I'm sad for the employees of course but these stores were peddlers of expensive tat.

OP posts:
ShutUpMeg · 09/05/2012 16:26

It was a crap shop. The likes of Moonpig and Funky Pigeon will take over all things birthday/card related. Easier and generally cheaper.

WorraLiberty · 09/05/2012 16:27

I used to work for them when there were only a couple in the whole country

The tightest company I've ever worked for!

Sad for the staff though

usualsuspect · 09/05/2012 16:28

I'm sad when I see any high street shop go tbh . It signals the end of the high street to me.

BunnyLebowski · 09/05/2012 16:29

T'was a tacky shithole.

Everything was covered in those horrible wee grey bears with their soppy messages. Bleurgh.

usualsuspect · 09/05/2012 16:31

I get a feeling of doom when another big named shop goes.

More unemployment

twolittlemonkeys · 09/05/2012 16:32

I'm sad for the employees, but the cards were just overpriced, nothing special. And then there was all the tat for any occasion. I won't miss it.

Gumby · 09/05/2012 16:34

Oh I quite liked it
Very sad for the staff
Mostly female works too

LaurieFairyCake · 09/05/2012 16:37

I also thought they were really ugly, dated shops - I hated that beige/orange vibe.

I've never bought a card online though - M&S/John Lewis always have nice cards so I go there.

notaniphoneownerjustabadtypist · 09/05/2012 16:53

Yes, sorry for the workers, won;t miss the tacky shops.

RobinSparkles · 09/05/2012 16:55

I prefer card factory - 7 cards for a pound, you can't go wrong! Wink

pigletmania · 09/05/2012 16:55

It was a matter of time tbh, overpriced cards and tat. In Asda you can get beautiful Hallmark cards for half the pricce, and Card Factory for some cheapy cards

5Foot5 · 09/05/2012 16:56

I didn't realise they had closed.

I agree that it is always sad for the employees and it is a shame that there will be yet another empty shop on our High Street. However, I can't say I am surprised. The cost of a card from Clintons was laughable compared to something not too different from Card Factory.

gigglygirly · 09/05/2012 16:56

Oh no!! Where will I get blue nosed bears and friends from!?!?

StetsonsAreCool · 09/05/2012 17:00

I used to work there about 10 years ago. I'll be sad for the staff, but after spending nearly £50 there (!) on Christmas cards for immediate family last year, I'm hardly suprised - I haven't shopped there since, and the gradual creeping in of random crap makes my eyes itch.

I also used to work for one of their suppliers, an arm of American Greetings, who used to have a really good relationship with Clintons, so I'm also a bit sad that it's come to this.

FaceForRadio · 09/05/2012 17:02

bad news.

just another chain in the long list to have gone down that horrible route.

tough times for the employees and families of.

agree about the 'feeling of doom'

Bathsheba · 09/05/2012 17:05

Sad fpor the employees - not in anyway surprised though. Their things are FAR more expensive than supermarket cards and I get all mine there.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 09/05/2012 17:06

My sister works in one of the shops. I imagine she's very happy, this year will be the first Christmas she's had off since she was pregnant 6 years ago. She's supposed to work 1 day a week, she rarely does. Hmm

valiumredhead · 09/05/2012 17:22

Sorry for the workers obviously but honestly it was such a shit dated shop I'm not surprised really.

Our one is always empty in town yet there is usually a queue in the Card Factory shop just down the road. Decent prices and lots of choice. People can't afford to pay such ridiculous prices for cards.

Pandemoniaa · 09/05/2012 17:28

I'm sorry for the workers and certainly, in our town, the loss of any halfway useful shop always guarantees another non-business selling organic string and random but fearsomely expensive Pretty Things.

However, I'm not really surprised. It was almost impossible to find a decent card in Clintons since everything is now buried under vile fucking bears and strange shiny random shit.

goingtoofast · 09/05/2012 17:31

They are so over priced it's no suprise. I also buy cards cheap from the card factory and nice ones from M&S which are still cheaper then an equivilant in Clintons.

fedupofnamechanging · 09/05/2012 17:32

No ordinary card should be more than a quid, really. They were destined for trouble when they started charging £3 or £4 for a nice, but not exceptional cards.

Where I live, we have a little arcade of shops. If Clinton's goes, there will be 3 shops in a row, sitting empty (Millets and Game, being the other two).
The high street is getting ruined - I try to shop there, but end up coming home and getting what I want off Amazon, because I just can't get it in town any more (was trying yesterday to get a maxi poster frame - an impossibility in my town).

Feel so sad for the employees - totally shit for them.

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 09/05/2012 17:33

8000 people will lose their jobs Sad

It's a bid sad, it's another British business coming to an end, but I do wonder why they didn't at least try and be competitive. As others have said, you could get cards and things at Card Factory etc that were just as good but for a fraction of the price.

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 09/05/2012 17:34

*bit

ENormaSnob · 09/05/2012 17:34

Not surprised at all tbh.

Stupidly overpriced and filled with crap.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 09/05/2012 17:39

Card factory have taken over round here. Much better selection,
Much better prices!
