To tell DD1 to stop growing?

She's 11 and needed new jeans. So we went shopping, and nothing in the child sizes fit. I shouldn't have been surprised/annoyed - she's nearly 5'1'' and developing, but the only thing she fit into was Next's petite adult range - size 6 was a brilliant fit with some growing room height wise. Great, but cost £50 for 2 pairs of jeans.

Aaaaaaargh!

YANBU how bloody dare she grow

Have you been feeding her though? If you have, you've only yourself to blame.

gafhyb · 12/05/2012 17:41

Hate to break it to you, but if she's a size 6, then she's really a size 8 (Next Vanity Sizing). It's worse than you thought. She practically a woman

pointythings · 12/05/2012 17:43

I know, Camera but if I don't feed her she gets horribly grumpy and gets in the way of me MNing complains a lot.

Worst thing is - I can't pass these lovely jeans (and they are) down to DD2 because she is the skinniest minny in the world. The skinnies passed down from DD1 are straight legs on her, she will drown in these when she hits 5'1''.

She's unreasonable in other ways too - she likes cuddles and being read to, and the other day she did the dishes! I mean, what is the world coming to?

Should I tell her to change shape so she fits into less upmarket cloths?

pointythings · 12/05/2012 17:44

I know, gafhyb. And to make it worse, she's grown half an inch in the last month. I have no chance, do I? (I'm 5'11''). She does need a belt on the size sixes, they are very much not snug on her.

I tell my DD all the time to stop growing but she is having none of it

my niece obviously didn't listen to my sister either as she is 13 and 5ft 10!!!

perhaps they have all been sneaking some of george's marvellous medicine?

Tee2072 · 12/05/2012 17:51

If you find a way to get that to work, let me know.

My son, at 2.11, is 36.5 inches tall.

I, however, am only 62.5 inches tall.

That's right, not quite 3 and over half my height...

ClassFree · 12/05/2012 20:50

My DD is 6 foot, half inch, and is still growing. She is very slender, so finding clothes that fit well, and are age appropriate, can be a pain. She wears a 10/11 shoe, and has very narrow feet, so shoe shopping can also get tricky.
And bloody expensive!

I think it was all the fresh air and sunshine!
or those damn baby massage classes we did to help stimulate bone growth

Saltire · 12/05/2012 20:54

5ft 1 - is that all Grin. DS1 is 14 and talle than DH and I - he's over 6ft now. He has a 34 waist, but as I discovered yesterday, his 33" inside leg measurment has grown too!

DS2 is 12 and wears age 16/small man clothing.

They are costing me a fortune

MsKittyFane · 12/05/2012 21:29

DD is nearly 9 and has size 10 petite fit clothes from Next.
She is very tall compared to her classmates, (her height is comparable to a 12/13 year old.) very few chidren's clothes fit. Too short and too narrow. Yes, it costs a fortune!

TruthSweet · 12/05/2012 23:38

OP you have my sympathies and I will be feeling your pain in a few years as DD1 & DD2 are both very tall.

DD1 is just 6y and the size of a 7-8 year old (is growing out of 7-8 tights as they are too short) but is skinny enough she can wear her baby sister's 9-12m/12-18m leggings as cycling shorts. DD3 is 2y 7m and was wearing a 3-6m skirt (with integral knickers and she's still in nappies) yesterday (she's short and skinny) Hmm - she's my mini one!

DD2 is 4y 6m and is still at playschool. She is taller than some of DD1's Y1 classmates even some of the ones who are 2y+ older than her Confused. She can wear DD3's leggings as crops as she is also skinny but wore a 6-7y top to playschool the other day - it's getting a bit short though!

I wish they did children's clothes by height AND by chest/waist as you can have children that are tall & skinny, tall & broad, tall & avg, avg & skinny, avg & broad, avg & avg, small & skinny, etc and all those children could be 5y old so it would be great to able to choose XXcm tall and Xcm, Ycm or Zcm chest.

