I found the tory-dating thread quite interesting. Clearly some people have very strong and deep-seated political views. I couldn't help but wonder: what would you do if your offsprings became conservatives? Would you be disappointed? Would you try to change their opinions at every opportunity? Would you buy them the complete Ken Loach collection? Would you dare admit it to your friends?
And what about their future partners, wouldn't you at least try to love them a little even if they were tories?
For me, I have right wing tendencies but it would probably be fun if DS ended up politically minded and on the left. At least it wouldn't be dull!

DD1, Y8, is making a concerted effort to turn all her girls' grammar pals into lefties. She can't see any sense in Tory thinking. I don't think she'll change on this and she is very political-minded.

SundaeGirl · 12/05/2012 12:07

I'm always amazed by how vitriolic those on the left are about those with moderate views on the right. It just doesn't happen the other way around. Moderate views, nice people, caring about others, looking out for others and living good lives with compassion.

As Ragwort pointed out, Tories aren't the monsters many of you seem to imagine. They're just a collection of people with a wide range of views. To not get this is quite, um, unlearned and prejudiced.

ReactionaryFish · 12/05/2012 14:13

I was very political too as a teenager - and very left wing until well into my 20s.
Then I got around a bit, saw some of the world and lo, my views changed.
Most people I know who are still on the left are only managing it by doing a pretty good ostrich impression - and quite frequently, acting directly contrary to their stated principles.

cinnamonnut · 12/05/2012 15:27

Oh dear, how embarrassing that the left-wingers on this thread are those with the most intolerant-sounding views.

bejeezus · 12/05/2012 15:36

I started the dating thread Grin

just found this one...

my dcs could be murderers and Id still love them

Codandchops · 12/05/2012 15:39

Rubbish - there are plenty of intolerant views from the right too. Just witness what this current Govt has done to the disabled in terms if cuts. All the while feeding a never ending stream of propaganda to the Tory press about scroungers in Incapacity Benefits.
Then read some of the reader comments which are quite horrific and from the dark ages.

donnie · 12/05/2012 15:44

I am exceptionally Toryphobic but my eldest dd is showing distinct signs of creeping Toryism ....I see a rampant little right winger in the making. Whilst I must say this has upset me a lot I still love her and would always support her right to hold different views from mine. Although I did get very riled when last year she told me I should 'forgive and forget' regarding Murdoch and News Intl (although I should make clear that her sole motivation for this was because she wants the sky and Disney channels on tv). She is 10.

maraisfrance · 12/05/2012 15:45

Hey SwedishEdith, what divine compassion and empathy you show by - rather smugly - sharing with us how 'disappointed' your mother was in her son. He must really love going to the compassionate family get togethers you host. Charming.

donnie · 12/05/2012 15:50

I don't only dislike Tories....I hate dogs too, and litterbugs. And people who chew gum whilst talking..............the list is endless.........Grin

Lilka · 12/05/2012 16:03

Just how much stereotyping and prejudice can you fit into one thread?

I love my DC. My only adult DC is pretty apathetic towards politics, my teenage one definitely could not care less. Youngest DC, who knows. I do hope he will grow up to take some interest in who is running the country. He is very kind and empathetic, and that's all that matters to me, no matter who he votes for. I trust he will have the same (or nearly the same) core personality, whether he always votes Tory, or joins the SWP.

I've been through so much shit to get my DC, and to raise them, that acting differently towards them purely based on their voting, is incomprehensible to me

Now, I am very definitely not right wing, but I rarely talk politics with DC, so they are probably unaware just how much a lefty I am! I prefer it that way. I get enough shouting and fights from the DC without adding politics into the mix Grin Now, I am very hard-line on some social issues. I am very very anti-death penalty no matter what, along with certain other issues. I still can not imagine wanting to have a row about it, as much as I would be privately disappointed were a DC to support it

Krumbum · 13/05/2012 02:01

Yes I'd be very sad if my children were homophobic, sexist, elitist and classist so right wing. I'd hope that bringing them up in a household that values the rights of all people and is forward thinking would mean this would not happen.

