Don't know about anyone else, but when I go food shopping I want to get my stuff through he checkout as quickly as possible & I don't want to be held up by the assistant asking inane question such as "so, any plans for the weekend"? "yeah, none of your damn business!" I wouldn't mind so much if it didn't mean them slowin down how quickly they scan the items. Anyone else get really annoyed by this??! Grrr!!!

Do an online shop and stay away from normal people then. "Grr" indeed. Hmm

Lac365 · 13/05/2012 17:46

I worked for a short whilst in M&S and they made us chat with the customers. I hated it and left.

It drives me mad too when I'm in a rush (and grumpy). Really don't want to chat!

Salmotrutta · 13/05/2012 17:46

Poor shop assistants - they can't win!

They are told to talk to people, it's part of their mystery shop scoring

ThePopsicleKat · 13/05/2012 17:49

You sound like a charmer.

Did you go to charm school?

Was it closed?

JustFab · 13/05/2012 17:54

Talking to you is fine but they also need to learn when the customer doesn't want to chat and shut up accordingly.

MrsFruitcake · 13/05/2012 17:55

YABVU.

That's called being polite and friendly.

FFS why all the threads recently about sales assistants!!! I don't go round slagging off people who are shit at their jobs who work in offices. Just lay off us Sales Assistants.

Salmotrutta · 13/05/2012 18:00

I like a wee chat at the till ... manners cost nothing and all that.

MaargeritaPracatan · 13/05/2012 18:05

Rotten customers are often compensating for a lack of something good in thier lives, it empowers them. A good old shag might help some.

YABVU. I can't stand sullen people who don't look you in the eye and barely grunt any necessary communication. Give me a friendly chatty checkout person any day.

applecrumple · 13/05/2012 18:15

Can I just say, for the record, that I have worked as sales and checkout assistants & I was polite and friendly, but didn't push the conversation if the customer clearly didn't want to chat. There is a happy medium - you can be polite and friendly by saying "hello, sorry to keep you waiting", "would you like help packing" etc, without launching into a full blown conversation if it's not wanted.

I find any excess chat quite stressful and annoying and don't understand the obsession with smalltalk.
