To think that these songs were really bad choices for our Brownie kareoke night?

Maybe IABU or just a massive mouldy cow.

The younger leaders organised a 'Diva Party' for the Brownies and with kareoke chose 'Hollerback Girl' (clean version, but still, interesting take home message for 7 year olds), Hit Me Baby One More Time and Barbie Girl.

I think I came across as cats bum mouth, as all the girls were having a fab time, but those songs strike me as hugely creepy for little girls to be singing to. I wondered what the parents would think as well.

Would you be happy with these songs?

eurgh

sharklet · 16/05/2012 19:05

No I'd not be too happy either. We had an event the other day in school and they (7 yr olds) were dancing to "I'm Sexy and I know it" not sure who by.

thebody · 16/05/2012 19:06

Defiantly see your point but I suppose if it was diva night? Still could be worse I suppose !!

PoppadumPreach · 16/05/2012 19:07

naming it a "Diva party" is bad enough in itself.

manicbmc · 16/05/2012 19:07

My next door neighbour's 3 yr old dd used to sing Barbie Girl - she did the 'come on Barbie, let's go party' voice as well. Grin

They are just songs and the chances are the kids will have no idea of the meaning anyway.

1950sHousewife · 16/05/2012 19:08

Sharklet - that's one of the huge ones as well for my DD and her friends to sing to. I get a bit of sick in my mouth when I hear them singing it.

And Brownies is having a massive campaign about the sexualisation of children in the media...
Problem is, the junior leaders are in their 18-21s so I probably came across as a harpy.

Hmmm, I it is tricky isn't it. It sounds like it was always on the downhill being a Diva Party! I remember our local brownie group, before we moved to the states, asked me to come in and teach make-up to the girls. (I am an Make-Up Artist and Bodypainter) I felt really uncomfortable about it, and in the end gave them two options. I would teach them good skin care routines, or I would teach them some fun facepainting looks.

Herein the states I am completely horrified by how sexualised kids are, the clothes they wear to school they way they speak, the music they listen to. There was an 8 year old this morning as I dropped DD to school who was wearing 3 inch peep toe wedges. I ask you!!!

1950sHousewife · 16/05/2012 21:16

I hated the name Diva party as well.
In many ways, the whole thing went against everything I'd like the brownies to be about - it was about dressing glam, eating blue ice cream with gummy worms and dancing to songs that were a little gross.

And I'm not even that puritanical strangely. My DD listens to One Direction and Lady Gaga and I let her watch Grease (apparently a mum sin according to some friends). I just wondered about the wisdom of this being at brownies which I would love to be still a bit throwbacky - getting muddy, singing embarassing songs about worms and eating bananas cooked on campfires.

I liked your ideas for the 'make up lessons'.

And those platform shoes sound a treat... Grin

I dont think thaTS THE ethos of brownies I know i m sounding arsey I wouldnt like a Diva party for 7 yr olds , dd did a pamper night in guides thats a bit older they made face masks and learned how to do hand massages , which was lovely it was a fundraiser,

simperingsally · 16/05/2012 21:30

I was about 7-8 when im a barbie girl came out and it was huge! used to sing it all the time and so did my friends, had no idea there was anything adult about it and the tune of the song is very childlike.

Agree that they were a bit inapropriate but i doubt the kids are going to look any further into the lyrics of the songs.

my 3 yo dd really like 'im sexy and i know it'
she does not know what sexy or anything that it means
she just likes the tune and likes to jiggle about the kitchen when its on the radio.

confusedpixie · 16/05/2012 21:35

Hollerback girl, YANBU. But the other two? They both came out when I was a kid, I was obsessed by Aqua and Britney, I see no harm in them because of that iyswim?

LynetteScavo · 16/05/2012 21:35

Well, if you send your DD to a "Diva Party", what do you expect? Confused

Annunziata · 16/05/2012 21:35

YANBU. Creepy, creepy, creepy. It's such a pity that there isn't much popular music that isn't in some way.

tunafortea · 16/05/2012 21:36

Blee.
I wouldn't like it.
Sad
Try Beavers (unisex) - they don't do that crap!

confusedpixie · 16/05/2012 21:37

Oh, and Diva Party? Bleugh. Good way to stereotype them young Hmm

1950sHousewife · 16/05/2012 21:39

Lynette - I agree with the name totally. (BTW - I'm one of the brownie leaders, but the guides had organised this with their leaders and so it was a surprise for the brownies.)

I know I'm IABU a bit unreasonable about Barbie Girl and Hit me baby, my DD loves those too - I just would have loved a bit more in the way of positive songs.

"I'm Sexy and I Know It" is the new "My DingaLing" or "I'm too Sexy (for my shirt)". The band is LMFAO, and this song (and its dance) went round most primary school playgrounds recently, as Justin Bieber performed with them.

There's an Alvin and the Chipmunks version too.

1950sHousewife · 16/05/2012 21:42

BTW- I'm not a total killjoy - I loved FGTH when I was younger which probably had my parents eyes bugging out as well. But at brownies I'd prefer them to stick to songs about nicey things.

OP posts:
Annunziata · 16/05/2012 21:44

You could organise a 'let girls be girls' party in response?

1950sHousewife · 16/05/2012 21:46

Annunziata - you're right, good idea. In fact, we do do discussions and stuff about body image etc (it's not just about knotting anymore, innit) and we are taking them on camp this summer for a week so hopefully plenty of opportunity to let them get messy, build campfires and look like they've been dragged through a hedge backwards.

ABatInBunkFive · 16/05/2012 21:48

yy - I'd be cross if my dd came home from brownies telling me this had happened, it's not why she goes to them at all.

Moshlingmummy · 16/05/2012 21:48

Problem is it's really hard to find suitable songs for that age group - once you start reading the lyrics you realise how bad some of the words are.

Annunziata · 16/05/2012 21:49

That sounds great fun.

ABatInBunkFive · 16/05/2012 21:50

bugger all wrong with koom-bye-ah or boomchickaboom. Wink

Queenofcake · 16/05/2012 21:50

Blimey! Brownies has change since I was one. It used to be all about singing songs and dancing around a papermache mushroom, tieing knots, polishing the church brass, cooking sausages on camp fires, making trails using twigs to make arrows, singing Christmas carols at the old peoples home at the same time as doing our "hostess" badge which involved prepapring atray with a pot of tea, cup and saucer, slice of cake and a carnation in a little vase!

Tut!!
