To think that hanging family photos/portraits on the wall is incredibly naff.

Photos should be in frames and placed on a table or mantelpiece. I especially hate when said photos are blown up to A3 size or bigger, ick! The only time I allow the 'no photos on wall rule' to be relaxed is on the wall leading up a stairs, for some reason this is less offensive.

Art on your wall people not studio portraits of your cherubs!

(Sits down and awaits the hate)

No, no, no. Step away from the Cambridge matriculation photo. I'm not sure what matriculation is, but I am sure it must not be on the wall.

wickedestsminthewest · 09/05/2012 18:23

And eww I hate school photos through the ages too.. it's horribly caaaaaaouncil

What about photos made in to clocks, mmm, they're classy Grin

helen fear not - cambridge matriculation is not on the wall Grin . Does a frame on the fire place mantel piece make it acceptable though Hmm Wink

reastie · 09/05/2012 18:26

or photos made in to blinds or cushions wick Wink

I can't remember ever having much of an opinion about what other people have on their walls. Except once. Just the once. Family house, two parents, two (small cute) children - all over the house there were large photos of him (father) in a variety of poses (suited and booted, in leather with motorbike) all professionally taken (at a guess) all with him moodily staring into the lens. How I imagine gay soft porn to be. IN several rooms and large photos. Nary a one of wifey and kids.

Not naff but odd. Very very odd.

wickedestsminthewest · 09/05/2012 18:32

Eww, yes. gross.

My DSD's mother has a photo of DSD made in to a fairy on her wall... I will try and find an example...

Don't know if this will work www.snappysnaps.co.uk/assets/images/content/wallart-frames/fantasy_visual_pic.jpg

I have the boys school pictures in frames on the sideboard. Other than that I have 1 picture up, in the front room. Its just bigger than A3 and its of my kids but not posed or with them looking at the camera. Everyone comments on how lovely and timeless it is.

I remember a friend when I was younger had every photo ever taken of them on their front room wall. I did the photo sessions when mine were little but just got one main one for my front room and the others went into albums. I still have very few photos up in my house tbh.

PipFEH · 09/05/2012 18:44

I have lots of photos up in my house - LOTS! They are all snapshots though, taken by me, rather than professional pics - I tinker with ten myself too. I have one of ds1 on the beach blown up to huge proportions - it is the luckiest shot I have ever got, everything about it is perfect, I am incredibly proud of it as a piece of 'photography', everyone comments on how good it is - I really love it. I think you should have what you love on your walls and not try to adhere to some silly rule. Just realised that I have 3 professional photos from our wedding on canvas behind my head as I've been typing this Grin.

reastie · 09/05/2012 18:52

wick Hmm

Nanny0gg · 09/05/2012 18:57

Starwisher That is exactly the frame I have my family photo in on my landing.
It looks beautiful!

DizzyKipper · 09/05/2012 19:22

This is a bit of a non-issue surely? Confused /not overly concerned and judgemental about what other people do/don't put on their walls.

MedusaIsHavingABadHairDay · 09/05/2012 19:42

My home is full of photos.. good ones, bad ones, a couple of gasp Venture ones, and some which date back to the earliest photography where my stern great great grandparents glared at the camera... I love them ALL. I have a massive sepia original of my grandmother and her 4 brothers taken in 1928 which looks at me every time I climb the stairs..love it!

They are reminders of great times.. everything from daft parenting moments, to beloved deceased pets.. and I love them. I would far rather see people's lives on their walls, photos (especially the non posed variety) tell a story! If that's naff... I celebrate naffness!

However if I see a home with no books.... then I pull my judgypants up to my chin.. Grin * my home has too many and might be a tad cluttered....

Massive naffness here and I don't care!

We have:

Venture photo collection of DS1 in big frame - yes, we got sucked right in!

Several random scatterings of black and white photos in black frames from Ikea [swoons] - DS1 and 2, sporting photo for each of DP and I, DP and DS1 looking at some nice views, a couple of old photos of family, DS1 and I bouncing on a trampoline etc

Large canvas print of me winning a big sporting event - a photogenic sporting event I hasten to add!

Photoshopped photo of DS1 standing in the middle of falling snow - photoshopped to look like a painting, with a poem I love printed on it.

Collection of random postcards, prints and poems that I love all around my desk - all in cheap frames.

Two five aperture frames with sporting photos

Random collection of old sepia family photos, old documents and maps in black and white frames.

Rubbish sketch map of the walks we do round our village that I drew for DS1 in an Ikea frame.

Two large Ordnance Survey maps centred on our house and village in nice frames.

We also have Billy bookcases - but in my defence, bookcasing for over 2000 books was going to be a bit pricey otherwise.

Do I win the MN Naffness award?
