't do when you are pulling them off the bunch.

So YANBU as he was damaging the fruit other people would end up buying, unaware that he had had his hands all over it.

EmmaCate · 18/05/2012 22:07

Laughing at idea of a toddler having a tantrum in the aisle and being given a 'sainsbo'.

Bloke sounds like a nutter; YANBU.

Loshad · 18/05/2012 22:08

no i gave him a short sideways glare and hurumphed on my way Grin

Maybe he has heard those stories about big hairy spiders smuggling themselves over with the bananas and likes to thoroughly check them over before taking them home

or he's nuts

NinthWave · 18/05/2012 22:10

Maybe he's got a hot date and they're display bananas. He's just going to arrange them artfully in a bowl on his granite-topped kitchen island. Or something.

DumSpiroSpero · 18/05/2012 22:11

'Tis weird, but perhaps he was cooking a special meal and needed particularly ripe/unripe/evenly matched bananas?

muminthecity · 18/05/2012 22:13

I take the whole bunch, I'd feel bad separating one from its banana family, and doubly bad if I took the bunch but left one poor little bruised banana by himself without any of his banana friends or family Sad

NinthWave · 18/05/2012 22:15

muminthecity I must live in a town with a large number of bunch shredders, as my local supermarket's shelves are often bare except for scratty brown/green runty ones Sad

Maisieskates · 18/05/2012 22:16

I was buying broccoli in the supermarket once and saw someone breaking the stalk off before putting some in their basket - I thought it was odd. Then I got home and cut my stalk off - which I had paid for but don't eat - and put remaining broccoli in the fridge. I decided they had the right idea and next time tried to break off the unwanted stalk - am obviously a weakling as no matter how hard I tried I couldn't and probably looked like a right nutter Blush.

Dancergirl · 18/05/2012 22:16

Loshad · 18/05/2012 22:18

Broccoli stems are edible though?

CaptainKirk · 18/05/2012 22:19

I am very, VERY fussy about bananas and sometimes spend 10 or 15 minutes scrutinising every bunch to get the best one but I've never done that before.

Springforward · 18/05/2012 22:20

I've always wondered how so many bananas end up getting left alone on the shelf (I am a bunch-buyer and buy one green and one yellow bunch for the week) - that explains it, OP.

androbbob · 18/05/2012 22:20

Very odd! But then again I may well be as I collect the single lonely bananas and would never separate two bananas to take one and leave on!

Maisieskates · 18/05/2012 22:22

Agree Badkitten that broccoli stems are edible- but I hate them so don't want to buy them. Guess I need to shop alongside a broccoli stem lover Smile.

harbingerofdoom · 18/05/2012 22:24

Always discard the black/bruised bananas from a bunch. Why should I buy damaged goods?
Broccoli, when sold by weight,if it's the branching type I won't touch them but sometimes (at the same price) there can be 3 inches or more of stalk. Not tried breaking them (have seen it done) but have a nifty knife.

out2lunch · 18/05/2012 22:24

i get the lonely ones too

also i spend a lot of time looking at big oranges for the best ones
