to wonder what people DO to their clothes

to supposedly have them "fall apart" after an arbitrary amount of time?

Referring, of course, to the frequently heard "I'd rather pay £1000 for a plain white Armani t-shirt which will last years instead of £10 for an H&M one which will fall apart after a month!"

I mostly wear Primark, H&M etc and I have yet to have an item of clothing fall apart/rip/spontaneously combust in front of me. Grin I swear most of the designer stuff comes from the same sweatshops...

OP posts:
Janoschi · 12/05/2012 00:17

Captain Kirk's clothes fell apart fairly regularly. Were Starfleet uniforms made by H&M?

Kayano · 12/05/2012 00:18

Yanbu op

BBQJuly · 12/05/2012 00:19

:o

AgentZigzag · 12/05/2012 00:20

I have two sets (both cheap inexpensive Grin), one for bumming about the house and getting mucky, and one for out and about.

There's no doubt some more expensive clothes are maybe a better cut/design and last longer with wear and tear and not losing their colour, but when you're talking about a handbag or shoes costing the high hundreds, that's got nothing to do with the materials and everything to do with buying into the brand/snobbery.

WhataTreat · 12/05/2012 00:20

Ahh yes completely agree!

My boyfriend is a cheap-clothe-a-phobe and spends way more than I ever would on single items of clothing, yet seems to have way more holes in tshirts/rips in jeans etc than I ever get. He still won't step foot in Primark, but I luffs it!

Aribura · 12/05/2012 00:21

Plus it won't matter as much if I spill my fruit shoot down it.

OP posts:
ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 12/05/2012 00:22

Is very well-known that wearing non-designer clothes will give you jaundice, rickets and tinnitus. Fact.

bogeyface · 12/05/2012 00:22

I have to say that my M&S top that I bought 5 years ago is still looking fab, kept its colour etc but a George top bought at the same time will be at the charity shop by now. Cheaper clothes do tend to wear less well, but that said....if your clothes wear through at the pits, seams, crotch etc then you are wearing too small a size and the make of clothes isnt your problem!

I know this because I convinced myself I was a 14 when I was a 16 (and dieting) and wore through clothes quite quickly (and looked far bigger than I actually was) because of the friction points!

AgentZigzag · 12/05/2012 00:23

I mean I have two types of clothing sets, rather than just two outfits in the world to my name Grin

SkipTheLightFanjango · 12/05/2012 00:23

Can't answer this question...most of my clothes come from charity shops and I've had some of them for over 10 years!

PercyIsGreen · 12/05/2012 00:23

I have been waiting for mine to fall apart for yonks. Maybe it's because I don't mix designer with high street?

SkipTheLightFanjango · 12/05/2012 00:25

percy is that because the high street clothes won't realise they are inferior if not placed with designer clothes? Grin

Kayano · 12/05/2012 00:27

Unless it is monsoon

Because then you will pay the more expensive price but it will still 'fall apart' very quickly

I fucking hate monsoon for having pretty dresses of such shit quality

AgentZigzag · 12/05/2012 00:28

'I have to say that my M&S top that I bought 5 years ago is still looking fab, kept its colour etc but a George top bought at the same time will be at the charity shop by now.'

If I didn't know you were a lovely poster bogeyface, that could sound really bad Grin

Plus (to the OP), a person might be less likely to wear the expensive clothes and keep them in good nick than something from george, giving the illusion of being better clothes.

Only a wanker would clean out the oven in a pair of trousers costing the equivalent of a medium sized mortgage.

bogeyface · 12/05/2012 00:30

Oh, fuck.

That does look bad doesnt it! I REALLY didnt mean it to! In my defence, I only give nice stuff to charity shops as my son works at one so I know how much rubbish they throw away (seriously, some people put in worn and dirty knickers etc, you wouldnt believe what some people will do)

Off to give all my nice clothes to Scope now....... :( sniff

PercyIsGreen · 12/05/2012 00:31

Louise rednap said the other morning she mixes designer and high street - not in my high street missus unless it's bon marche and primarni

AgentZigzag · 12/05/2012 00:34

I just came back to say I didn't mean that to look stalkerish Grin

I meant you've always seemed lovely when I've noticed your posts, not that I particularly notice your posts like Grin

bogeyface · 12/05/2012 00:35

Would you like some wallpaper for that hole you have dug?! :o:o

AgentZigzag · 12/05/2012 00:37

Some 1970s big flowery shit would be nice... Grin

bogeyface · 12/05/2012 00:44

oooh.....what about this flowery shit?

tabulahrasa · 12/05/2012 00:45

I did have a t shirt from new look that literally fell apart in my hands...I hadn't done anything to it :(

It didn't make me want to buy designer stuff though.

DrCoconut · 12/05/2012 00:46

Zigzag, my mum just gave me some photos of me when I was little. The wallpaper and carpet combos make your eyes hurt! How did anyone ever find that aesthetically pleasing?!

bogeyface · 12/05/2012 00:48

dr (love the P&F reference!) I have some Xmas pics of me aged about 5 in my brand new nurses outfit against a back drop of cream paper with brown swirls on it, purple curtains and a multicoloured carpet.

Werent the 70's stylish? :o

AgentZigzag · 12/05/2012 00:53

A little too tasteful I think BF, I was thinking more along the lines of <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=1970s+flower+wallpaper+orange+brown&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1146&bih=711&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=wRca1Ezyc87l_M:&imgrefurl=pommedejour.bigcartel.com/product/vintage-70s-orange-flower-wallpaper-price-is-per-metre&docid=9CNdMbRTh4-bzM&imgurl=cache1.bigcartel.com/product_images/55252407/70s_0030.jpg&w=800&h=583&ei=qaWtT5y0BYnE0QWNuIySCQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=530&vpy=159&dur=1326&hovh=192&hovw=263&tx=121&ty=140&sig=112379514407926695039&page=1&tbnh=144&tbnw=198&start=0&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0,i:76" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">THIS! Shock

Yes, it's burned into my memory from my mum and dads house.

I had a troubled childhood Grin

bogeyface · 12/05/2012 00:59

Dammit!

I have the paper I posted in my lounge (although in red) so I wanted you to slag off how ugly it was, thereby digging your hole a wee bit deeper :o

I am LOVING the orange/yellow/puke paper, and £8 a metre is a total rip off bargain! Would make your hole v light and airy too!
