I'm sad for the employees of course but these stores were peddlers of expensive tat.

Tescos or Wilkos do just as nice cards as does Card Factory zukie seriously, Clintons is really nothing special imo.

sausagesandmarmelade · 10/05/2012 09:41

I won't miss em. Definitely over-priced.

I usually buy cards from M&S or Tesco....good quality at very reasonable prices.

I resent paying more than a couple of quid for a card...would rather put it towards the pressie

redexpat · 10/05/2012 10:27

I used to get lots of wrapping paper and glittery things there. Although last time I was in the UK they had no suitable cards so ended up in Boots of all places! M&S have got nice ones.

I've just read that article from the Guardian - didn't know that Peacocks had gone! I've got lots of little odds and sods from there in the past.

I'm in Denmark and their "budget" airline Cimber has just gone bust and I can't believe they've lasted this long. Always have to wait for an hour at check in at Gatwick and the fares were always 3 times that of ryanair.

startail · 10/05/2012 10:42

Our nice independent gift shop sells fancy cards for £2, rather than £3.99. The sweet shop very acceptable Easter cards at 50p.
Our little Tescos has some.

Cards are one thing, I therefore, don't look at when I go to town.

Sad for the employers and Sad that our nearest Clintons is next to a boarded up Woolworths. Makes the shooing centre very depressing.

YANBU terrible range. I get mine from John Lewis for classy ones or an indie shop for fun ones.
But I do think that we send waaaay too many cards in this country: sorry you're leaving/ good luck in your new job/ well done on being pregnant/ passing your driving test/ being engaged etc....
Overkill IMO.

"I found exactly the card I wanted in Clintons for £4. I don't consider that expensive for a decent card, which will be kept forever"

Forever! Are you serious? Do people really keep cards - even v special occasion ones like a wedding - for ever? I can see that you might hang on to them for a bit out of sentimental reasons; then they will be put in a drawer for safekeeping; then one day a few years hence the drawer will need tidying out and chances are the cards will go.

Admittedly I am still hanging on to our silver wedding cards but that was only 3 months ago. I can guarantee that none of the original wedding cards are likely to pop up anywhere!

I'll always spend a little more on wedding/baby cards as they're more likely to be kept. Tescos etc will have a very similar range to clintons as they use the same suppliers.

I'm not sure who is near you zukie, but the charity shops now have some really nice cards, as do the garden centres

funkybuddah · 10/05/2012 18:16

I chuck all cards, don't have any from the birth of my kids, I don't need to see them and have never wished my mum had ones from my birth.

But then all I have as keepsakes are a babygrow each and socks.

I won't miss Clintons for their products, nasty and overpriced for recycling fodder.
I do however (as a high street worker, not a prostitute lol) mourn the loss of shops, ghost town by the specials should be played in most shopping centres now.

Don't worry Zukie, you'll find a replacement! Marksies do nice classy* cards that are lovely and cheap. And they have a special greetings-card loyalty card, sixth one's free! Surely there's one on your high street?

*N.B. My own mother used this word to describe a set of bath mats once, so you may wish to take heed from other posters before relying on my taste

M and S do lovely cards, really I bet you will notice the difference if you compare them to what you were buying in over priced Clintons zukie Wink

lemonlymon · 10/05/2012 22:09

M&S do lovely cards, and they start at £1.

They also have a loyalty card scheme for gift cards, if you buy 5 you get the 6th for free. Give 'em a try...

EssentialFattyAcid · 10/05/2012 22:15

Im glad clintons failed as I thought it was a crappola shop. Expensive crap at that...

Anste · 10/05/2012 23:32

Feel sorry for the employees too, but not surprised, so overpriced and they've never got 'just what you want.'

M & S really good, and they seem to be getting more choice these days, plus ive got loyalty card - buy 6 get 1 free, bargain.

Anste · 10/05/2012 23:35

Oops, Lemonlymon didn't read your comment too well before i posted, think your right buy 5 get 6th free.

EchoBitch · 10/05/2012 23:41

I think it's sad...

Another boarded up shop front on the high street and employees out of work.

Just because you don't want to buy the stuff (and i only buy the cards) doesn't mean it's a good thing to see yet another business hit the skids.

pinkteddy · 10/05/2012 23:55

Agree echo. I will miss it. My nieces all love tatty teddy! And if you wanted an unusual card, you could always get it there.

takingiteasy · 11/05/2012 00:19

I popped in to Clinton's for the first time in ages yesterday and went straight to the value range. I'm tight and rarely spend over £1on a card!

Starwisher · 11/05/2012 02:48

Although I never bought much from there it is sad.

Its not just the staff in the shops this effects, its also the suppliers of the cards themselves who will employ artists, writers, printers, admin staff and so on.
