Yes, IABU to link to DM...

Here

I don't know, the way it's written and set out, the way it's presented makes it look like it's the alleged victim's fault for being drunk.

The Daily Mail have a deliberate policy of writing inflamatory pieces which will make lots of people angry and thus make them post about it on mumsnet, facebook, twitter etc - this drives traffic to their website and therefore drives up their advertising revenue. By posting this here, you have done more for their profit margin than you would have done by buying the paper for a week.

Everyone should install this app on their browser, which diverts you away from the Daily Mail website and stops you contributing to their continued profitability.

Debeez · 16/05/2012 07:48

Plus every time we click they make more money. Cos then sponsors know the pages have high traffic and pay them more. Angry

StealthPolarBear · 16/05/2012 07:49

So Tje article could ave been man accused of rape admits lying to police? Why not that?
I warmed to them slightly after their ched Evans coverage but see they're back to women hating and victim blaming. Business as usual

Debeez · 16/05/2012 07:50

X-Post Sorry xkcdfangirl.

complexnumber · 16/05/2012 07:56

"it's the daily mail
they hate women"

And yet it's the only paper with a higher female readership than male! (So I believe)

What's that all about?

ChrissasMissis · 16/05/2012 08:06

Has anyone else noticed that the DM includes it's cookery articles in the Femail section? How enlightened.

CallMeAl · 16/05/2012 08:12

of course its horrible, look what paper its in.

STOP READING THIS HORSESHIT, THIS IS WHY ITS POPULAR.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 16/05/2012 08:20

complexnumber, that's actually a really good question and it would be interesting to ask over in the feminist section and see what ideas come up.

I haven't clicked through to the article above but I assume from the headline it's a charming piece of rape victim blaming? But you can see from rape threads on here that victim blaming and rape myths are quite popular among women...

What else do they do... bitch about female celeb's bodies, and alternately bash SAHM and WOHM. Again, threads that aren't uncommon on here!

Yellowtip · 16/05/2012 08:27

I'm no fan of the DM but tbh this is only a report of the evidence given on a particular day of the trial. The defendant's barrister is cross-examining and so the questions are bound to be like this. At the moment the defendant is presumed innocent. These are legitimate questions to ask I'd have thought, in the circumstances, if you look at the evidence he's asking questions about.

TattyDevine · 16/05/2012 09:05

Agree with what Yellowtip said. He is, at this point, innocent until proven guilty. If he did rape her, then its awful to think that the fact that she was drunk or went into a car willingly or any of those factors were relevant - in fact, the fact that he's a rapist is the only thing to "blame".

However, if he has been accused of rape simply because her husband caught them at consensual sex, well, that is simply dreadful for the man - imagine if it were you father or something - lets not assume he's a rapist at this point. And if he is, lets hope there is some evidence that will prove it beyond all reasonable doubt and whatever his brief can come up with and send him down.

TattyDevine · 16/05/2012 09:06

The fact that he said he couldn't get it up to police but then admitted he did is a bit suss though.

CeliaFate · 16/05/2012 09:07

I know exactly what story you're referring to, without clicking on the link. I wanted to slap the "journalist" across the face with his rag and yell "YOU'VE CAPITALISED THE WRONG WORD, YOU TWAT." Angry

AKissIsNotAContract · 16/05/2012 09:11

this is a couple of years old now but still very relevant.

TheQueenOfSheba · 16/05/2012 09:12

it's the daily mail
they hate women

Yes, especially fat ones, thin ones and ones who do IVF.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 16/05/2012 09:20

It always astounds me how everyone on mumsnet claims to hate the dm, yet it is continually being linked to! I formed my own opinion on what a ridiculous paper it was when I read it a couple of times at my mum's house (I have told her to stop buying it) and have had no inclination to read it since, but have read more of the dm than I have ever done in the rest of my life since being on mn and reading links to disgraceful articles that mnetters are raging about! Surely they will keep publishing this crap if we all then "advertise" their paper moaning about it? I'm not going to read the article because I'm voting with my feet as it were. You are probably nbu, and I agree that the paper is vile, so why does everyone insist on reading it?! Smile

AKissIsNotAContract · 16/05/2012 09:24

Every time we click the links the DM makes money.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 16/05/2012 09:27

Well sorry couldn't resist reading it, and you are right. It is vile. I believe her. The fact that she was so drunk shouldn't be used as part of the defence, but part of the prosecution. It is not a crime to get drunk, but it is a crime to force sex on someone who is unable to give consent. Poor woman.

quirrelquarrel · 16/05/2012 09:29

They don't hate women, they are successful because people think they hate women.

What's the point of trotting out that kind of thing- serves no use.

Popoozle · 16/05/2012 09:30

YABU for reading the Daily Mail.

YANBU for thinking this is a horrible article.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 16/05/2012 09:58

quirrelquarrel "They don't hate women, they are successful because people think they hate women."

Eh? How would that converstaion go, then?

"I'm getting a bit bored with the Times, darling, shall we try the Mail?"
"Hmmm... what makes the Mail better?"
"Well, they really hate women. Fat ones, thin ones, SAHMs, WOHMs, celebrities, rape victims... you name it!"
"Sounds fantastic, let's buy it tomorrow!"

Yellowtip · 16/05/2012 10:50

Apologies for getting into specifics but I'm not sure the barrister was focussing on how much she drank as much as questioning the fact that her pants were off and in the back of the car.

I hope I haven't got that wrong.

Lovelynewboots · 16/05/2012 11:03

Of course this is a shoddy piece of reporting. But it has been written for a reason and I can predict how the course of this thread is going to go as we are all now the puppets of the Daily Mail. I would suggest no-one clicks on to it and I add a Biscuit. Best of intentions OP but slightly misguided.

thekidsrule · 16/05/2012 11:57

i love reading the mail online, probably look twice a day

but i agree MN always bitches about it but plenty seem to look at it on a regular basis then say they hate it,whats that about, atleast i will admit it

its a popular on line paper so someones reading this

if anybody hates it that much you just dont read it surely,i will never read the sun or sport so never click on the sun site (have no idea if the sport has a site, lol)