Abra1d · 13/05/2012 10:22

I post on a variety of topics on MN: children with asthma, getting novels published, charity and volunteer projects (have done quite a lot in my community), children with trouble making friends/being very shy and how to help them, eating disorders.

But because I'm a tory voter I'm 'homophobic, sexist, elitist and classist'?

edam · 13/05/2012 10:25

Hospital waiting times are up. Patients are being kept on trolleys for want of beds. Ambulances are stacked up outside hospitals waiting for want of beds. That's what the Tories do to the NHS - every flipping time. And that's just one of the reasons I hate the Tories.

Individual Tory voters - there are some I like. I treat their Toriness as an inexplicable failing in someone who is otherwise quite nice.

Codandchops · 13/05/2012 10:29

One of my very best friends votes Tory. He is lively, kind, not in the least homophobic or elitist. It's a bit like being Catholic Grin and not agreeing with the Pope or all the policies.
Oh and we have some right spirited ;and wine soaked) debates.Grin

bejeezus · 13/05/2012 10:32

there have been a few posters on here citing the work they do 'for chari'y mate' as evidence that they are Tory but compassionate....

do you know how much funding for charity has been cut by this 'Government'?

I know alot of people that work in that sector; and can think off the top of my head of 9 people who have been made redundant, who work for charities supporting families of disabled children and cahrities who offer support and services to Asylum Seekers

Superstickybeak · 13/05/2012 10:43

I'd be utterly delighted if my gang were Tory voters! Grin

If they voted for that hypocritical sap Miliband and his crew of privaledged wealthy twits pretending be down wiv da poor who clean their houses and wipe up their kids shit I'd be mortified!

Superstickybeak · 13/05/2012 10:45

Bejeezus, were Labour not going to have to make any cuts, then? Confused Would Labour hav emagically lifted us out of recession and debt by finding the magic money tree? Grin

echt · 13/05/2012 10:50

Superstickybeak, this is less about NuLabour being fantabulous (I know of no no left-wingers of my acquaintance being fooled for one fat minute) than of Tories of any stripe being the frozen limit.

bejeezus · 13/05/2012 10:55

maybe different cuts super?...maybe less tolerance for tax avoidance? who knows?

bejeezus · 13/05/2012 10:56

no...the tories have all the money trees , dont they? Grin

Superstickybeak · 13/05/2012 11:03

Less tolerance for tax avoidance? Hhm, so what stopped labour sorting out tax avoidance during their 13 years in power? Confused And hasn't Gideon just announced that it will be tackled? [double confused]

Bejeezus, silly me, yup, all us tories are rolling in it. So unlike those impoverished working class salt of the earth Lefties like Tony and Ed [grin

Superstickybeak · 13/05/2012 11:05

And, for teh record, I don;t know anyone who openly votes Leftie. It would be laughed at and a source of champagne hypocritical shame. Bit like Spititng Images Neil and his , " Lovely , lovely poor people !" skit.
Nowt worse than smug priveledged twats like Ed pretending to give a shit whilst paying his cleaner £8 an hour to wipe up his piss spills.

Jinsei · 13/05/2012 11:32

I would never date or marry a Tory. Our values would be incompatible, and it couldn't possibly work. That's not to say that Tories are monsters, merely that I would not choose to bring someone with those values into my life. None of my close friends are Tories either.

If dd were to vote Tory in the future, I would wonder where I had gone wrong. I would feel deep regret at the fact that I had failed to inculcate in her the values that I hold dear. But she would still be my daughter and I would not - could not - love her any less.

If dd were to marry a Tory, I would question her judgement but I would accept her choice.

Superstickybeak · 13/05/2012 11:53

I know dreadful to instil the values of hard work, self reliance, family, responsibility and graft when you can instil the values of living off others hard earned wealth ,blinkered loathing, a sense of entitlement and sheet hypocrsy( Diane Abbott, anyone? )

echt · 13/05/2012 11:59

So, superstickybeak why are these values of your first sentence not those of the left-wing?

Except graft, which means cheating in any ordinary parlance.

Diane Abbott is a twunt of the first order and the Tories are welcome to her sorry arse.
