To think that hanging family photos/portraits on the wall is incredibly naff.

Photos should be in frames and placed on a table or mantelpiece. I especially hate when said photos are blown up to A3 size or bigger, ick! The only time I allow the 'no photos on wall rule' to be relaxed is on the wall leading up a stairs, for some reason this is less offensive.

Art on your wall people not studio portraits of your cherubs!

(Sits down and awaits the hate)

I'm firm in my belief that it is naff just as other people are firm in their belief that it isn't naff.

who cares?! so long as the photos are decent (as in, fully clothed and in focus), I couldn't give a shiny shit.

That said, it has taken me a year to get DH to hang 3 pieces of 'art' in our house, so getting photos up would take a long long time. (and he doesn't trust me with a hammer, so he has to do it, before anyone asks)

Do you sneer at prints rather than original art work too? (because my family do, and sneer at our 'art' on the walls, and I could not give even the tiniest of fucks, because it's my house, and I live with the decor.)

mirry2 · 08/05/2012 11:25

Mine are in the downstairs loo

PoohBearsHole · 08/05/2012 11:26

Oh Dear. I have 2 conned venture photo's above my bed of dd and ds Sad I must be naff.

However I am confident that I am the least naff person I know at least. I do know some pretty naff people though Grin

takeonboard · 08/05/2012 11:27

I don't like photos on walls for myself but it doesn't bother me in other peoples homes

squoosh · 08/05/2012 11:27

Kveta nothing wrong with prints, I cedrtainly can't afford all original works of art, but I have sneered inwardly at certain prints in my time.

Buying art from Ikea is incredibly naff in Squooshitania.

Oh, the naffness of me!

WOE.

I bet you also wouldn't like my genuine Pleather 1970's suite. Or the sideboard. Sad

my prints are all limited prints, 1 of no more than about 25 each - is that still naff?

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 08/05/2012 11:28

Yabu .

Black and White or sepia family photographs grouped together on walls can look very effective.

I would rather have tasteful images of family on the wall than naff ikea prints .

SodoffBaldrick · 08/05/2012 11:29

Oh, I sneer at prints... :(

DH has a mahoosive Modigliani nude that he keeps threatening to frame and hang and I keep hiding it.

Salmotrutta · 08/05/2012 11:29

Oh see, none of ours are staged apart from the very old ones of antecdedents. And they are staged in an old-fashioned Mum, Dad, kids standing Victorian way.
And an army one. That was staged.

PineappleBed · 08/05/2012 11:30

I think the word naff is pretty naff and 80s like the work hunk blurgh

hiddenhome · 08/05/2012 11:30

The really naff ones are the ones that pretend to be actual paintings. They're horrible, as are large photos. Keep 'em small and neat and in a little group somewhere.

PoohBearsHole · 08/05/2012 11:31

I do however draw the line at soft focus glamour shots

DartsAgain · 08/05/2012 11:31

I've actually only got 2 pictures on the walls, both prints of paintings. One's a still life of a country style flower arrangement, and the other a painting of Looe harbour. All the photos are actually crammed onto the mantlepiece or tops of cupboards/tables.

ILikeTrains · 08/05/2012 11:31

How people present their houses somewhat reflects their personalities, you having strict rules about what can be hung and where would certainly give me an opinion about you, and it isn't likely to be what impeccable taste you have!

squoosh · 08/05/2012 11:31

OhBaldrick, stand firm in your ban!. Limited edition prints are great but not a random copy of a well kknow art work.

bewitchedandbewildered · 08/05/2012 11:32

I would rather have photos of my nearest and dearest, or arty creations by my children on my walls than trashy mass produced and marketed prints that represent nothing more than "tying the colours of the room together".

If I could afford it I would have nothing but original artwork, but turns out I have a keen eye with expensive taste. So family photos on my walls it is!

They're my walls. It's my home. I don't give a flying iota if you like it or not. Go home if you don't. Problem solved.

PoohBearsHole · 08/05/2012 11:32

We certainly don't have much "original" art apart from dd's all of ours are prints in frames. (albeit very "naice" ones)

ExitPursuedByABear · 08/05/2012 11:32

Thank you thank you thank you

I sometimes beat myself up because I never had my DD photographed in a studio in some bizarre oufit, had a print blown up to giant tv screen size and then hung on my wall. But I know in my heart of hearts that I have done the right thing!

I was looking through the pics of a friends house which is up for sale - they don't have children so she has enormous blow up prints of her dogs on the walls. I knew it looked wrong and you OP have confirmed my opinions.

CrunchyFrog · 08/05/2012 11:34

Are film posters and book covers OK?

What about old bits of sheet music? Got them going up my stairs.

Oh, and postcards blutacked randomly about the place.

I do actually have lots of original artwork, because I have several artists for friends who tend to give paintings as gifts. They are Cool.

squoosh · 08/05/2012 11:35

You see, I disagree ILikeTrains. People decorating their homes in identical ways, i.e. brown leather couch, magnolia walls, feature wallpaper wall, ikea art, says bugger all about their personalities.

Glitterknickaz · 08/05/2012 11:36

Are heyoooge bespoke photorealist pencil portraits equally naff? Cos then I'm naff...

squoosh · 08/05/2012 11:36

CrunchyFrog it all sounds bloody marvellous.
