To think £10 of petrol should turn the petrol light off fgs.

I can't believe it. I only put £10 in because it was expensive, thinking that would do until I got to the supermarket petrol station which was a fair bit cheaper.

I remember routinely putting a fiver in my old Corsa AND not having to fill up again for a week! (have only been driving 10 years so not THAT long ago)

Last time I filled up I put £40 in the tank which took me to just over half full and I have a normal family sized car these days.

I am on mat leave so obviously not as well off as when I'm working and have found myself thinking seriously about whether I 'need' to take the car out.

I like to visit my housebound and disabled gran every week at the other end of town for a few hours to cheer her up with baby DS and have calculated that it costs at least a fiver just to pop there and back. I haven't let it stop me going as it's important (and crucially not her fault that petrol's extortionate) BUT it does make me cross that it's so blood expensive for a short jaunt out that I would gave previously made without thinking twice. Grrrrrr!

My favourite memory is of a local supermarket price war about......12/15 years ago when it was down to 53p a litre!

Now it takes £60 to fill my Fiesta, I used to be able to fill my Toyota Previa (HUGE people carrier for those not in the know) on £60 :(

I had a Zafira when that I could fill for forty quid, years ago.
I have an old lady car now, it costs £58 quid to fill it. When we first moved here from London, petrol was 67pence a litre. That was 15 years ago.

I remember when £10 of 4* would half fill the tank of my first car!

I had a loan car the other day whilst mine was being serviced. A notice on dashboard said replace petrol used, fair enough. Also don't bring back with light on else we'll charge you £10.

Fucking light went on as I leftbthe forecourt. I only travelled home-5min journey. I put petrol in £10 light still on, another £5 light still on! Told them I really wasn't putting more in. should have let them charge me the tenner :(

YANBU.

I rarely put more than £30 a time in my car, and if I've put that in before the light has been on for ages and the tank gets half full, my car thinks its Christmas!

Basically yes - it's a three litre BMW 5 series estate! Husband's car, not mine - I don't actually drive. Usually takes about £90 every 2-3 weeks.

It cost me £80 to fill my car yesterday, and that was with a 5p off per litre voucher!

I only ever put £10-15 in at a time. Just enough to last me a few days until I have more income.

For all of you who constantly run their cars on almost empty, dont. It really is not good for the car and will damage the fuel pump, which can be very costly to replace!

That happened to me just last month!The fuel pump broke from leaving the petrol run down. Cost me ?300 to have it mended. Be warned

I know - it's hideous how much fuel is now. I've been driving almost 20 years, and I remember when petrol was about 75p a litre (4*). My first car - a Metro - cost about £25 to fill. Now I drive an Astra, so not a big car, but it takes about £70 to fill it from empty, and I have to do that every 3-4 days, as I have a 100 mile round trip to work. :( Sobs.....

Try to keep your tank filled up I.e over half a tank it does save money. I put in £10-15 per week now as apposed to £95-100 per month 1.6 zafira

Can't even bring myself to type in how much it costs to fill my car, but it is a third more than even the highest amount listed so far. Due to job travelling around visiting clients it has to be filled every week.

I don't know, but it works for me. And also a mechanic I know. Hth

YANBU, the cheapest petrol I've found locally is £1.49 per litre, I hate filling up the car!

My first car was a proper mini.

£7.50 filled it and did me two weeks.

145.9ltr in my local small town with 2 petrol stations, 138.5ltr in the larger town I was visiting 20 miles away yesterday. How can the same supermarket have such a large price difference in a distance of 20 miles!

I am assuming that this is not a competition, but I think I win!
My fuel costs were becoming ridiculous. I drive a Discovery (5 kids between me and DP) and school run is 17 miles each way.
I managed to get through £200 of diesel in a week and was horrified.
DP then used the car and noticed diesel pouring out underneath. The fuel pipe had split.
A £20 repair job later and the car became significantly more efficient! I think we had wasted several hundred pounds worth of fuel.
