To think that these songs were really bad choices for our Brownie kareoke night?

Maybe IABU or just a massive mouldy cow.

The younger leaders organised a 'Diva Party' for the Brownies and with kareoke chose 'Hollerback Girl' (clean version, but still, interesting take home message for 7 year olds), Hit Me Baby One More Time and Barbie Girl.

I think I came across as cats bum mouth, as all the girls were having a fab time, but those songs strike me as hugely creepy for little girls to be singing to. I wondered what the parents would think as well.

Would you be happy with these songs?

Omg, red men!

I haven't heard that in years... Given that we have a huge first nations community here, I might not reintroduce it!!

Wilson, you are absolutely right. Leg in the air. I know you are right, but have absolutely no idea why that action... Bizarre!

I loved cadets. My sister flew solo in a powered glider before she was even old enough to learn to drive. It blows your mind, really.

Madwoman - I have a funny feeling Red Men is a song that has been quietly banned!! I also heard that 'The Good Ship Titanic' was also banned. Lyrics such as 'Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives...lalala...glub glub glub' have obviously struck a bad chord with the modern world.

Can't work out why Grin

But they are still singing Red Men at my DDs Brownies, so it can't have been officially banned? The girls love singing it and doing all the actions. I don't think they even register what the words are about.

What about 'When I first came to this Land'- that's not very PC- call your wife run for your life, call your daughter fetch some water. My girls think it is hilarious.

madwomanintheattic · 17/05/2012 22:23

Actually, that is kinda funny. I mean, it could so easily have been a parent starting a thread 'my dd has been singing these dreadfully inappropriate songs at brownies....' oh, wait! Grin

Ours like 'my ship sailed from china.'

It gives a real glimpse into the heritage, looking at traditional songs!

OMg, really?! I dont remember this one! :o

madwomanintheattic · 18/05/2012 00:23

!

Nooooooo. Can't say that I do.

She'll be wearing pink pyjamas when she comes, yes. Nothing on at all? No.

bogeyface · 18/05/2012 00:27

It was the "thats when you want to see me" bit that got me!

One written by LBP perhaps Wink

tumbleweedblowing · 18/05/2012 00:27

That's so totally not why my DDs go to Brownies. If they did that, it would be the last time they went, and the district commissioner would know why.

Thing is, the 'traditional' songs that you want your kids to sing now were the contemporary pop songs of howevermany years ago. And often had fairly smutty connotations at the time. I don't actually think there's anything wrong with kids singing vaguely risque pop songs that they don't really understand or think about the words of, from time to time.

talkingnonsense · 19/05/2012 08:49

We used to sing all of us are red men.... Surely that's not appropriate these days?!
However it sounds like the guides organised it for the brownies, so I don't think they would think about the song lyrics- hopefully they are still quite naive themselves.

pantaloons · 19/05/2012 09:04

At Brownies we used to sing.....
I wear my pink pyjamas in the summer when it's hot.
I wear my flannel nightie in the winter when it's not,
And sometimes in the spring time and sometimes in the fall...
I jump into my little bed with nothing on at all.
That's the time when you should seeeeee meeee, that's the time when you should seee meee...
That's the time when you should see mee.
When I jump into my little bed with nothing on at all!

It was complete with actions and a real crowd pleaser. Can't see it being hugely popular now!

The Guide songs were also close to the bone especiallythe Brasso one.

Sadly, I think you'd do well to find many pop songs without any conotations or bleeps in, it's a shame really.
