booyhoo I'm in NI too, it's an odd one here. I don't feel like I fit in either camp, but did buy some union jack knickers last week to wind DP up Grin

SmallShips · 11/05/2012 11:29

and when it's on your bread it's the Union flag not the Union Jack.

typicalvirgo · 11/05/2012 11:30
Grin

I need to get my name down on that petition

Darkling · 11/05/2012 11:33

They have rebranded them to Great British Fancies, I just noticed some in asda and was like Hmm. Nothing wrong with a bit of national pride but some things shouldn't be messed with and cake is one of them Grin.

cocolepew · 11/05/2012 11:33

Because the Union Jack can be used in a sectarian way over here i find it odd there is so much of it about. Saying that come July everything will sell like hotcakes Grin

IAmBooyhoo · 11/05/2012 11:33
Grin

see i would love to get into the whole jubilee and olympics ( we will be anyway through various things) but it would more than likely (literally without any exaggeration)get me shot in this town if i was to even think of purchasing a union flag/jack. it's so sad. my ds has no idea abot unionism or nationalism, he see the british flag on things in books and on tv and will say "yay britain!!" as that is what it means to him and what i have told him it stands for. he would love to have a flag to wave but we just could never do that. he wouldn't understand the backlash and tbh it would probably scare him.

IAmBooyhoo · 11/05/2012 11:35

"some things shouldn't be messed with and cake is one of them ."

totally agree!!

Grin agree coco!

Bunsouttheoven · 11/05/2012 11:35

Opened new nappy packet today, union jacks on bums.

It's not so much as not being proud of being British it's just all a bit cheesy & jumping on the band wagon to me. I don't really think these manufacturers are especially proud to be British (often they aren't anyway) it's just a marketing opportunity.

Bah humbug, yes to street parties & community fun no to union jack tat, destined for landfill.

savoycabbage · 11/05/2012 11:35

In Australia the flag is in loads of things all of the time. They love their flag and they love their country. We have a flag polecat school and the flag is put up every morning by two year sixes. We sing the national anthem in assembly and the 'star of the week' certificates are called Aussies.

Shops advertise that they are Australian owned and products that they are Australian made or grown.

It seems to really work for them.

JayelleBee · 11/05/2012 11:36

Our Gordon's Gin arrived in the Asda delivery complete with green Union Jack.

We've temporarily stopped buying UJ branded products. Hovis is another offender.

We're also Scottish. It is also very much a Glasgow Rangers "brand" too, which is harder to take than the British Union connection.

tazzle22 · 11/05/2012 11:37

I think what worra means is that there have been times when either / or the union flag or individual scottish / english /welsh / irish have been flown its been viewed as being racist against people whose ancestry is any different.

There was a few years ago now a hoo ha when people were not allowed to wear badges of the english flag at work to celebrate st georges day as some pc personages ahd decided it was racist........ that may be because certain factions of militant racists were at that time flouting the flags as their "identity" more specifically the UJ. I can understand some people becoming a little wary of some factions of society seen sporting the union flag.

As to whether not liking union jack wrapping on food is reasonable or not....... Hmmm actually I cant actually make up my mind ..... If it brings a smile or a feeling of celebration to some people who are proud of GB / the queen / like sports and want to support their team them I am ok with that and it might be unreasaonalbe to object , though not unreaonable to not like it Wink

CreamolaFoamless · 11/05/2012 11:38

union jack this uion jack that red white and blue ....boring

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 11/05/2012 11:40

That's exactly what I mean tazzle

The Union flag has often been seen as racist since the National Front days in the 70's.

It's nice to see it in a positive light now.

Even if it is on every bit of tat going....it's fun Grin

startail · 11/05/2012 11:40

UABU
A bit of national pride is probably no bad thing.

I was brought up in Wales and they aren't afraid to fly the flag and sell cuddly dragons.

I had a lovely Welsh flag as a child.

If I flew the English flag of my birth until very recently I'd have been seen as racist. Now I might get away with being thought of as a football fan - I suppose that's an improvement?

Let's fly the union jack and remind ourselves that whether we are English, Northern Irish, Scotch or Welsh or by parentage or upbringing a mixture, we are stronger united.

Although the Union Jack definitely needs a dragon adding!

tazzle22 · 11/05/2012 11:40

errmmm quickly adding to my post to clarify that the miltant factions I meant were the BNP / skinheads / racists

tazzle22 · 11/05/2012 11:44

thanks worral... those of us that can remember the NF days and the fear that was generated can really understand why the flag had such unpleasnt links for so many people.

and startail if we gonna add more emblems to the flag dont forget the thistle Grin

WorraLiberty · 11/05/2012 11:45

I think we should add a dragon, a thistle and a Gregg's pasty Grin

redrubyshoes · 11/05/2012 11:46

My father was Scottish, my mother is Welsh, my granny was Irish and I was born in England.

I change my allegiance at the drop of a hat depending who is winning the rugby. Smile

I like seeing the flag celebrated.

Petsinmypudenda · 11/05/2012 11:53

Hunion jack this uion jack that red white and blue ....boring

The Scottish flag isn't the most exciting flag though to be fair.

i like Benin's flag

TheRealMrsHannigan · 11/05/2012 11:54

I love the British flag, and am proud to be part of this country, it is far from perfect, but it is my heritage. I wish there were less disdain and more patriotism in this country.

Having the union flag emblazoned on food packets etc isn't going to change the taste is it? Where's the harm?

Whilst I am not a huge fan of all the money being wasted in this time of austerity on the Jubilee and Olympics, it is history in the making, I have been explaining it to my DD, I want her to know her heritage and also be proud of her country.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 11/05/2012 12:01

I love all the red white and blue everywhere at the moment, and I can't wait to decorate our house for jubilee weekend and the Olympics. It's fun.

It's pathetic that some Scottish people are so anti the Union Flag. It says far more about them and their pettiness than it does about anything else.

ShatnersBassoon · 11/05/2012 12:14

I quite like it. I like a bit of variety, and 'limited edition' bread wrappers are all it takes to make me excited these days.

I could understand if people in Scotland were annoyed because they were having to buy Euro 2012 branded goods, that would be insensitive.

Enjoy the nice cheerful Union flag colours, or commit to stay away from street parties, work on the bonus Bank Holiday and promise not to watch a single moment of the UK Olympic team's efforts. I defy anyone to not enjoy a moment of patriotism this year Grin.

Katiepoes · 11/05/2012 12:18

I like some of it - the BBC food magazine has a recipe this month for a Union flag cake, it looks amazing. Some if the retro stuff that's out looks good too - the teas and such. I'm Irish living in Holland, I like seeing it used this way.

The Dutch make everything you can imagine orange for celerations, why shouldn't you British celebrate your flag and claim it back from the EDL and Engerlund yellers?

Superbly intellectual reasoning there OP. Did it take you long to figure it out?

LaurieFairyCake · 11/05/2012 12:22

I love it - really cheerful and makes me happy to be British

I'm Scottish