It doesn't make sense to bracket all children by age or just by height. All adults aren't 5' 4" and a size 12 so why should all children be Xcm tall and have an Xcm chest at each age?

Goofymum · 12/05/2012 23:48

ClassFree how old is your DD? I'm only wondering because my DD1 is 6 and is already 130cm tall, in age 9 clothes and has size 2 feet. When I got her feet measured recently I thought blimey, how big are her feet going to be as an adult? My DH is very tall so I'm not surprised but I do get concerned at her growth rate sometimes!
TruthSweet tights are always a nightmare. They always shrink after 1 wash too. For my 6 year old mentioned above I always go for age 10 tights now.

Timeformeplease · 13/05/2012 00:08

You have my sympathy too, pointythings! At least you found something to fit your dd though. My dd is also 11 but very slim with no curves yet, even age 12 clothes are too wide/curvy and yet not long enough, petite six 6 are way too wide! She has two pairs of denim shorts and that is all for clothes outside of school. It is a nightmare.
My only plan is to feed her lots of cake and not take her shopping again until she puts on a few pounds Wink!

Brightspark1 · 13/05/2012 00:14

Don't worry, they do stop eventually. DS is 19'and has stopped growing, only thing is, he is 6'5 and size 13 feet.

ClassFree · 13/05/2012 00:18

Goofymum she has just turned 15. We thought she had stopped growing last year, but over the last 2 months, she has entered another growth spurt.
The poor thing is getting aches and pains and is often tired, but I am sure it must be close to finishing....

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 13/05/2012 00:36

OP, my DD is a similar height to your DD and wears a size 6; she gets her jeans in primark, they are £9 per pair and fit perfectly.

manicbmc · 13/05/2012 01:08

I told my dd to stop growing and she did. Grin

As she is still growing, buy her cheap adult sizes.

startail · 13/05/2012 02:38

YANBU

DD1(14) is a size 10-12 and has needed adult size clothes for 3 years.

It's stupidly expensive.

Two pairs of school trousers for DD1 £50
(ok nice M&S trousers like we'd wear to the office and they do last)

DD2, Two pairs of age 11 trousers £12-16

And to add insult to injury she's taller than me (I can wear kids shoes easily, she a six so just can, but I bet it won't last).

startail · 13/05/2012 02:41

I'll always remember my DLMIL, who was about 5'1" looking up at my 6 ft DH and wondering out loud where her little boy had gone.

Hatechoosingnickname · 13/05/2012 07:17

I blame the parenting personally, my PFB has stopped growing at 5'2.25" (she tells me the quarter is crucial) with size 2 feet. Children's shoes for the rest of her life - perfect!!!

My ds on the other hand takes after his bloody father and doesn't listen to me at all, and grew 3 shoe sizes in 1 week. And now at the grand old age of 6 is in adult shoes!!!

Ireallyneedanewname · 13/05/2012 07:35

My Dds have size 9 feet - they are 13 and 15!

bigTillyMint · 13/05/2012 07:37

DS's bf has size 9 1/2 feet. He is 11Shock

marriedinwhite · 13/05/2012 08:44

My dd is 14 and like yours was wearing Next clothes at 11. She grew like topsy in Y5 and Y6. And then she stopped, she's trimmed down weight wise and grown only a couple of inches since - she's quite dinky now. She's still wearing most of the stuff she had at 11 except now she needs a belt. Her feet haven't grown for over a year. She's had her last pair of school shoes for five terms - I'm desperate for something to snap - they still have growing room and look awful!!

ChunkyPickle · 13/05/2012 09:02

So where does sell the longest/skinniest clothes? DS is nearly 2, and I have the choice of long enough, but room for a second boy widthways, or sleeves and trouser-legs so short he looks like something from Oliver twist..

Gap Skinny pyjamas I can recommend - they're ridiculously skinny - his 2T ones are almost snug even on him!

bejeezus · 13/05/2012 09:09

my dd1 is 6yo and is just out-growing her age 10-11yr old clothes Shock
her feet are size 3

bejeezus · 13/05/2012 09:11

yeah-belts, belts and more belts
