to hate self checkouts in shops?

downtomylastcigarette · 11/05/2012 12:23

Apart from the fact that I hate using them, isn't this a ploy by the shop to cut staff? Why should I support that during a recession? Or is it a desparate attempt to stay in business during a recession, which I should support? Confusing ...

Any shop assistants with an opinion?

Of course it is but you you can put extra items in your bag and not pay for them...allegedly Wink

FridayOLeary · 11/05/2012 12:28

They always make me feel guilty.
Although, using the zapper to fast track does not.
Go figure.

Petsinmypudenda · 11/05/2012 12:30

I love them. I use all my crappy change in them.

squeakytoy · 11/05/2012 12:30

YABU, at least the machine doesnt yap away to the machine next to it, or question your purchases... nor does it throw the eggs as fast as it can towards the end of the packaging area Grin

Janoschi · 11/05/2012 12:31

I hate them. It's to cut staff and I don't like having to watch the staff showing customers how to use the machines and do them out of a job.

I boycott them but I'm probably one of the few!

Petsinmypudenda · 11/05/2012 12:31

And I can get embarrassing creams from boots with out some smirking checkout girl commenting

DancingwithDragons · 11/05/2012 12:33

YABU, staff are soooo annoying to deal with. Machines are much nicer. Grin

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 11/05/2012 12:35

Maybe it's just an attempt to cut queuing times for customers. Radical as it may seem.

I like them, they are quicker.

iseenodust · 11/05/2012 12:38

YANBU hate them hate them hate them.
Laughs at the concept they are quicker.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 11/05/2012 12:40

They have been much quicker every time I've used them, except in B&Q. Maybe you are doing it wrong.

MrsPnut · 11/05/2012 12:42

I like them better in some shops than others, Morrisons and B&Q are awful and I refuse to use them.

Sainsbury's and Tesco aren't too bad and I will occasionally use them if I don't have much shopping.

MrsJonesisright · 11/05/2012 12:42

I'm with Janoschi on this. I've never used one and don't ever want to. I absolutely believe they have been introduced purely to cut staff. There are few local job opportunities as it is. Not all school leavers are destined for university.

ItsAPublicForumWhine · 11/05/2012 12:44

I like them - mainly for the lack of human interaction. I dislike the forced conversation of checkout staff. (I used to be one, I know how it goes).

I don't like grannies doing a full trolley load weekly shop in front of me at them though.

imnotmymum · 11/05/2012 12:45

It always takes me twice as long as they never work for me "the assistant is coming" I feel so useless

SerendipitousHarlot · 11/05/2012 12:46

Oh god, I HATE the bloody things Angry

Once, I'd had a random security check by my bank because I'd spent so much money in a short time (it was payday!), and my card was declined Blush

The machine shouted at the top of it's voice.... 'YOUR CARD HAS BEEN DECLINED' I was mortified Blush

iseenodust · 11/05/2012 12:48

V funny Outraged. They have a staff hoverer there because so many people come unstuck because they're crap. Don't get me started on using vouchers on them. They are solely to cut staff numbers.

sugarice · 11/05/2012 12:51

I'm okay with the one's in Sainsburys, I can go through them smoothly and quickly. Asda on the other hand are a complete bloody nightmare and always cock up.

TheCunningStunt · 11/05/2012 12:53

I like them. I often nip out for one thing here and there and I just go in and out using these. No ques, and I always get stuck behind a person doing a weeks shop and here's me with my tub of cream needing to get home and made into a cake filling. Tis important stuff you knowWink

FondleWithCare · 11/05/2012 12:57

I like them, quicker and easier for smaller shops. Since we got them in our shop the number of staff on checkouts has increased as well despite many customers telling me that the store will sack me because of them.

Byeckerslike · 11/05/2012 12:57

I actually dont mind them, i can get on and check out fine. Usually quite quickly but...

In sainsburys last week, i had 8 items max, one of which was two oranges (loose) the assistant was over attentive and kept coming over and fussing over us (i have 3 of the cutest little boys you have ever seen Wink )

I went to press the 'look up item' button, which i have used regularly and know how it works, she immediately jumped in and said 'oh here, do you know how to do that' in her haste she knocked my hand and i pressed the mushroom button, i said 'oh look you have made me press the button now!'
She presses a load of buttons and retreats. I look at the screen after i have sucessfully weighed and bagged the oranges and the mushrooms were still on my bill.

I said, excuse me, those mushrooms are still on my bill. She comes over like she has never seen me before in her life and proceeds to empty my shopping bog to check for fucking mushroom contraband! By this point ds1 was grouching because he wanted to carry the wrapping paper roll, but of course 'UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA'

God that is a long post, im still stressed about it now!! Grin

AkhalTeke · 11/05/2012 13:03

My Unexpected Item In The Bagging Area is usually a child.

and what's with all those reports that 1 in ten items are not scanned, but nicked? how do you do that?

*disclaimer. Am asking from motives of curiosity alone.

MaidenDevon · 11/05/2012 13:04

Love 'em if I'm just getting a couple of bits. I put a £10 note in one this morning for a £1.75 transaction, the change came rattling out and I shouted "I'VE WON!", before scurrying off clutching my change winnings and chocolate fruit ... Grin

AnnoyingOrange · 11/05/2012 13:05

I like them if I have only stopped in for a couple of items

Goolash · 11/05/2012 13:06

I like them, they're usually much quicker if you don't have much shopping. My local store now has 8 checkouts where there used to be room of the old ones. Great for everyone buying their lunches!

It is irritating when there's no one around to help with problems.

Agree with the exception of Morrisons and B&Q. Morrisons are badly designed. B&Q makes you carry large objects out of the trolley and squish them with everything else on a scale that's too small. The till has 5 tantrums along the way.

MissMogwi · 11/05/2012 13:06

YANBU I hate them with a passion. The DC now beg me not to use them as I get so Angry.Blush

But if I only have a couple of things I can't be doing with queuing up, and I forget I hate the machines. They are so loud. 'Unexpected item in bagging area' Unexpected item in bagging area' arrgh piss off.

Grin
